somehow she remains both civil and tactful for those who quite frankly don’t deserve the courtesy.

they’re not friends but she laughs as if they are at every feeble attempt of a quip or witticism. through gritted teeth she feigns a smile, nods on queue to that reassure them that their sentiments are as interesting as they think they are.

she’s entertaining company she doesn’t care for, people who only want to be around her to entangle their web of connections within the realm of pretentious film fanatics and virtuosos alike.

and by the time they all finally part ways, she’s left exhausted and alone in a restaurant that seems eerily silent without the buzzing of businessmen and their socialite spouses.

but she’s not too tired to drink away her sorrows, and the untouched bottle of soju beside her is begging to be emptied.

“hey, pretty boy.” she tilts her head toward the empty seat across the table, hands moving nimbly to twist off the cap and fill a shot glass to the brim as she eyes the stranger. “wanna join me?”

they share the same selfish desire to feel wanted, and that’s why they always end up like this.

her head is in yeji’s lap, languid limbs outstretched in opulence and repose. her hair cascades across her thighs, strands of black against beige as deliberate and captivating as a painting covered with the strokes of someone in love with the canvas.

the warmth of her bare skin against the nape of her neck, the sense of ease that her presence brings, makes her melt until she pools into a sense of serenity that not even the harshest force could disturb.

and maybe it’s too self-serving, too thoughtless, but that’s what she does best.

“i could stay like this forever.” the words pass her lips as a murmur, insignificant rumbles that meld with the low hum of the record that spins behind them. “it’s nice pretending we don’t have a care in the world even if it’s only for a short while, don’t you think?”

seulgi groans as she forces herself to sit upright, heavy-lidded eyes full of the fatigue that fills her. she lounges listlessly, her weight held up by her palms, carpet digging into the skin and leaving temporary traces of its pattern.

“reminds me of that snow patrol song.” her hands slide past the trim of her pocket, grabbing at the pack of cigarettes that digs into her thigh. fingertips idly brush against the smooth cardboard, flipping the top open and grabbing at the contents greedily. “you know, ‘if i lay here, if i just lay here, would you lie with me and just forget the world?’“

her thumb flicks at the lighter, eyes closing instinctively to avoid the harsh sting of the smoke as it drifts upward and swirls in the air.

“that song fucking sucks.”

“excuse me, have we met before?”

she can’t quite place it, but his face isn’t one she’d so easily forget. he’s tall with a face striking enough to be plastered across every television screen, but the lack of shrieking prepubescent girls makes her question his prospect of being a celebrity.

“i’m absolutely sure we’ve met before. you look way too familiar for this to just be a coincidence.” her index finger finds her bottom lip, tapping away mindlessly as if the vibrations will send the memory back to her brain. “maybe you–” a pause. “no, that’s not it. it’s gonna drive me crazy if i can’t figure this out.”

she stares at him with an intensity that’s only mirrored by her curiosity, eyes narrowed and filled with fascination. it only takes a few moments of studying him for the realization to click, fingers snapping in pride.

“oh, i remember! i’ve seen you naked before.” she does her best to contain her giggles but one slips through the cracks and escapes, barely audible over the gusts that tunnel through the buildings. “sorry, nothing about your naked body was laughable – i didn’t mean it like that. i just don’t know why i didn’t think of it sooner.”

an awkward silence fills the air before she clears her throat, eyes shifting as she her best to ignore her how her cheeks are flushed crimson at her own lack of tact.

“maybe i should’ve just kept my mouth shut, huh? but curiosity killed the cat and i’m not quite ready to think myself into the grave.” there’s a sudden look of panic that flashes across her face at the realization that she’s left him without an explanation, hands flying up and frenetically waving in an attempt to physically clear the air before her words do. “wait. i took an art class and you were the... model. i can’t believe i didn’t start with that – i’m such a fucking idiot. sorry. ”
