according to the getting lost documentary, the reason why walt left lost and never really became a major character in rest of the seasons was because walt's actor was not 10 years old (he was 14 in the end of season 2) was physically aging too quickly and it would be too noticeable in the show

With how biblocal lost feels to me (although I am not a man of faith in any way) I really see Ben and John as some sort of a cain and able retelling. Both men competing (in a way) for the affection (and approval) of a deity and while they both try very hard and make sacrifices, the deity chooses John, as god chose Able. And out of jealousy and spite (and other things but come on it was there and thats okay) Ben kills him and is then punished for it (sort of but he always suffers regardless)
