It’s almost midnight. He’s heard that parties could go on to the dawn, memories that escape them come morning. But it feels a little out of reach in his present state. Though, he wonders if anyone does that willingly. It sounds like something one would have to be high or canned to do without a second thought. Or maybe just someone with a little more self-confidence. The small percentage within him says he’s missing out, just like the previously very necessary piece to his outfit. Rolling his eyes at the retreating figure, he trudges forward.

The missing cape aside, he wonders where all the momentum had gone. Just how much of the 9:00 PM energy had remained with attendees? How many have headed home? A quick glance tells him that at least forty percent are still around, if his memory serves him right, that is. Without facial features, he’s left to memorize the hand gestures, speech patterns, and the most vivid of colors. On the flip side, the tribune writer part of him wakes. He even thinks he’ll make a feature out of someone. Perhaps he’ll see a new submission on this night in about a day — events that had fallen from his peripheral.

After a good five minutes of hesitation, he sneaks in a wonderfully colorful beverage before rushing to fix his mask back in place. Note to self: choose more breathable, and food-friendly material. Elias takes another, more thorough, look around the ballroom. He’s not searching for anything or anyone in particular, but as the music changes to something a bit more familiar — a violin piece he’s sure is in his phone somewhere — he spots a particularly wonderful person off to the side. He can’t lie to himself. He’s been stealing glances for a while now. The ball ends in about an hour anyway, so he should try for a dance while he can. The urge to walk up to them — stride more confident with the anonymity, and voice slightly altered by the mask — grows ever stronger with each step. “If it’s alright with you, would you care for a dance?” Elias bows with an extended hand, somewhat reminiscent of long, warm nights, and afternoon picnics.

To no one’s surprise, he eventually loses Chanyeol once the real event kicks off. Elias isn’t much of a party-goer himself, and even with the whole unrecognizable get-up, he thinks it’ll take some time to get comfortable. Some elements of this masquerade ball is his scene, though, so it’s not all bad. His shoulders slump as he idly wonders where to go from here. Does he try to look for the guy, or go off on his own? Surely, it shouldn’t be that difficult to find someone so tall. Quickly looking around, he guesses that Chanyeol would be with whoever is the loudest. However, his half-hearted attempts at really looking keeps him from center stage and off to the sides. A wallflower’s behavior, he’s grown to accept.

Even though he was mildly anticipating this masquerade ball, it somehow didn’t occur to him that he’d otherwise be left alone sooner rather than later. So perhaps it isn’t too surprising when he ends up walking a little slower as his eyes wander — only hoping to find someone he recognizes. That’s always Plan B, isn’t it?

It’s relatively simple to tell when he’s at the quad, or people watching by the food court. This, though? A huge ballroom filled with masked people wearing clothes they might not otherwise wear is straight out of a ‘where’s wally’ book. That is, until he spots someone who didn’t seem to put in that much effort into hiding at all. “Figures,” he says as he amiably walks towards Cameron. “If you’re not going all out, then what about all this piqued your interest to begin with?” Despite his remarks, he smiles in relief at a familiar face, albeit his own being fully covered. “If you’re here for the food, you sort of missed that by about,” he checks his watch — even now, he’s unsure whether it was necessary with his white gloves. “An hour? Almost.”

Of all the things he’s somehow tolerated in the time that they’ve known each other, a masquerade ball is probably the least annoying. There’s little to no chance he’s going to admit it, but in a way, it’s a guilty pleasure of his. Perhaps Chanyeol dragging him to the ticket booth two weeks in advance was a bit unnecessary, but he’s spent the rest of the time both loving and hating the ‘what will I wear?’ argument with himself. Elias isn’t quite skilled enough to make what he envisions a reality, so he had it tailored instead. The mask itself was almost a no-brainer once he saw all the options. White and gold accents that would otherwise be black if not for the suit itself. Being center stage was never in his prerogative, but perhaps for a night in anonymity, it was an opportunity worth taking.

In the end, what he settles on doesn’t surprise him. It’s reminiscent of the venetian carnivals he’s always wanted to attend. It’s not as flashy — clearly lacking the striking colors the carnival attendees would adorn — but rather it is lucid in its theme. It almost makes him laugh at how this concept’s interpretation stands in juxtaposition to the event on Valentine’s Day. Loosening his grip at the unfamiliar crowd, Elias takes solace in his outfit. Edna might be adamantly against capes, but for the purpose of this white suit and a mask that adorns his entire face, he felt like he couldn’t go without.

“If I knew we were going to arrive at the tail-end of the dinner party, I wouldn’t have bought the ticket.” His eyes wander to and fro without a destination in mind. At first glance, it’s almost impossible to tell who is who among the attendees. However, with a bit of patience, he might be able to make reasonable guesses throughout the night. A part of him counts on it, if only for the sole purpose of busying himself. “Though, perhaps we could still get the main course and dessert.” Elias looks behind him — the towering figure he’s been trying to grow more accustomed to while out and about — and sours at the realization that he won’t be able to read Chanyeol’s expressions, or anyone else’s for that matter, all through the night. “You hungry?”

Going south from the tribune, the halls of the student center crowd themselves easily at the dimming hour. Shopping venues would find better use elsewhere, he thinks. There are much better selections off campus, but similarly, he’s not in the mood for more travelling. Although it barely hits traditional dinner times, it’s clear that everyone wants to escape their academic worries tonight. Elias follows the general sentiment the closer he gets to the food court. A series of vending machines, with the promise of caffeine and a quick snack, is discarded the moment he sees Minseok. Trading one idea of junk food for another, it seems. With a hand propped on Minseok’s shoulder, his brow is raised in question. “You skipping on your stream tonight?” He pauses as he scans his face. Not that he hasn’t missed his fair share of Minseok’s streams before either, but there is an increased level of personal concern when they removed the screen barrier. “Otherwise, play me at Street Fighter, and the loser pays for dinner.” He nudges his head in the direction of the arcade, not at all sure the game would even be playable tonight.

“It’s no problem, really!” Usually, she’d be lying, but tutoring and helping others with their studies does actually make her happy — the real her, and not the overly polite girl she pretends to be. It’s a nice reminder that she’s not the only one here for an education rather than to cause as much trouble as possible and pass the time until their parents just buy them their degree, after all. She laughs. “Unfortunately, I’ve had him for a few classes, so I think I’ve just naturally built up the speed you need to keep up with him.” She peeks at his document when he opens up his laptop and it doesn’t seem like there’s much he missed, so she wonders if perhaps it’s more a case of not understanding than missing something entirely. It’s easier to ask at the next opportunity, though.

“That’s true; though everything else is always kept nice and tidy and you don’t have to manually read everything if you’re looking for something specific.” There’s pros and cons to both study methods; it’s all about what works best for you. Dahye tends to prefer paper, since then she is forced to read and digest everything to find what she wants rather than skip straight to it with CTRL and F. “There are some ways to draw straight in, but with the speed he goes, I would recommend having a few post-its in your pocket to doodle graphs on for reference later, or taking pictures with your phone.” She hums. “Mathematics, actually, though I feel like art might be more fun.” Her smile is sweet, “What’s yours? Oh, and where would you like to start? I try to start anyone I tutor with the things they feel most confident on, so they can build up to the harder stuff, but I don’t know how much time we have — or what it is specifically that you missed.”

Truthfully, he doesn’t catch it at first. Dahye stutters that bit at the compliment, and he wonders if he’s missing something. “You’re welcome.” He glances between her, her notebook, and his screen. By all means, she doesn’t seem like any sorts of shy, even on air. But well, they share the same class, and they’re talking now, so he’s bound to find out somehow, right? Now, though, there seems to be more enthusiasm for the material at hand, or perhaps the prospect of teaching someone else. It’s best to review the lessons after class anyway, so he’s certainly not opposed to it.

Elias nods along to her words. It’s the familiar voice, the friendly nature of it that he’s used to hearing solely through his headphones. So it takes an extra second or two to realize he’s supposed to respond verbally in turn. “Have you? He definitely goes through the material quickly.” He finishes up adding to and editing the document to suit his memory, and slight aesthetic tastes. “Though I’ve also learned that some math teachers aren’t as great at teaching as they are at solving equations.” Part of him thinks they’re all rather introverted, but clearly Dahye’s a exception to it.

He almost grimaces at having to write post-its for future reference. Surely something quick and simple is well, quick and simple, but he’s not that fond of typing one-handed afterwards. “I think I’ll do the picture suggestion, provided I don’t get in trouble for that.” He smiles down at his keyboard, fingers still hovering over the keys for something to do. Looking back up at Dahye, he’s only slightly surprised by her answer. “Math, huh? Was that a personal choice?” It’s rare, he thinks, to find someone who enjoys any form of math. Besides, he’s partly in his own major for his mother anyway. “I’m in the biochem engineering program. Though I wouldn’t knock the art option just yet.” He chuckles, completely sure he wouldn’t even qualify for it. “Seems like art’s rather subjective, though, even more with the profs. Math, science… They’re still true whether you believe in it or not.”

Scrolling back up the document, he pauses at one of the example questions. “I’m pretty sure I got the solution right on this, but I don’t think I actually wrote the right numbers. Same with the next question since the method is the same, except I got a negative value.” He gestures to the blank board, still envisioning the homework they were assigned. “You can work on the homework in the meantime, though, so it’s not all spent time.”

her saying it’s her pick is bittersweet — reminds her of the summer that he said that to nearly everything she suggested, from traveling on their own for most of their time in italy to walking around flea markets til her legs ached for rest, but it also reminds her that whatever’s been going on between them for the past few months isn’t her choice. but she can choose now, right? as much as her inclinations for self-preservation screams at her to stay away, she can’t, so the answer is easy. “ lasagna. i don’t have anywhere to go anyway. do you? ” are you staying?

when he stops, his gaze traveling elsewhere, goosebumps line her forearms, suddenly wondering if he’ll recognize the dried flowers hanging in the hallway, if the polaroid she dropped is visible from the kitchen because he’s nice enough to pick it up for her, nice enough to decide that it’s not his business to poke around her things. but it’s a photo of him after all and who’s to say he wouldn’t know with even a quick glance? brows lift at the question and she swallows thickly, unaware she held her breath longer than normal. “ i’m still taking general education for now. you know, history, psych, stats. still seeing which ones i can take til they close the list. you? ” with a huff of her cheeks, she looks up at him, leaning against the opposite counter. “ i joined cheer. not as a main, um … ” what would she even call it? “ sian still has me learning the stunts and routines. ” a good distraction, really, and sian to keep her grounded.

As much as he’s keen on starting, eager to make use out of his otherwise damaged hands, similar thoughts plague his mind from last year. It was the first time he cooked for her, using a kitchen foreign to him. The difference might be the state they’re in, though. There’s so much uncertainty to this, as if they just reunited yet again. As if he didn’t confess to her already. One can’t revert through time, but it sure as hell feels like it. At the very least, there isn’t as much pressure to cook this time. Or perhaps there is— And thus begins his spiraling thoughts.

When Lara answers with lasagna, he swallows. That presents a period of time where they’ll only be waiting around for it. But perhaps they could busy themselves with something else? Surely there are enough things around for a dessert. However, what he really wants is them to fall back into it somehow. Fall back into each other, if ever possible. Elias clasps his hands lightly, a broad smile upon his features. “Lasagna it is. Could you help show me where things are? You’re always so organized, I don’t want to mess it up.”

Turning around, he takes an absent check of the ingredients they’ll need, and puts the rest of it back in the shopping bag — sliding it over to the end of the counter and out of the way. He nods, familiar with the classes, but not quite remember all of the material right off the bat. “Are you having a hard time?” He looks at her when he asks, but eye contact never lingers for long with him. “Some upper division bio and chem, lab stuff. The internship might have loosened it up for me.” Huffing, he’s not sure he means it. “A few additions and it’ll qualify for the medicinal track, though I’m not sure I want to go there.”

“Wait, you joined cheer?” Raising a brow at that, it’s surprising yet also not. He separates the last of the packaging materials — plastic, saran wrap, etc. — with the food itself. “That sounds really great, I think it suits you.” Not that he has any right to say otherwise. Elias always held the impression that Lara’s a bundle of joy. “How is it, though? Does it interfere with your kumdo and track any?”

😁 - Someone just tripped and fell in front of your character. Do they laugh or help the person up?

That kind of depends on the situation. If he expected it, he wouldn’t necessarily warn the person and watch it play out instead. He’d shake his head, somehow disappointed that they didn’t see it coming themselves. But if it were to happen by surprise, he would definitely laugh. Most times he would laugh. If they’re close enough, he would help.

💡 - What is the best idea your character ever had?

Him and his cousin, Diana, thought it’d be a great idea one bored, late Spring afternoon to go camping by a reservoir. It wasn’t a free-roaming area, though. In fact, it was fenced, but what did that matter? It wasn’t guarded anyway. Suffice it to say, they didn’t get to stay for long when they broke out the dogs ( presumably for a patrol ), and chased them through the forest area. They slipped jumped down the waterfall, and Elias had to ask for a new phone and game boy a week later. Okay, maybe not the best idea, but it was fun!

💍 - Does your character wear any type of jewelry?

Elias tries to wear rings sometimes, but then his hands cramp, so they’re rather short-lived. He does wear loose, threaded bracelets and silver band bracelets regularly. Should probably also count his piercings as well — multiple in his ear lobes, and left eyebrow. Though they’re all typically plain silver as well.

🌜 - Is your character an early bird or night owl? What makes them that way?

Elias is an early bird. At some point after his chaotic senior year of high school and his gap year, he decided that he should follow all these advice articles / blogs to create a routine, a schedule. No one made him this way, and he doesn’t know if it even helps him in any way, but he still does it.

💒 - Does your character want marriage or a lifelong commitment?

Truthfully, he hasn’t really thought about this. His priorities likely lay with maintaining relationships at the moment. But if it’s really an option, would a marriage that lasts a lifetime be an appropriate answer?

🔮 - Your character is having their future told by someone pretty shady. Do they call the fortune teller out or just roll with it?

Although he would just roll with it initially, knowing full-well they’re full of shit, if they start spewing out some particularly outlandish ‘predictions’, he’ll be quick to call them out. Not in the most direct sense, but in how he’ll word his questions to poke holes in the predictions.

📬 - A mysterious letter has just been found in their mailbox. How does your character react? Who would it be from?

Elias is the type to take pictures of his deliveries, so this would be no different. It’s a letter, though, which he doesn’t get often, so it’ll be out of habit. This mysterious letter doesn’t have a return address, and the sender’s name is in gibberish. When he opens it, however, he finds that it’s from his kid-self. The memory escaped him till then, that he learned to send letters by sending one to himself and his dad all those years ago.

🎠 - Your character is at the carnival. What kinds of rides or games do they check out to entertain themselves?

Naturally gravitating to the more fear-inducing rides, he’ll be ignoring the pirate ship swings for the drop towers. However, what he’s really after are the carnival games. He’s more into the skill-based ones, like the shooting and dart games.

💢 - What frustrates your character more than anything?

One of the most notable frustrations Elias has is dealing with misunderstandings. This takes the most time to come down from. It also causes him to over-explain frequently to avoid it. If it involves a language-related misunderstanding, however, he’ll be neck-deep in a thesaurus afterwards.

the choice of food doesn’t register at first. lasagna. fettuccine alfredo. but the more she watches him, the moment he bumps against the wall and she finds herself laughing, smile hidden behind her hand as she fights back the urge to continue, she realizes how familiar this is to her; elias in the kitchen and lara waiting to see just what he’ll make for her. right, it’s italian and she can’t tell if that much is just to remind her yet again that the summer was different from the one before.

without knowing which one it is, she doesn’t know how to help him start so she stands next to him instead, gaze flickering towards the bag as she leans in to try and peek inside. “ is it my pick or are you offering both? mm, lasagna takes a long time, doesn’t it? ” and suddenly she’s wondering if choosing has a lingering undertone to it, if it’s specifically about the company he mentioned just outside of her door too. then again, when has she ever asked him to leave?

It doesn’t occur to him until he has to pull all of the ingredients out. One will take longer than the other, and both have different means of cooking. The easier, longer lasagna versus the medium-level, shorter fettuccine. Ultimately, it’s Lara’s decision to make. Pulling out some common ingredients, like garlic powder and nutritional yeast, reminds him where he learned to make these. Perhaps he should go looking for the phone he used last year’s Summer for memory’s sake. It doesn’t hurt that bad now, not when it was a clear misunderstanding. But what’s up with the universe trying to make it that much harder for them to be together?

“Yeah, your pick. I’ll make whatever you decide.” And with that, he supposes, perhaps Lara would want something else. She surely has other things in her fridge, right? Moreover, he could cook one serving just for Lara. That way they wouldn’t have to spend dinner together if she doesn’t want him here. But boy, does that hurt more than the polaroids he keeps in his drawers. He asked for them, too. The few times he asked her to take a photo twice, a copy for himself. “I suppose it does. Then, would you prefer something else?” He stops his movements, sure there’s probably only the marinara sauce and lemons left to take out.

Elias turns around, leaning against the counter as he takes a gander of the dorm. He’s really never stopped to take it in. It seems that emotions take more out of his concentration than he likes. Or really, he’s not used to having so many of them at one time. The place where Lara spends most of her time, he thinks, which reminds him to ask. “What classes do you have this semester?” It’s his way to ask whether she’ll be ridiculously busy. Whether somehow he could spend more time with her. He always makes it a point to stay busy, always have something else to do with himself, so he’d argue all of his semesters are. But he won’t mind if Lara’s is as well. One way or another, he’ll make it work.
