Little Bodhi in the Big City

Hello. I haven’t been on this blog in many years. Life has changed so much. Bodhi is 8 years old now. I can’t believe it. He’s an old man. He has slowed down a bit, naps a bit deeper and longer than he used to. He’s still my goofy, ball loving, cuddle bug of a dog though.

He’s the best thing that ever happened to me. I truly believe he saved my life. I will be forever indebted to him for that. We worked together until early 2020. He was having some reactivity issues, and when the pandemic hit, we stayed home almost every day. So I granted him an early retirement to the house pet life.

In January of 2020 I brought home a miniature poodle as a show prospect. His name is Riot. Even though Covid slowed us down, we still earned his AKC Champion title all owner handled and groomed. We are working on his Grand and have been chasing that last Ch defeat for a while now. Entries for our area are low (at least for specials) and life put a pause on showing for a hot minute. We now also have a daughter of his who is 6 months old and will start her show career very soon. Her name is Dolly.

As for my personal life, I’ll share that I got married had a baby in 2022. My son loves the dogs. Bodhi is the best of the three dogs with him. He is extremely tolerant of my son’s toddler antics. I’m so very grateful for Bodhi. He has stuck by my side and taken life in stride throughout many major life changes over the last 8 years.

Thank you for being the best dog in the whole world, Bodhi. You mean so much to me. I love you more than words can describe.

DO NOT REBLOG unless it’s to reply (also this isn’t bodhi lol) So a little update!! I recently got a new job caring for and maintenance grooming show poodles for a renowned breeder in my area. Pictured here is one I worked on yesterday! It took me almost 3 hours because she was matted from coat change and I’m still new to banding. Bodhi comes to work with me but he is understandably not in his work mode with so many distractions. I’m learning lots of new things about poodles and showing and I may very well be trained as a handler soon too! Also I will be going to Sakura Con in Seattle this weekend and plan to have my friend take photos of Bodhi and I working so stay tuned for pics!! I know it’s been a while :)

Since they put it up, the number of pets I’ve seen in the store have drastically decreased, which makes it much easier for me to train Bodhi. It’s nice to feel like I’m being stuck up for.

The Duality of Dogs

My dog when in my room: Trying to eat the corner of my dresser, pawing constantly at his kibble bin, tossing toys onto my laptop, constantly pressing F11, an actual hurricane 

My dog when out working: Perfect heel, ignores food, sits when I stop walking, will lay down for extended times when I am busy, could probably fly if I asked him too

There are a lot of things that are obviously difficult to train, like learning to ignore distractions like other dogs, screaming kids, and food, but there are a few things that are surprisingly ShitToTrain™ your service dog.

tbh i always compliment service dogs instead of try to pet them, it's just as rewarding for them (at least i think lmao). a guy i work with has a sight dog and i always make sure to tell him that he's doing a very good job, and ask them both how their day is. idk. am i weird?

Personally (I don’t speak for all handlers) I find compliments almost as annoying as petting when I don’t know the person. I want to get through my day and do what I’m doing, not talk to people. 

My friends or coworkers compliment my dog and that’s fine. But the random people who come and say he’s so good or he’s pretty and expect me respond really annoy me. 

So you’re not weird, and if you know the person and they’re cool with it, go for it. But if you see a random service dog just ignore is generally a good idea

Poodle breeder recommendations

So I want to start looking for a future breeder.  I have almost definitely decided on a standard poodle.  But I need some help with finding good breeders.  I live in NJ, but am willing to travel.  And this won’t be happening for a few years but I figured, better be prepared.

This dog possibly will be a PSD prospect.
