While visiting a defenseless village, Rin calls upon Sesshomaru to deal with a late-night attack.

Bandit Raid

Rin pinches herself; an assurance that the bandit raid is not one of her nightmares.

Some homes are already engulfed in flames. The local midwife—the one she’s been sent here to assist—screams in terror. Rin sends a silent plea to Sesshomaru; this village wasn’t defended like Kaede’s was.

Against a backdrop of orange flames, silhouettes of men on horseback are struck down by a fearsome shadow. It dances aggressively as its claws slash bandit throats.

In the morning, as the villagers assess the damage and move the bodies, no one but Rin knows who their mystery savior was.

Days are better. Where if she isn’t seen in a good while, there are copious errands she could plausibly be attending to.

So while many couples wait for night to fall, to slink away under the cover of darkness—

“Call you a field mouse, the way you slip through the cracks.”

Rin intertwines their fingers and presses a kiss to his knuckles.

“Call me your dream girl,” the way she’s crossed into the ether.

Dapples of sunlight shine through the canopy of leaves above them.

“Shh,” she whispers. “Don’t wake me up.”
