happy wriggling day to karkat and kankri!!!
yes, it's also technically kankri's wriggling day too (hopefully)
now, i find it endearing that karkat's and kankri's wriggling day is in june, in pride month, because technically they both count as queer trolls in the troll society
they're both panquadrant, so i decided to design a panquadrant flag for them to celebrate pride!
now before anyone could say anything i'll just explain what that means
troll society in the norm is pansexual and polyamorous
but despite that it very much limited by quadrant system, where every troll should have only four-five partners in designated 4 quadrants
you can't have more partners in the same quadrant and you can't have all 4 feelings towards the same person
karkat, kankri, signless (and possibly disciple and imposter) are the only trolls who break that quadrant system, they experience all 4 feelings towards the same person and they cannot share the same person with anyone
they're monogamous in the troll society which is polyamorous in the norm and that makes every vantas and possibly meulin/disciple queer
now, the term panquadrant isn't even created by me, i just gave it a meaning, it's actually a term from the comic itself
this term was used by kankri to describe his own identity
but i know many homestuck fans just didn't read what kankri was saying in any of his lectures, i mean, conversations...
i want to theorize and interpret his interesting way of describing his identity, because it's pride month, it's interesting to think about what considers to be queer in the troll society and i'm an insane kankri fan
in his own words, kankri is "a pale ar9mantic, panquadrant demir9mantic, s9mething in the gray palesexual department 9r such", which sounds incredibly funny, these words could mean fucking anything and i'm not even sure if andrew hussue even had the intention to give to all of these labels meaning, it's one of the "kankri is just too woke" jokes
but anyway, let's theorize what this all could possibly mean:
1. "a pale aromantic" is one of the obvious parts of his identity, at least to me
it means he's aromantic in a pale quadrant, meaning he doesn't experience platonic love or he doesn't need a moirail, a platonic partner
2. "panquadrant demiromantic" is a little bit tricky. "panquadrant" can mean fucking anything, but i decided to interpret it as "being able to have all 4 feelings towards the same person", which makes sense if you remember karkat's crush into terezi and kankri's crush into latula
and demiromantic part is interesting in kankri's case, because it means he can develop romantic feelings, but only if he formed a deep emotional bond with someone, which explains his crush into latula
3. "something in the gray palesexual department or such" is the funniest part of his identity. i have no idea what "gray palesexual" could possibly mean and i'm pretty sure kankri isn't sure about this part either
but let's break this down: gray and pale in most cases associate with auspisticism and moirallegience, and "sexual" part is, well, about sexual relationships
"gray palesexual" could mean a person who can experience sexual attraction in the gray and pale quadrants, which kinda makes sense? because vantases love to mix all their feelings together and they possibly can start feeling sexual attraction to the person who supposed to be their moirail, a platonic partner
but i believe, this is my theory, "gray palesexual" doesn't entirely fit into kankri's identity, that's why he isn't sure in this part and uses such confused way of putting words
i mean, if there's a troll in the vast worlds of alternia/beforus, who would lay into bed with two kismesissitudes, the gray palesexual term would 100% fit them and be 100% valid
but kankri isn't gray palesexual to me, at most, he's possibly just palesexual, because in my understanding every vantas is monogamous
i also think that kankri conveniently missed and didn't say the last part of his identity that should go after "gray palesexual", if he identifies with the "sexual" part of said identity
he should be demisexual at best
this is very interesting and very telling of his character, he doesn't want to remind anyone once again that he CAN experience romantic feelings and even sexual attraction, because he's trying so hard to pretend that he doesn't need any of this, he doesn't need relationships and that he's an independant troll in a celibacy
kankri should be "a pale aromantic, panquadrant demiromantic, palesexual and demisexual" in my understanding, but this is just my theory perhaps
i would go on about kankri's character in detail for hours, but i know nobody wants to hear from me about how kankri's choice to become a celibate was actually influenced by his own internalised queerphobia and a strong fear to mess up in the quadrant system driven society
and that's why i also think karkat and his relationship with dave is 100% queer by troll society standards, nobody just thinks about it too much
now there's a debate if karkat and kankri are even monogamous, i know this, because there's people who ship karkat with more than one person
but the comic just has too many examples why karkat's polyamorous relationships just don't work, he tried many times to conform, but it just didn't work out
his jealousy and wanting to be loved and to be with someone exclusively just hurts the other person
and that's why karkat ended up being comfortable in a relationship with dave, a person who has no idea how quadrants work
and that’s also the reason why kankri decided to let go latula, so she would be in a happy relationship with mituna
he wouldn’t impose strict monogamous relationship onto her and he wouldn’t try to fill her other quadrants despite three of them being vacant
he couldn’t share latula with mituna the same way it didn’t work for karkat with terezi and dave
