John Higgins is very old now. But he used to be very young. He plays snooker, and he plays better snooker than anyone else because he plays it on the edge of collapse and despair and he knows he can fly but he doesn't know how he does it so he has to just throw himself out and hope for the best, and sometimes he doesn't fly, and sometimes he doesn't even seem to exist, he disappears, he can't find position, he has no flow. Snooker only works if you believe in gods and fate, and it only works if you find flow and channel it without touching it, but it's invisible and temperamental and you can't look directly at it or pay it attention or it rears away from you like a spooked horse.

John Higgins has somehow got to the Masters final for the first time in fifty nine million years. John Higgins won't mind too much if he loses the Masters final, which he most likely will, but I find it agonising still, because the moments when John Higgins plays absolute utter snooker, are the best moments of life, and the moments when he misses ANOTHER long red and collapses into mortality, make me feel like the world is off centre.
