It's been a while.
I've been thinking about how spirits work have recently come to the conclusion that when Manfred "died" he returned to the Fade. The Spirit that returns may have been the same spirit that was unmade and reformed, but it is not the same exact being.
We wouldn't notice much of a difference because Manfred didn't really have enough personality visible to Rook, but the reformed Manfred would easily be able to mimic old Manfred, so the effect is the same and doesn't change anything of what we witness through Rook — but it does change the flavor of Emmrich's possessive hold on this spirit a little.
It's meant well. And the Spirit that returns, a reincarnation I suppose, chooses to come back and be remembered by Emmrich. That is enough for me to say it is not a choice like with Cole. Manfred/Curiosity chose on its own. That was the whole point of the ritual.
I am still very annoyed with how the Lichlords demonize it. As it is not Emmrich being unable to accept the death of another, but Emmrich being a Fade expert knowing his friend is still out there even if reformed because he is familiar enough to know if he remembers Manfred as Curiosity then it therefore still exists and wants to be remembered.
I do not yet have a headcanon to reconcile this anymore... So instead I am just rejecting that part entirely and saying Manfred chooses to come back on its own and Emmrich becomes a damn bulwark like he had always dreamed of becoming by overcoming his fear of death — not being trapped eternally by it.

I made a mod that swaps Emmrich's appearance to his Lich form just so I could have access to this scene. It wasn't possible using the save editor, so... I took matters into my own hands. Y'all I was DETERMINED to kiss on that Lich 😭

Ive been thinking about what everyone would be if they were a spirit... So here is the team as Spirits :V
I tried to be specific but some (like Emmrich) embody the whole of the concept not just one part of it. Bellara's was the hardest to think of because what makes Bellara "Bellara" to me is impossible for a spirit to become (because they can't be like that. They're unable to create things). Also Rook's depends on the player.
