Silent Hill game rankings
I wrote this for a reddit post but it won't let me comment for some reason so I'd rather not have wasted half an hour.
It's my rankings for the games with reasons for why they are where they are. Top one is the best, bottom one is the worst
Silent Hill 3
- The best writing IMO
- One of the two pieces of horror media that's given me nightmares as an adult (the other being the original Texas Chain Saw Massacre)
- The magical girl costume mixed two of my hyper-fixations into one game.
Silent Hill
- Harry's an excellent example of gentle masculinity
- The atmosphere has aged very well despite the visuals aging less gracefully
- You're rewarded for exploring the world they created with an entirely optional subplot that's required to get the best ending
Silent Hill 2
- The writing is tight, but it's far less subtle than 1 & 3
- I probably like the cast of characters the best, but prefer the writing or feel of the first two
- It's genuinely a close race between the first 3 games in the franchise for me
Silent Hill Origins
- I like the connection with the first game and Travis as a protagonist
- Again, you're rewarded for exploring by getting Travis' history with Silent Hill
- I like the breakable weapons mechanic as it adds another layer to the survival part of survival horror
Silent Hill 4
- Still a great game, it just falls flat in a lot of places and has far too much backtracking/returning to levels
- I like the first person sections and think they add to the feeling of claustrophobia within the apartment and that you're almost rewarded for being a voyeur, so it makes you feel a bit icky in a way that only a good horror game could
- Walter is an interesting villain and a nice throw back to newspapers from SH 2
Silent Hill Shattered Memories
- I like the psychology aspects of it and how the world changes depending on how you interact with it
- I kind of like the approach they took with the story and its ending
- However, the controls kind of suck, even on PS2
Silent Hill Downpour
- It's a good Silent Hill inspired game, just not a great Silent Hill game.
- Cool opening music by KoRn that's the best part of the inoffensive soundtrack by Daniel Litch
- Murphy was an interesting protagonist.
Silent Hill Orphan 1/2 (Flip Phone Mobile games)
- It was interesting to see a point-and-click adventure game set in Silent Hill that fits with the tone of the franchise
- Double Helix did their best with the limitations they had.
Silent Hill Homecoming
- Boring characters (except Wheeler)
- Has a lot of good ideas that fall flat because there were far too many writers that had to be reigned in
- Awful combat that relies far to much on dodging. I like this in From Software games, but not in survival horror
Silent Hill Book of Memories
- Who thought it was a good idea to turn Silent Hill into a hack-and-slash dungeon crawler?
Silent Hill Escape (Mobile Game)
- It's a subpar mobile game even compared to other mobile games of the time
