There's a common misconception about the practice of meditation. Most often, people think of mantra meditation when they think of meditation in general. However, this is only one form of many.
Meditation can be a useful tool for internal communication. Kinds of meditation include mindfulness, body scanning, visualization, and more. These are the forms we'll be elaborating on today. I find that these forms of meditation are the ones that benefit me the most. I've learned them from my therapist and today we'll go over each one under the cut!
Mindfulness
It's often thought that meditation involves clearing your mind completely. This isn't necessarily the case, especially in the case of mindfulness. The idea is to allow thoughts to pass unimpeded and without judgment in order to find a pattern. Kind of like 'freewriting,' which is the process of writing anything at all without stopping or deleting what's written.
The most important aspect of mindfulness is practising radical self acceptance. This ensures that there is no internalized judgment, shame, or anything else that could cause an emotional spiral. This especially can take a LOT of practice.
While this form of meditation can be done alone, it takes time to master!
Body scanning
This one is great for grounding and relaxation, so it can come in handy in moments of stress or other heightened emotional states. Some folks use it to fall asleep.
This one can come in a few forms but the general idea is the same. One by one, consider each body part, and relax them until you've relaxed your entire body.
This form of meditation can be used to calm and soothe a persecutor or an alter in a state of high stress. Remember, radical self acceptance is important and there are no bad parts! So show the system the compassion they deserve.
Visualization
This one is easiest with a guide in my opinion. Luckily for us, there are a lot of guided meditation related videos on YouTube and you're free to browse them! This one is easier with eyes closed.
Think of visualization meditation as creating a daydream. This can be your internal world (very handy for this especially) or just a specific 'happy place' that you find soothing. Experience your daydream with all of your senses.
And then, within this daydream, begin a dialogue with yourself or anyone within the system. Be open and compassionate and understanding.
