“Writing songs,” says Paul McCartney, “is like following a trail – and you never know where it will lead you.”

Today, the trail has led us to McCartney’s studio in rural Sussex. Rabbits snuffle around the garden and the English Channel shimmers in the distance. There are worse places to work.
