FLASH WARNING ‼️‼️‼️‼️
Actually finished a lethan edit for once. Who would’ve thought?
Anyways this is my peace offering to capcom, please let them meet. (Also I know the intro is awful, I’ll change it when I come up with something better 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭)
Every time I’m reminded that Ethan Winters died at the ripe old age of 37 I feel a little sick to my stomach
who are you?
There's some media where I don't ever feel like writing fic for it because it's perfect as it is and has said everything that needed to be said. For example, Whiplash by Damien Chazelle is my favorite movie ever but even with the dynamic between Fletcher and Andrew being right up my alley I have no desire or intention to write for it. Or even read fic of it. It's a perfectly told and encapsulated story.
I feel this and I think Fletcher and Andrew’s dynamic is so difficult to portray that it often feels weird reading or writing outside of the movie. It’s interesting because I think the movie does a great job creating a sort of vacuum, but then again there’s so much it leaves out that could be expanded on: the Spring semester, Andrew’s testimony, his time meandering after giving up drums, and of course the post-Carnegie trajectory.

Actually, one of my favorite parts about Whiplash's ending is how the two shots of Andrew and Fletcher staring at one another serves as the perfect summary for their relationship throughout the whole movie (and for abusive relationships in general).
We see Andrew's face clear as day in frame smiling above at Fletcher. Meanwhile, Fletcher's mouth is not in view, thus not allowing the audience to see him smile back at Andrew. All we can see is his terrifying glare as he stares at Andrew at eye level.
This visual is the perfect metaphor for their abusive relationship, as Andrew’s dad (and the audience) cannot understand why Andrew would want the approval of someone like…well…Fletcher, as all he (and the audience) can see is Fletchers scary intimidating eyes/glare (AKA the abuse Fletcher inflicts on his students). Andrew can also see Fletcher's intimidating glare, but unlike the audience, he can also see Fletcher's smile.
Being his primary target, he (along with his dad/the audience) is familiar with the abuse Fletcher inflicts, and how it changes the lives his victims. However, unlike the audience, Andrew can see the "good" that Fletcher can invoke in him (the "good" being that Fletcher is the only person who gets his snobbish passion, and is thus the only person who can "give him feedback"). He can see his glare (his flaws) like we can, but he's also too focused on Fletchers smile/approval to be completely put off guard from Fletcher's stare.
I also think it helps that Fletchers glare is at eye level at Andrew, as it sells to Andrew the idea of "finally making it", because throughout the whole movie, Fletcher is metaphorically/literally looking down at Andrew. So for Fletcher to finally view him as an "equal" while praising his playing is enough pull Andrew back into his twisted world.

Fletcher 100% only played at that club for Andrew to one day waltz in curious
It was NOT a coincidence that he was somehow playing near his NEW apartment 😭😭🙏
I find it interesting that, as people discuss the parallels' between Whiplash and Black Swan, no one pointed out how both movies indirectly invert the protagonists chosen artform to be more like the other movie.
For context, ballet is usually considered one of the hardest, strictest dance forms due to requiring a lot of flexibility and exact technique, often leaving dancers prone to injuries/emotional stress due to the pressure for exactness. On the other hand, historically speaking, jazz is supposed to be more freeform, fun, and loose. That's not to say jazz isn't difficult or doesn't require any basic structure, but more so that jazz requires spunk to allow the improvisation inherit to the genre to occur.
However, in Black Swan, Nina's instructor begs her to let loose and to not be so stiff when it comes to her dancing despite how choregraphed ballet has to be. Meanwhile, Fletcher bullies Andrew into believing his drum playing isn't "good enough" even when it reflects the spontaneity needed in jazz.
But because of their instructors methods of "improvement" Andrew becomes mechanical (as mentioned in the script) in his jazz performance (talented and amazing, yes, but without his soul) almost as if he's using ballet methods to play jazz, all while Nina's dancing turns erratic and spontaneous.
