the paladin & his passenger princess
You know Mike was one of the only people to actually see El as human because he was the only one to ever suggest they help her. Everyone saw her for just her powers, but Mike still knew that didn't mean she never needed a hand. He created the tunnel plan for her. He suggested they help her in the finale. Everyone was talking about how El could handle it herself in s3 meanwhile Mike fought otherwise.
Everyone just assumed El could handle it all, but Mike saw a girl who was being held to a standard no child should ever have to go through
So don't even try to say he doesn't understand El. He may not personally relate to her trauma, but he understood her value as a human being and constantly fought for it when nobody else did.
That scene at the end of season 2 after El comes back and Mike starts hitting Hopper for hiding her and Hopper just holds him is such a beautiful scene and I hate the way season 3 ruins it.

how it started vs how it's going
My favourite part of season 5 is them finally acknowledging that Steve isn’t actually stupid.
He was never dumb. He was the audience stand-in.
The punchline was never that he couldn’t understand things; it was that the things happening were literally incomprehensible.
And watching him clock the pattern, pull it together, and come up with the final plan? Incredibly satisfying!
Let my boy be smart and brave and emotionally intelligent, actually.
“one last fight and this whole nightmare, it’ll be over” said mike wheeler, who then proceeded to never wake up from his worst nightmare imaginable.

The whole concept of El disappearing so the party could "mature" should've been scrapped the second the Duffers committed to making more seasons. I could kind of get behind it in S1 when El had less to lose, but the fact that they allowed El to have a taste of a normal life, to become a fully realized person with likes and dislikes, a loving family, established friendships, boyfriend, hobbies, and dreams only to THEN reel her back, strip her of everything she's built, everything good she's ever known, is beyond cynical.
El is SO much more than a metaphor or plot device- whatever the fuck they were going for. El is human, and all she ever wanted was to be a normal teenage girl, to love and be loved, to have the full human experience. She isn't some whimsical alien creature beholden to arcane rules dictating that she return to her own planet once she's fulfilled her duty to the party, she is quite literally a part of the party. And the implication that El's mere prescence is somehow preventing her friends from reaching their full potential is bizarre and gross, especially when you consider she's literally just a girl desperate for *GASP* connection and normalcy. 🫠
thinking about the life that was stolen from her.
