It’s easy love, fits like a glove from up above together
Dylan was the man
“You’re twisting my melon, man!”
Alexa Chung: There was a really upsetting one when Alex had written me a Valentine card and I had accidentally left it in a bar. And someone sold it to the Sun and then they printed it, and they changed it so it didn’t look like a Valentine card, and they just said it was a love letter. They slated him for being really soppy. Look, it’s my boyfriend and it’s Alex. Of course it’s gonna be written like a story.
Interviewer: Was he peeved?
Alexa Chung: He was really cool with it,and he said, ‘I’m not upset that everyone saw it because that’s the truth and I couldn’t give a shit.’ And then he went [Chung dons a comedy northern accent], ‘Eh, but at least you’ve got a copy of it now, eh?’
Dylan, Warhol, Malanga and Danny Williams, 1965
Interviewer: I love “Sweet Dreams, TN.” On it, you sing, “I don’t recognize this fool that you’ve made me.” Is “the fool in love” theme something that you enjoy across the tradition of pop and rock, and are there any other examples of fools that have inspired you?
Alex Turner: It’s definitely a winner isn’t it, that old scenario. To be honest that tune is, I can’t remember ever really writing something that direct. Songs never happen for me like that. That was a definite, I mean, it’s exactly what it looks like, it is. I didn’t feel like there was too much craft going on with that. I just sat down. I really miss ya. And started playing an old Roy Orbison riff on an acoustic one afternoon, longing for someone. It’s kind of that simple.
If I have done something like that before, I can’t really remember it, and there is no other song on the record that’s that sort of visceral. To the point, to be honest with you, I wasn’t going to put it on there. There was almost too much truth in it or something. It was just this love letter and I kind of felt as if, and I did, it was only when encouraged by the recipient of the love letter to include it that I did.
