I remember watching this documentary (twice, actually) and sobbing uncontrollably. This scene really hit me because she let these words out reluctantly. She was silent and then said “wait, I have something to say.” We often forget that not everybody is just “accustomed” to their circumstances and that some people are just “built” to endure these hardships. They too suffer and they too want a way out.
My own son??? Happy to see ME??? For real?!?
Society has a double standard for what being a "good victim" entails
Sexual assault? A "good victim" fights back as much as they can, protests loudly, calls for help. The reality is that many people freeze or shut down in those situations.
But child abuse? A "good victim" cowers in fear, makes themselves as small as possible, apologizes and begs for forgiveness. The reality is that many of us got angry, stomped our feet, screamed in rage.
fight, flight, fawn, and freeze.
You don't know how you'll react until you're in one of those situations, and it's not a choice. No matter how someone responds, it doesn't make them any less of an innocent victim.
When your reaction is “fight” and as a child you even actually retaliated on the physical violence, you are demonized completely. If you hit back you’re called the abuser

Actually, it should be the same for everyone. You don't owe anyone sex. You can say no for any reason or even without a reason. Even if you're in a relationship. Even if you're married. Even if they're sad about it. Even if you've been saying no for a week or a month. Whenever you want, it's your body.

I am Najah Al-Hila, married to Khaled Muqdad from Gaza City. I am a mother of four young children. My family consists of Waleed, 9 years old, Mira, 6 years old, Ahmed, and Mayar, 3 years old.
Ahmed suffered from head cramps and increased electricity after his birth. He was given medication and had blood tests done every two months to make sure his health was stable. He suffered from these cramps in 2021. My husband also suffered from liver and digestive system problems five years ago and is still suffering from these problems. Over time, my husband was injured during the war, which made things worse for him. We thank God for everything. Because of the instability and unavailability of the medication, we face difficulties in buying medications due to their high prices. Now life has become very difficult and the prices of medications have increased due to their scarcity. Things have become more difficult due to the lack of money and his expensive treatment, which has led to its unavailability due to money. I hope that all donors and supporters will not forget Ahmed and his father Khaled in alleviating their pain by providing the costs of his treatment and buying him the appropriate medicine and food. We also do not forget his brothers from the malnutrition they suffered from during this difficult period.

Got reminded again of my old coworker who was a massive misogynist but also trans inclusive. Told me he believed trans women are indeed women because "only women would be stupid enough to want to be women"

He also aggressively corrected himself whenever he accidentally misgendered a trans guy we knew because "there's already more women than men in the world, the more numbers we steal from them, the better." Did that even when the trans guy wasn't around.
I need to point out that he was completely serious btw. This man had no sense of humor on purpose.
He was a cook at the restaurant/bar I was a bartender at, and almost punched a costumer once because he overheard him talking about how women belong in the kitchen. Told me he thought women should stay out of kitchens, that cooking is a man's job and when I asked him what he thinks women should be doing, he went quiet for a moment, then proceeded to explain to me the following
"I trust a bitch to run a kitchen as much as she can run a country, they should do shit like plumbing. Or electricity. Something you can just learn to do and don't need to lead, you know?"
Apparently women are good at "fixing shit". He claimed that he doesn't trust male plumbers or electricians except if they're gay because "something most be wrong with you if you want to go fix other people's houses, that's that maternal instinct"
