Whilst I think it is quite noble of youtube to stop monetizing videos which promote violence/drugs, etc., I still think the new yt guidelines are mostly crap.
If you didnât know youtube updated itâs âadvertiser-friendly guidelinesâ which basically states a couple new rules creators have to follow if they want to monetize their videos. But the reason why everyone is so pissed is because a lot of these guidelines are censorship and violation of freedom of speech and expression.
Youtube is not willing to monetize videos with âvulgar languageâ which means that your favourite youtubers canât swear or anything. This is bullshit because a) More than half of youtubers swear and b) Whatâs so bad about it? Itâs a way of expression and censoring it is taking away freedom of speech.Â
Not only that, but music videos by your favourite artists wonât be monetized just because they said âfuckâ or âdamnâ once or showed a titty/butt or idk made a sexual gesture.
This is Youtube, not primary school.
People arenât allowed to talk about âcontroversial topicsâ even if graphic imagery is not shown.
This is the bit that angers me the most because creators like vlogbrothers who make informed videos about political crisisâs, wars around the world, conflicts, natural disasters, tragedies, etc. canât make such videos because Youtube is a whiny 5 year old.
This guideline also includes videos about mental health, LGBTQA+, etc. that actually help depressed or lost teens. For example, lukeisnotsexyâs video about depression was given a strike just because he talked about how he overcame his depression and was in a better place now. Just because this is a âcontroversial topicâ or âtragedyâ.
This is utter bullshit because a lot of people actually benefited from that video. They realised that it does eventually get better and if their favourite youtuber had gone through what they had and still made it, so could they.
Tl;dr: Youtube isnât gonna allow video with a swear word, mention about war, mental health, LGBTQA+, politics, conflicts around the word, natural disasters like earthquakes and stuff, tragedies like terror attacks and god knows what else. Youtube is gonna become like your primary school.
