I was answering my research question “How does music education effect academics in school?

             I transitioned between my two sources by writing “this pattern also continues with students that excel in music.”

 A recent study found that student in high-quality school music education programs score higher on standardized tests compared to students in schools with deficient music education programs.” In figure 1, the table shows that “students enrolled in fine arts courses score from 11 to 13% higher than students not enrolled in any fine arts courses.” (“Students enrolled in,” n.d.)

This pattern also continues with students that excel in music. In the competitive division of music in the Texas. “Texas All-State musicians have consistently scored about 22% higher than the national average and about 25% higher than the Texas average.” ("Five-Year SAT Score Comparison," 2011)

  I was answering my research question “How are budget cuts impacting music education programs?

             I need a way to transition between my sources that show how music is not getting any of the funds it needs, to why people don’t believe music should be getting much funding.

 Because of all these budget cuts, a lot of the weight is left on the teachers and students. Teachers are also being left without jobs, which means no music classes for the students. Teachers and students are spending valuable time figuring out how to keep their programs running because of these budget

cuts. Slaton (2012) stated that “Due to the budget crisis, music teachers are losing their jobs because schools cannot afford to keep them. Existing fine artsprograms are also suffering. Teachers are scrounging for options to keep their programs alive, from fund-raising to having students contribute money so that the program can afford to function.”

Some people don’t believe that music programs are important, and should not be funded because they are so expensive to run. It is also stated that “The primary argument against the inclusion of things like art and music in school curriculum is that it distracts from those areas that are more relevant in the ‘real world’ and in terms of developing job skill... the funds required hiring music teachers, purchasing equipment for their classrooms, and making other budgetary allowances for their programs takes money away from other areas where it could be more wisely spent.” (Slaton, 2012)
