Extraordinary Life Project reached new heights with a 2+ week to Southern Africa, where I made new friends, saw awesome (truly, not slangily) sights and gained new understanding of other cultures.
The ELP is not about making my life better than other people’s. It’s about living my life as fully as possible in a way that satisfies me. Hope others find what makes them satisfied and are pursuing it with abandon.

Just realized that the slang “hype” as in “hype man” and “get hyped” is probably derived from “hyperbole.”

Watching TV commercials
TV commercials have an almost-hidden level of entertainment: the disclaimers. My current favorite warning that went with a video of old people playing with children is: “Don’t try this at home, especially with grandchildren.”
Hilarious.
Most of my decades of reading and watching movies just collided in a lovely evening of actress interviewing author.
And how much for the cabbage leaf?
I want the story behind “This is not a candy” being printed not once, but twice (see the green part of the label), on this tasty, spicy seasoning.
Uber tales
From the girl who moved to the city and sold her car:
Midnight UberPool. I'm in the front seat. The driver is playing old r&b. Prince's “When Doves Cry” plays quietly. The couple in the backseat talks in low voices to themselves. Red light. I'm alone (with the driver), looking out the window at the city.
Across the street, I see an older man drinking a can of beer. He's alone, looks a little messy but not crazy or drunk. I watch from 30 feet away as he sets his beer can on a mailbox. He leans against the mailbox and looks up. It looks like he's looking back at me. Not weird. Just two people separated by glass and space but seeing each other.
I think, "No, it's in my head. This old man on the corner can't possibly be seeing me as clearly as I see him."
The light changes and, just in case, I wave goodbye to the man. He waves back and is gone.
Great ad copy for a service. A little wry, tells you what the service is by relating it to something familiar, short enough.
Icky design. Fun fact: Blue has been shown to reduce appetite, so don't use it in a food ad. Also, the food photos were a little too...wet looking for an ad on public transport.
sprezzatura - Aspirational word/concept of something being well thought out but appearing effortless. So Italian.
Your Brand at A Party
I love writing for clients whose brand is someone I'd want at my dinner party. Doesn't have to be the coolest kid on the block. In fact, it's kinda preferable if they aren't. Cool is cool from far away. Up close, it can be downright cold and hard work (not the fun kind, either)
Nah, I'm more into the quirky, quipy, smart but not pendantic. I want to sit next to that brand who went to college, enjoyed the Harry Potter books, is interested in other people, can quote "Coming to America" and is passionate about a pet project. Short sentences, deep thoughts.
While that's my sweet spot, it isn't mandatory. Right now, I'm working on a project where the brand voice is "extremely helpful customer service lady who loves People magazine." This is not the defined brand voice but what the voice has become without a strict style guide. It's a great project, even if the brand isn't my new fave dinner date.
The "dinner guest" used to be my filter for social media content. In the modern age of content as marketing, product and salesperson, the filter has become more of a veil through which all communications is seen.

Writing about two characters eating Ranger cookies (chocolate chip with Cord Flakes and coconut) is making me hungry.
False Seduction
Started National Novel Writing Month with a 12,000-word headstart. At the end of day 9, I have 16,532 words. Which means I went from being 12,000 words ahead of the deadline assassins to just 300.
They are nipping at my heels.
