A Pynnepillow as an Etymological Place-marker
A Pynnepillow as an Etymological Place-marker
Abstract The only thing that doesn’t bleed when pricked with a pin is a pincushion. However, in the context of the early English Language it is not the storage device of pins we are most concerned with in this documentation, but the word to describe it. Most of us today call it a pincushion, and the word brings to mind a small scrap of fabric folded sewn and stuffed, that then gets pricked…

Starting off with sufficient supplies and clear guidelines during current supply line crisis
Starting off with sufficient supplies and clear guidelines during current supply line crisis
The very first thing I did after paying and registering for the Master Craftsman in Surface Embroidery was to wait. It took a week for them to finalize and email me the forms and rules and general guidelines. The general guidelines are all at once very specific and very vague. You really have to read them over and over and over again and then start asking questions. Question 1. Is there any way…

On finishing the edges of an Embroidery with a Serger
On finishing the edges of an Embroidery with a Serger
Here at Mevanou’s Musings I mostly do Medieval research on Embroidery. Every once in a while you will find me posting little tops and hints on how to finish the edges for “Medieval” garments or items. This will not change. However, My blog will host my mundane persona’s Master Embroidery Trials for the foreseeable future. There are Six Steps the the Master Embroidery Trials in the EGA…

Adding a bit of Balance to an otherwise finished piece.
Adding a bit of Balance to an otherwise finished piece.
Lets start from the beginning. I started this piece with a 4″ by 4″ sketch in a notebook that was then put in a safe place and forgotten about. This sketch lingered in my mind as I puttered around my workshop, wondering what to do with some linen scraps I had laying around. The piece of linen that I chose was just barely 10″ by 12″-ish in size in a milk chocolate brown that worked for a base.…

A Class I taught at University of Atlantia. or Stumpwork through the Ages: Raised Figural Embroidery
Yes, I taught a class at University of Atlantia’s Session 108-9 This past September 18-19th. Yet another box I jumped out of, another comfort zone stepped away from..ad nauseum. I worked really hard on collecting the pictures and the information to create a slideshow. I am not too nice when it comes to describing the Catholic Church, just a heads up. It was recorded. and because it was almost 50…

A Mother and Child Raised Figural Embroidery Part Three: Where to learn the Techniques
A Mother and Child Raised Figural Embroidery Part Three: Where to learn the Techniques
These Following books will help you on your path to doing this wondrous type of embroidery. It is not a beginners craft, and I often think I have gotten myself way over my head and out of my league. (Snort) I cannot think of any other type of embroidery that will kick my ass, and pick me up by the scruff of the neck and tell me to do better next time. As I learn more about the techniques and read…

A Mother and Child Raised Figural Embroidery: The pieces of the past to lead me forward. by MvRY
Herein I show you what I found from the past that will lead me forward to finishing this piece of embroidery. The Raised Figures in Extant Pieces from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries. My success or failures for this project come only from my lack of expertise in executing the techniques required to create a raised figural embroidery, not in the lack of existing pieces. Those pieces have…

A Mother and Child Raised Figural Embroidery Part One by Mevanou verch Reys Yriskynit.
In the Beginning
When we look at the Virgin and Child we are looking at the Mother Goddess and Son archetype as it developed over several thousands of years. I love the imagery of a mother and her child. Iconic in symbolism all around the globe, every country in antiquity had legends and images of a mother goddess with a child. Mother and child worship was the basis of ancient…

Lid cupboard with compartment and pincushion. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Ot6JdJuhk/?igshid=15ojs65911cy1
Ugh. Facebook keeps trying to tag people when I try to post pictures of my latest project. This will Not be a toy chest when I am done with it. It will be a sewing box. Eventually I will cover it with raised embroidery panels. But for now I am lining it. The domed lid has a small cupboard with a pincushion and small compartment. This is a work in progress. The only really finished part is the inner lid. All else is changeable. And it's not for sale. Sheesh Facebook. https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Otk6ypnwf/?igshid=1k08z6ykuh2r0

First Attempt at Pyramid Etui
First Attempt at Pyramid Etui
This last week, I decided to draft and embroider and sew together a pyramid etui, or sewing kit/box. I could not afford to purchase a kit or pattern with instructions so I pulled my maths out of mothballs and drafted a pattern for the sides and base. This creation is intended to be an ornament in the Williamsburg Rose and Thistle Chapter Ornament Exchange in December at our annual Holiday…
