Hi! I heard about your cafè from a friend of a friend :) I will be attending your next open mic night. Just wondering if Speak! Philippines are recruiting members? I'm interested to hear about how to join your group :) thanks!
Hello~ Sorry for the late reply (the admin was on hiatus for 2 weeks in lieu of studies).
The next Spoken Word event for Sev's Cafe is April 26, 2014, Saturday, it's Open Mic Night: https://www.facebook.com/events/382184431921919/?ref=22As per Speak! Philippines, they're a very open group and showing your interest (and maybe a piece or two? :D ) in events they are present, or even joining here https://www.facebook.com/groups/speak.ph/ and interacting with the members online
(albeit, you're usually introduced easier by doing a piece on an event)
See you soon ^^
Facebook Group | Facebook Page | Twitter | Tumblr One of the iconic groups found in every poetry/ open mic night event held in the cafe would be Speak! Philippines. Founded by Judd Labarda, this group focuses on creating a community for Filipino artists in the realm of literary abandon and muses- where great minds have a meeting ground, and everyone is invited to share poems, get to know other spoken word artists like a family, discuss, plan for the next event (even share similar themed events, open mic nights, etc) and what not. The group started last March 23, 2013 (and yes, they celebrated their First Year Anniversary just this month also in Sev's). The group originally discovered the cafe last year around October 2013- mainly the launching of the Poetry Slam (currently known as The Verse). From then on, they have been regulars every First Wednesday of the Month and recently, a Saturday in the Month. Without fail, they have shared their creative minds and mind-blowing performances. Follow them and fall in love in the tumble to a wonderland for words- written or spoken- as they captivate you. As their name implies, Speak. Not only within the Philippines, but as your abilities, your heart and your everything wants to spill.
Event: Talahib

Talahib returns here in Sev's Cafe last March 21, 2014. It filled the night with their own flavor of World Music / Folk Rock / Reggae. Their performance was split in two sessions, filling the night with both songs renowned and their own original creations. The local flavor mixed with good music captivated many viewers. Official Website | Facebook Group The Bladed Hand is a film by Jay Ignacio on the topic of FIlipino Martial Arts. And yes, it exists. Bakbakan is a very prominent element that in reality, FMA is more acknowledged outside the country than within the Philippines. Arnis, Escrima and Kali, the recognized Philippine Martial Arts are covered in this film, from introduction, history, interviews and other facts that one should recognize, share and be proud of. The Film was shown last March 14, 2014 in the Cinemanights Event, ticket at 200 with 100 consumable. Present in the audience were some of the members of the FMA group in the Philippines. The filmmaker himself, Jay Ignacio was present and introduced and discussed more in depth in an open forum afterwards. The Bladed Hand is available in online stores for preview and purchase. Special Note: Jay reveals that there is an upcoming sequel for The Bladed Hand- and that he plans for this work to be a trilogy- something to look forward to. We're very much proud to share some of the Filipino Culture, especially one such prominent yet obscured talent of our nation, our martial arts. Excerpt from the creator: This is a documentary about the global impact and current state of Eskrima/Kali/Arnis, otherwise known as Filipino Martial Arts. FMA is our country's greatest cultural export and we're not even aware of it! Filmed around Cebu, Baguio, Bacolod, Batangas, Hong Kong, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Manila, Moscow, Oakland and San Diego. The Bladed Hand will show how this native art from the Philippines has had a significant impact on military systems and even on Hollywood. The Flute is more like the phantom jet- soft or loud, the Soprano of the Woodwind section. The Bassoon has the funny sound, but makes the essential bass. The Clarinet is the instrument which sounds closest to the human voice. The French Horn is the only Brass section member for this Quartet, and provides another dimension in sound. ---- Event Page

Review: The Verse, March 2014
Formerly Poetry Slam, The Verse is a monthly spoken word competition held every first wednesday of the month. March 5, 2014 A specific theme is given every month. For March, it was: Sweet Revenge: a different take on women’s month The event is slated to start every 7PM, but would usually officially begin by 8PM to accommodate those held by traffic and to have early dinner. However, by 7:30, the event experiences an influx of audience with a full house- a testament to spoken word scene finally gaining attention, and flourishing in Sev's. Around 8PM, everyone and the mood deemed ready to start. The night opened with a back to back performance of past winners of the Slam, M and Angel. Their performances are followed by the contest proper- the ball started rolling— in order, the 8 contestants: 1 Kat ~ 2 Louise ~ 3 Abby ~ 4 Dexter ~ 5 Angel ~ 6 M ~ 7 Nina ~ 8 Judd (we're used to their monikers so let's keep them named as listed) No explanations for their performance, for no words can describe the awesomeness, the energy, the happenings of tonight- and truly, nothing would give justice in telling you how everything went. (self-indulgence and hook-line-sinker motives? not really- we do believe that you would have had to be there to understand, to feel the energy of how that night went) About the contest, the criteria for judging are as follows: Content - 40% Performance - 40% Audience Impact - 20% Much thanks to our helpful judges: Marjorie Evasco, Susan Lara and Grace Ramos. Spoiler of the night: Judd and Louise for the tie-win~ perfect scores as deemed by the judges, unanimously. If you weren't there, that's two powerful pieces you have missed. Thank you to everyone who attended The Verse of March! We hope everyone who attended had a safe trip home and a really good night. We'll try to update this post for any resources for the special night. The next one will be either on the 2nd or the 9th of April, theme still undecided--
