With a lot of new fans coming into the sports this year I thought I’d share a story that I think often gets forgotten. We often talk about Charles Leclerc and how he lost his sporting god father Jules Bianchi. Well, his former teammate has a very similar story.

Maria de Villota, the daughter of an F1 driver, grew up racing, she took part in Spanish F3, the 24h of Daytona and she became the first Spanish woman to drive an F1 car. At the same time she was making time for another passion, teaching a new generation of drivers. She was a family friend of the Sainz family and as such she took Carlos under her wings. The first time Carlos drove a single seater it was with Maria by his side. However, in 2012 she signed on as an F1 test driver, and while testing an F1 car in the wet, she crashed into a vehicle on track. She was badly injured, losing an eye, but kept going for a while, living close to normally. Sadly, one year later she passed away due to the effects of her injuries. In October of 2013, the F1 drivers held a minute of silence for her at the Japanese GP.

In honor of her legacy an association working with kid’s neurological problems was started, and Carlos Sainz is an ambassador. Carlos held a beautiful speech in memory of her, honoring her and speaking about their shared love for cars. Till this day, on every helmet Carlos wears, you can find a red star on the back - honoring his mentor - Maria de Villota - and carrying her with him every time he gets in a car.
