Thomas doesn’t know how to respond. A couple of months ago, he might have agreed with her, told her to get out, that he never wanted to see her again.

But he’s had time to think now. He knows better. Knows better than to believe that any sense of betrayal was enough to make him hate her. He wanted to hate her. Oh, God, how he wanted to hate her. He wanted to feel numb whenever she said things like this, to be able to turn away and not give a damn how much it broke her.

But he can’t. He can’t bring himself to see hurt in her eyes, to stand to hear any measure of brokenness in her voice. And he knows that despite what he wants to believe, the words that are coming from her lips aren’t true.

"Don’t say that," he whispers, not able to bring his eyes up to meet hers. "That’s not true. I may…I may have acted like I hated you but I don’t. I can’t. I never could."
