how others feel about your boundaries is not your responsibility

Something I heard from a friend a few years ago really changed my understanding of boundaries. A boundary is necessarily has to be something you can enforce.

"Do not call me after 9" is not a boundary. I can't control someone else's actions

"I do not pick up the phone after 9" is a boundary, I can choose if I pick up or not

I think a more useful way of framing this isn't about the semantics, but about the actions. It's perfectly reasonable to ask someone not to call you after 9, but it may be up to you to not to pick up.

When people say a boundary has to be something you can enforce it's not about how you frame it, but about those who try to manipulate others with therapy speak. It's more like

"I have a boundary where you can't see your male friends." Not a reasonable or healthy boundary; controls the other person.

"Please don't call me after 9." Reasonable boundary, sets expectations, can be referred back to if ignored.

To drive it home, some boundaries HAVE to be phrased this way. If I don't like to be touched, I have no way to set that boundary except to say, "Please don't touch me." I can't really enforce others not touching me, but that doesn't mean I don't have the right to set that boundary.

The way they took so much from El, not only in-universe (her name, her childhood, her autonomy, her family, her teenage years) but also the writers of the show deliberately took so much from her this season (the importance of her as a character, to her family, to her friends. Her entire life) The only thing they could never take away from her even if they tried is the love of the boy who was the first to show her kindness. The sky is blue and Mike Wheeler will forever love El Hopper more than anything. Nothing can change that. I'll kms

If Eleven is truly alive, Mike will find her. It might take years. But he will. Because if she's alive, they're still one. She's a part of him, and he's a part of her. He can literally feel her. Yes, it will take time, but he will find her. They will always find their way back to each other.

yes. we had those moments where you could SEE mike was feeling something, the implication being that it’s el, it’s a given to me that they will find each other. they are too much of each other not to

something about all the main characters surviving the craziest, most unrealistic scenarios completely unscathed with zero repercussions whatsoever - max from her coma, hopper, pretty much every main character - but for some bizarre fucking reason, el is where they draw the line? all of them getting their happy endings with the sole exception of el and mike, one of whom is at best alone and separated, and the other of whom endured the worst heartbreak of his life, watched his greatest fear become the reality for the second time, and will realistically never move on.

oh, el represents “magic” and “childhood” and the party can’t move on with her there apparently. because while everyone else is treated as a character in their own right, el’s entire life was treated as a metaphor. a fucking metaphor.

the most traumatised, mistreated, selfless character - and this was acknowledged in this VERY episode which almost makes it worse - was the only one who was not given a happy ending. “but you never let it break you … fight for the days on the other side of this”. what was it all for in the end? it all started with el and mike, and it ended with them too. they shared the same dream of staying together forever and growing old together, yet in some sick twist of fate they were the only two main characters who didn’t get their happy ending. el fought for the happy days, el never let her many awful traumas and bad luck in life break her, but in the end it didn’t matter. she was never going to get a happy ending with the rest of them.

the storyteller and the mage. the most special, the most selfless, the most tragic.

they really treated everyone like an actual person with the sole exception of el, whose entire life is just a fucking metaphor. it’s absolutely insane. hopper’s speech about how she deserved a better life beyond her trauma was all for what? shits and gigs? I’m fuming. el i’m so sorry. she deserved so much better.

absolutely haunted by the sheer raw anguish of mike screaming for el, their last kiss, the most passionate and devastating kiss we’ve seen on the show. they will always be stranger things’ greatest love story and this finale only proved that. el’s “i love you,” both of them crying, mike screaming for her over and over again. “i can’t live without you” “i can’t lose her again” “i can’t lose you”. mike’s one constant throughout every single season was his fear of losing her. his pure desperation begging her not to leave him killed me but showed so beautifully how much he loved her. how much they loved each other. “a love so strong it breaks down dimensional barriers.”
