Part 7:  Princess Jasmine as Lady Ashara Dayne

Ashara Dayne at the opening feast for the grand tournament at Harrenhal, waiting in the candlelight before the dancing begins.  Ashara’s dress is similar in style to the gown I designed for Cersei, to suggest that this is the particular style favoured among ladies at the Royal Court, but the transparent gauze sleeves and over-skirt are modelled after Elia’s style.  This is to show that Ashara, like Elia, combines the court styles with elements from her Dornish culture, and as a visual clue to onlookers that Ashara is part of Princess Elia’s retinue. 

Jasmine was the first character I thought of for Ashara, partially because Jasmine’s unashamed sexuality and desire to control her own destiny struck me as particularly Dornish, but largely because when comments are made about Ashara’s beauty, her most striking features seem to be her hair and her eyes, and when Aladdin talks about Jasmine to the Genie, those are the features he mentions.  (I also tend to picture the Daynes as looking Dornish with Valyrian colouring rather than looking just like Targaryens, so I wanted a POC animated character for all the Dornish characters, not just the Martells).  

 I think (unless anyone has any suggestions) that this will be the last of the Pre-Series females, so it’s time to make a start on the men!

I’ve been reading so many articles over the last week or so about this and each one leaves me heartbroken. The people we’re so fearful of reaching our shores are HUMANS - fleeing a war ridden country in which they’re simply not safe. The lengths they’re going to in hope of freedom tells us all we need to know of the horrors they’ve left behind. They would not take such huge risks if they weren’t desperate to escape torture and destruction. Mothers and fathers would not put their children’s lives at risk if they thought there was any other way. These are innocent people: mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters - CHILDREN. Don’t let your opinions be led by fear based on untruths in the media. Open your heart and show some compassion for those suffering. Put yourself in their shoes and be human too.

Thank you, Gi, for saying this so passionately. The media seems to try so hard to dehumanise these people so it makes it easier to ignore their suffering. We shouldn't let them.

I have serious issues with this quote. Does anyone know where it came from? Do people actually read Wuthering Heights to understand the context of this? This quote came from Catherine Earnshaw, a psychotic witch who was obsessed with taunting and leading on Heathcliff. She was absolutely crazy and in this scene in the chapter, Cathy is in tears telling her Nanny how she just said yes to Edgar Linton’s proposal when she still “loves” Heathcliff. She doesn’t love Heathcliff. She loves the attention she gets from him and from her drama when he’s around her. She is the heart and soul of Heathcliff’s anger and torment.

I think it’s terrible that people romanticize this quote because it’s not a representation of love and dedication. It’s a representation of what having no control over one’s emotions and manipulation does to a person.

While its true Cathy is absolutely nuts and DOES often manipulate Heathcliff, Cathy is 17 (I think I can’t remember the exact ages and stuff it’s 2am) when she makes this decision. Her entire life, especially since her father died, has been her pushed to marry for social standing and money etc. Cathy herself says “if that man in there had not brought Heathcliff so low” SHE WANTS to marry H very much, she loves him. She understands that her love for Linton is a fleeting love, “time will change it” but that her love for Heathcliff is “eternal”. She cannot, as both a victim of her own selfish reasons (“I should like to be the greatest woman in the neighbourhood”) and a victim of society’s pressures, marry Heathcliff. She would become a beggar if she were to do so and unfortunately she cannot bring herself to make that sacrifice. She admits to Nelly, a servant of the household who is only a few years older than her and therefore not a nanny, that she wished to aide Heathcliff in his rise through the class system once she had married, possibly to then fathom a way to be with Heathcliff. She WAITS two years to marry Linton after Heathcliff runs away, in the desperate hope he will return. She loves Heathcliff with every fibre of her being, but knows she cannot marry him without disgracing herself. Whilst this quote is about possibly the most destructive relationship in literature, they do love each other - that is their problem and the reason for their torment - so to romanticise it is not a great leap. I don’t agree with the application of this quote to relationships like “me and my Boyf whatever souls are made of…” But it is a very real raw love between the two characters.

Also, saying that Cathy is the 'heart and soul of Heathcliff's anger and torment' without acknowledging that Heathcliff is the same for her seems wrong to me. Cathy is selfish, and hell, maybe even psychotic but it's not as though Heathcliff is an innocent victim of her torture. The two of them are essentially terrible people! I definitely have a problem with this quote being used in a straight up romantic sense because to 'romanticise', as it were, Cathy and Heathcliff's entire relationship, is problematic to me. It's not that they don't love each other, it's just that it's a terrible, destructive passion that destroys not only them but several other people in the process. The thing is that Cathy and Heathcliff deserve each other and so this quote of Cathy's (while not indicative of a romance anyone should aspire to) is quite true. They are soul mates... It's just not necessarily a good thing. But Cathy is not the only terrible one in this terrible, tormented relationship.

Oh god i just... there are so many gifs of vision on my dash and all i can think about is how tony lost his best friend and i am a WRECK like how the fuck could they not include anything about how tony felt about jarvis and the vision and i am literally just word vomitting right now idek what i'm saying I'M JUST V UPSET OKAY?

and because i am shipper trash i’m just gonna go ahead and say that i wanna write a fic that takes place like right before tony drives off into the sunset where steve seeks tony out one night who is sitting on the roof of the new avengers facility and just quietly mourning the loss of his friend, because tony created jarvis after the real jarvis died and that helped him cope, right? but now that jarvis is gone, what’s supposed to help him now? 

and steve obviously knows a lot about loss too, and i just want them talking… like, REALLY talking things out and wearing their hearts on their sleeves because they weren’t very good at communicating to begin with, and now this is a good way to start over and to really try to understand one another, and they spend the entire night just sitting outside under the stars talking about anything and everything

and then the next morning when tony goes back into the city, he obvs pulls steve in for a kiss and makes steve promise to keep in touch and visit as soon as steve can get a few days off, and steve does, and now the two of them have something to look forward to in the future :D

What Is Family:  Family is that strange collection of people that you are obligated to hang out with because you share some of the same dna.  Sometimes they are very cool and you are glad to know them and sometimes you know that you would never speak to them again if you didn't have to. This usually leads to a lot of conflicted feelings. But I'm a strong believer in the idea that you can create or 'find' your own family, which is usually more supportive and loving than that arbitrary collection of people that you are born to. :)  

Favorite Beverage: Diluted cranberry juice. Haven't liked non-diluted stuff since I drank loads of it when I was very ill once :(

Last Movie I Watched In Theaters: Ant Man which I didn't have high expectations for but really enjoyed

Dream Wedding: I never really started thinking about it until this past year when I saw how stressed my cousins were getting over their respective wedding plans.  Realising that if they were struggling with managing feuding relatives and agonising over who couldn't sit with who at the wedding breakfast then I would have it just as bad if not worse and what is the etiquette when it comes to picking bridesmaids and can a bride have a best man??? I basically decided that if I ever get married I will have to elope and then have at least two big parties for all the disgruntled rellys.  Of course, as my cousin pointed out recently, my wedding is entirely more theoretical than anything else right now, so...

Dream Pet: CATS!  I have two anyway and they are gorgeous and I love them and sometimes I wish they were snugglier but that's it.

Dream Job: I wish I had one :( It would be nice if I felt my life had some kind of direction :P

Hello! It's not a very interesting question, it won't change the face of the world but I'm still curious: why do you think Rhaegar named his first born Rhaenys instead of Visenya? All the thoughts I have about this detail are a bit weird, like maybe he wanted to change Rhaenys's fate or hoped Aegon would love both his sisters/wives or that maybe he thought about what happened with Aenys and Maegor. Maybe it's just because he didn't care or liked Rhaenys better but I'm curious about your thoughts

Oh, I do think it’s an interesting question, though I don’t have an answer to offer :) I wonder the same thing because, if he was trying to recreate the original Visenya/Aegon/Rhaenys trio (it’s not clear that he wanted to, but tbh makes sense, with the whole “the dragon has three heads” thing going on), why wouldn’t he name his first born, who also happened to be a girl, Visenya like the oldest sibling in the original trio?

As I said, I really don’t have a theory about it, other than I lean to think that it was something made on purpose –this was really important to Rhaegar, so I don’t think he’d act causally. And I also lean to think that whatever reason there was, it was linked to the prophecy more than a change due to sentimental reasons. Maybe the prophecy he read in a scroll as a child could shed some light, but sadly we don’t have access to the text (probably because GRRM is saving this information, I guess). I mean, the names are not important at all as we know now, but maybe there was something there that lead Rhaegar to think they were? So it’s really anyone guess, really! joannalannister has a really interesting idea about it, though:

My theory about this is based on the fact that at the time Rhaenys was born, Rhaegar still believed that he was the Prince that was Promised.  It wasn't until he saw the bleeding star/comet on the night that Aegon was conceived that he began to think about his children fulfilling the prophecy.  That said, I believe that Rhaenys was named deliberately for Aegon's sister-wife, but the reason that she is Rhaenys and not Visenya is because she is actually named for her father.  We know that there was plenty of racist, anti-Dornish feeling at court, and that the king himself was one of the worst for it.  We also know that Rhaenys from birth took very obviously after her Dornish mother and therefore did not at all resemble a 'pureborn' Targaryen princess.  Rhaenys' name is an assertion of her position; she is Rhaegar's daughter and, at the time of her birth, Rhaegar's heir.  Giving her a name so like her father's, and one belonging to a famous Targaryen queen clearly states her heritage as a Targaryen princess to those at court who would sneer at her because she 'smells Dornish' (thanks Aerys).  I also see Elia as having a hand in the choosing of this name, because although I think she was proud being Dornish and was always 'Elia of the Dorne', I see her as being very aware of her somewhat precarious position at court, and taking steps to ensure her daughter was recognised as a Princess of the blood and as Rhaegar's heir.   So I see Rhaenys being named for both Aegon's sister and Rhaegar, as two Targaryen 'heroes' (in Rhaegar's mind at least). I think it was only once Aegon was born and Rhaegar shifted his ideas about the fulfilment of the prophecy from himself to his children (I see him as announcing the night he saw the comet that they have conceived a son and taking Aegon's birth as a sign that he is right and the prophecy is coming to pass) that he decided he needed another daughter, a Visenya.  Now, it becomes apparent very quickly that Elia is unable to birth a third child, and as we all know, Rhaegar looks elsewhere for the mother of his 'third head'.  My theory is that the fact that he already had a Rhaenys is what caused him to look to Lyanna Stark as the mother of his second daughter.   From his sweet, gentle wife (Elia of the 'gentle heart and sweet wit', though we know she could be fierce and fight 'like a tigress' when threatened), he has Rhaenys, often described as the sweeter and more loving of Aegon's wives, and so he looks to the 'wild', fierce Lyanna who dons men's armour and practices with the sword to birth his warrior queen, Visenya.  I believe he assumed the mothers' personalities would be reflected in the daughters and so would create the 'perfect' heads of the dragon to support Aegon in his destiny.  Most of this is pure speculation, of course, but this is where my thoughts on the subject tend to go.

Part 6:  Princess Ariel as Lady Lysa Tully

Lysa Tully, back when she was the hopeful, pretty young girl that Cat remembers her as.   Her style of dress is similar to her sister’s, but simpler since Cat has higher status. 

Ariel seemed the obvious choice for a young Lysa; she has a wide-eyed innocence that seems present in Cat’s recollections of her sister, and a youthful excitement that seems fitting for Lysa before life knocked her for six.

I was working on Belle, but it was too darn tricky to get what I wanted, so I jumped to Jasmine. Again; very simple edit, nothing drastic. It was fun though! (for some reason I imagine Jasmine cutting of her long hair before running away, as a means to disguise herself)

PS: Which princess/princesses do you think I should give a shave? :D And do any of you know some historically accurate short hairstyles for Mulan, Tiana and Pocahontas? Or would it be okay to do a little whatever? :o

Part 4:  Anastasia Romanov as Lady Catelyn Tully

I see this as Cat listening to the negotiations in her father’s council, silently understanding and accepting that she must do her duty and marry Ned to secure the Tully/Stark alliance. 

I wanted Catelyn’s dress to be simple, but elegant, to reflect the fact that although the Tullys are the Lords of the Riverlands, they are not one of the ‘Great Houses’ of Westeros.  I also thought that fitted Catelyn’s personal style- her dress is elegant but not gaudy or too showy.   She’s also wearing Tully colours: blue to match her eyes and silver thread embroidery to indicate her status as a lady of Riverrun.  

Anastasia was the first character I thought of for Cat, partially because of her long red hair (Cat’s crowning glory) but also because of her reflective moments and her strong connection to the concept of family.  Her features are also a little sharper and longer than other animated women, which makes her seem more mature.  (Especially in comparison to her sister Lysa, who is coming next!)

Part 3:  Esmeralda as Princess Elia Nymeros Martell

Princess Elia of Dorne in Maegor’s Holdfast near the end of of the war. 

I do want to do a version of Elia in Dornish clothing, but here I decided to show an Elia who is wearing Targaryen colours defiantly, because even if Rhaegar seems to have forgotten the fact, she is still his wife, not Lyanna Stark. I imagine her dressing to make sure no one else forgets that.  That said, I gave her a floaty, gauze overdress to keep a link to her Dornish culture.  She is Elia of the Dorne, after all. 

Finding a character for Elia was more difficult than the others, but Esmeralda is compassionate and kind as well as fierce, sometimes vulnerable but always strong, and that seemed to fit for the woman who is remembered for her ‘gentle heart and sweet wit’ but who also fought ‘like a tigress’ against Gregor Clegane.  And I also liked the parallel between the attitude toward gypsies in Hunchback and the suspicion and over-sexualisation of the Dornish by the rest of Westeros.

Elia is one of my favourite pre-series characters, so I hope I did her justice.
