Nukes (or Nuclear bombs, or Fission Bombs, etc.) use a process called Nuclear Fission. Essentially, You're splitting an atom, Usually Uranium, into smaller parts, which releases a LOT of energy.
Do that fast enough and your nuclear reaction Creates a flaming hot ball of plasma that's hotter than the center of the sun.
This blast is incredibly lethal in 3 ways.
1. The Fireball: This literally vaporizes anything and everything within its range instantly.
2. THe shockwave: This fireball expands really quickly, which sends a massive wall of scalding hot air flying in all directions. And like a tsunami made of boiling hot air, Cooks all living anything, topples buildings, sends heavy shit flying, etc.
3. the Radiation: After all is said and done, You still blew up uranium. Radioactive particles will be spread everywhere.
In case someone doesn't know what that means. Radioactive radiation sends out.. well.. Radiation, Which is incredibly unhealthy for living beings. It Damages your skin, organs, and even your DNA itself.
The largest known bomb was 100 Megatons and it would leave a crater 1 KM in radius. with structure damage occurring up to 90 KM away.
(this is also how nuclear power plants work. But instead of going kablooey they use that energy to boil water.)
