Raditz got assigned to Vegeta's squadron as a child because they were close in age and shared a blood type. In fact, there are a lot of genetic reasons the two wound up in the same squad. After all, if your planet's prince suddenly needs a kidney then who better to get it from than a third class brat with no political pull or importance?
