You are the Halfblood Prince, but that’s a secret you will take to your grave. There was never any doubt of your intelligence, or aptitude with magic, but it’s never been enough. You have friends, but you know those ties are simply self serving, especially when you’ve become a trusted member of the Dark Lord’s army. There was a bright light in your life once, but a few wrong turns and they were lost to you. That had been your first, and your last true friend. Now you’re in a pit of snakes, and none of which are afraid to knock you down for their own purpose.
Eileen Prince was the youngest daughter of Aurologist Evander Prince and his wife Constance. Her parents were well-respected members of the wizarding community. Naturally, her parents were searching for a wealthy, well-appointed husband to assure their daughter’s future social standing. It was in Mr. Edmund Crawford, that they placed all their hopes and aspirations as a prospective match. He was a respectable young man, and the heir to a wealthy and widowed aunt with no children of her own.
The youngest Prince hoped for so much more than the life of a demure little wife who sits at home minding the house and tending the children. Despite her father’s hope that she could have all that she wanted Eileen finally gave in to her mother’s desires and consented to marrying Mr. Crawford. In time it was the expectation that she would begin to comprehend that he was exactly the man who, in disposition and talents, would most suit her.
However when Eileen met Tobias there was no turning her head. In comparison to his charm, Mr. Crawford was a tall, clumsy and awkward young man who added little to the general conversation. In truth, the young woman really dreamed of doing what was then nearly unthinkable for a pureblood of her status - marrying for love. As Tobias began to court her, she found herself increasingly attracted to this penniless, but keenly intelligent muggle. Simply unable to dispose of herself without affection Eileen Prince made a final and desperate attempt at freedom by running away with him.
Mr. Crawford, who condescend far indeed in offering to the daughter of an obscure and impecunious Aurologist rescinded his offer of marriage at once. It was on that quiet spring morning that Eileen lost everything; family, status, but happiness was within her grasp and she could not help herself. They were married in late April in Gretna Green, Scotland. It was not mentioned in the Daily Prophet as it ought to have been, her family could not stand the shame. Her mother never truly forgave her for the elopement, but her father was happy she had taken the man she wanted, not the one who offered the best price.
The following winter Eileen gave birth to a baby boy, whom she named Severus Evander Snape after her great love for her father. For at time they were incandescently happy. Yet the happiness of the union was not to last, because nothing destroys spirit like poverty. The young man had insisted she marry him, that he could earn enough to support them, while still supporting his family. Their love destroyed not only her own family, but that of Tobias’s as well. In a long, slow degradation of guilt and regret and blame the couple lived in misery.
Dispirited with his situation in life Tobias turned to alcohol as a way to cope with the thought that he was a failure. He had failed his family, he had failed his young wife and he most certainly failed his son. The muggle grew into a cold and bitter man who didn’t like much of anything. His depression would often rear its monstrous head in anger, lashing out at the only person he had ever cared for. Severus often remembered nights in his childhood where his mother would toss his father out or change the locks on the doors. She would always take him back, time and time again. In regard to Severus himself, Tobias seemed not to think much of his son or his accomplishments as a young wizard. It was this first taste of indifference that set a disdain for muggles deep in Severus’s heart.
Severus was a lonely child, who spent most of his days reading away from their home in Spinner’s End. Learning that he was a wizard had been a revelation that the young boy had clung on to for dear life. He learned everything he could about magic and found each new subject more fascinating than the last. In the summer of 1969 he finally met someone he could divulge his particular superiority to the form of a small redheaded girl named Lily Evans. Together they shared a profound secret. She was someone he could talk to, someone he could share everything he knew about the wizarding world with. He could even tell her about his parents and how often times he was afraid for his mother’s life. Lily Evans was a light in and otherwise dim and darkening world.
When they both boarded the Hogwarts Express for the first time, it was the happiest day of his life. He was leaving behind the dilapidated brick houses, dirty river and relic of a disused mill behind. Soon he would be deep in the Scottish Highlands at one of the finest magical institutes in the wizarding world and he would be there with Lily at his side. Whatever good spirits he might have had when he climbed onto the scarlet train were squashed by the time the sorting ceremony was over. Not only had he been bullied on the train by two boys in his year, but he’d also lost Lily to Gryffindor House.
While Snape thrived at school under the wing of, prefect Lucius Malfoy and his other Slytherin friends he could feel the relationship he once had with Lily begin to slowly slip away. Their ideals of the wizarding world became more and more dissimilar. The young Gryffindor had all the ease and grace to make new friends as easy as saying hello, but Severus was completely the opposite. He was often awkward in social situations and unsteady with his words at best when confronted by friends or enemies. The young Slytherin found the best place for his talents to be in books and the classroom. Lily believed that everyone was deserving while Snape thought those who broke the rules more often than not were abusing the privilege they were given by simply being a wizard.
“The dark arts were many, varied, ever-changing and eternal. Fighting them was like fighting a many-headed monster, which, each time a neck was severed, sprouted a head even fiercer and clever than before.” It was this excerpt from a book that Severus had once checked out of the restricted section that intrigued him more than anything. To fight that which was unfixed mutating and indestructible their could be no equal. It was a corrupting fight that he simply could not win and before the end of their seventh year Severus had given himself entirely to studying everything he could about the darkest of arts. Apologies seemed wasted on Ms. Evans, so he severed all ties with her and let his heart be hardened against her loveliness.
On graduating from Hogwarts Severus went his own way and took on a job at the Malfoy’s Apothecary in Diagon Alley. While Severus continued to be an excellent potioneer, he remained fascinated with the dark arts and later become a Death Eater as a direct result of the many wrong turns he had taken in his nineteen years of life.
lily evans » You’ve made mistakes — countless mistakes — and yet they were always on your side. You predicted a long time ago that forgiveness would one day run out, but you didn’t think that day would come so soon. Your first friend, really your only friend, now gone and you’re all alone. You hope one day you can do right by them, and that they can see you the way you’ve always seen them.
the marauders » Without a doubt, you hate them. With every fiber of your being, you wish to take from them the way they took from you. They had a hand in making you this way: resentful and desperate. But you’ll show them, you’ll show them you were the wrong person to mess with.
bartemius crouch jr. » They’ve got a knack for twisting words to make them sound nicer than they actually are. There’s a way about how they speak that is so charming that you’ve noticed they can get away with just about anything. It terrifies you a bit, but it also intrigues you. You only wish to be that manipulative of people.
