I really don’t get why people are mad at the ending. Like Ellie ran back off on her revenge mission to track down Abby (leaving Dina alone with a kid). What was Dina supposed to do? Wait around for Ellie to come back? Continue to live on her own with a kid and a farm, probably thinking the entire time that Ellie was dead? She obviously went back to Jackson and Jesse’s mom (JJ is her grandson after all) and to a community of people who would help her.

Ellie, on the other hand has lost so much, so many people around her have died and she’s still living - despite the fact that she should have died.

Riley. Tess. Joel. Jesse. She’s definitely feeling some kind of survivor’s guilt - especially with Riley. She also has PTSD because of all the shit that happened in Seattle. So even though she’s tried to put it behind her and move on, she can’t. She needs fucking closure so when Tommy shows up, she realizes that and she leaves the next morning.

But then at the end, she can’t do it; because I think she realizes that it won’t be Joel back. It won’t do anything. It won’t make her feel better. Just like beating Nora with a pipe didn’t make her feel better. She probably also sees similarities in Abby and Lev. So she lets Abby go and therefore letting everything else go.

And yeah, the last scene is just her walking away alone. But we don’t know where she’s going. She could be going off on her own (which I could understand because she’s lost so much) and maybe she will for a while and then make her way back to Jackson or maybe she will go straight to Jackson, or maybe she won’t go back at all because the memories will be too much.

The ending of The Last of Us was so open, so it make sense that the ending of part 2 is so fucking open.
