On January 11, 2013, the body of Kendrick Johnson was found inside a rolled-up, upright gym mat with his head facing the floor by several other students at his Georgia high school. Beneath his head lay a pool of his own blood. The initial autopsy concluded that he died of positional asphyxia from hanging upside down in the mat. Students told investigators that it was common for them to store their shoes under the rolled-up mats during gym class, and hypothesized that Kendrick had gotten stuck while he was trying to retrieve his shoes. Kendrick’s parents, unsatisfied with the autopsy results, hired a private pathologist to reinvestigate Kendrick’s death. The pathologist concluded that Kendrick died of blunt force trauma to the head, not suffocation. A second autopsy was conducted on Kendrick after his funeral and it was found that all of his organs had been removed and replaced with newspapers. The funeral owner said they never received the organs from the coroner. When the coroner was asked where the organs were, he stated that they had already been ‘’discarded’’. Surveillance footage also shows Kendrick entering the gym, but no one entering before him, and hours of the tape footage were also missing around the time of his death, making it widely suspected that Kendrick’s death was a cover-up.
