@creekfiend was very kind in sharing some writing resources with me, and I thought I'd pass along the kindness by listing them down below.
N.K. Jemisin's article 'Describing characters of color in writing'
Mary Anne Mohanraj's article on approaching characters of colour
Renee Harleston's article How to 'Write Characters of Color Without Using Stereotypes'
Working with Colour, a resource site for writers
the book Writing the Other by by Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward, which had a description that cut deep, because I've definitely fallen into this trap out of fear:
and then a video recommended by @sheprd (thank you!) about pitfalls in descriptive language
if anyone else has more resources to add, feel free to reblog with them! this is something I want to learn more about.
I was talking yesterday about how I should probably change the skin colour of a character in a not-yet-written book, because that character is a large, aggressive dragon-shifter and I was worried about her being read with unintentional and offensive subtext.
I haven't gotten my hands on Writing the Other yet (it's still in the mail!) but from reading my way through these articles and watching the Princess Weekes video, I now understand that 'white-ifying' a character you're worried about is a lazy and cowardly solution. so, if I do ever finish the book Eres loses Everything, I'll keep her as is, do my best to be thoughtful, and hire a sensitivity reader to pick out any blind spots.
thank you to everyone who passed on resources, I really appreciate it!
here are a few more resources I've found, if anyone’s interested:
Writing Diversely FAQ
Writing With Colour blog
A conversation between many writers on writing diverse characters
Four Tips to Help You Incorporate Diversity and Inclusion in Your Writing
A Medium Article: "Yes, You Should Be Afraid to Write “Diverse” Characters"
adding another resource to the list! the website WritingTheOther.com is a treasure trove of articles, videos and podcasts, with online classes available.

It's her fault the secret boss is so hard.
Please stop praying for my cat y'all, the Lightners can't beat her she's too powerful.
The rose imagery in Chapter 4 was never about Noelle.
Kris is the rose, and leaving a thorn in Noelle shattered them.
The changed version isn't just lines. it's shattered glass. This isn't just Kris being shattered, it's the prophecy and Noelle's worldview being shattered too.
And while I'm at it, let's remember someone else who was said to have been "shattered".
I love these freaks so much
What are your thoughts on YTP as an art form? Do you consider it a technique, a genre of something else, or its own thing? What does it mean to you?
As a media studies guy and lifelong YTP fan, I often think about what YTP means to me as a form of expression and its place in wider culture. If you have any insights on that topic which you'd like to share, I would love to hear them.
It's really not much different than any other form of meme editing people do, it's just done primarily through audio/video and happens to have a name. I think of it as a language like the language of film or the language of music. Not everyone is fluent but if you make things a certain way, use certain techniques, fill your work with certain appeals, etc. then your intentions are understood.
i had a nightmare last night madonna lady gaga (all one person in this dream like a fusion) released a single called “PUNANI” and it the music video was just her squatting in different places across the world with the exact same framing with no underwear, with everything shown but the like. inside labia part was painstakingly and specifically censored with huge white lines. but the clitoris and holes and everything were perfectly visible and the video was playing on all TV’s constantly during the olympics. i was on a date with a guy i like and it turned on in the restaurant and the lyrics were like “infected punani sweet punani sour punani” just listing different adjectives some of which were really disgusting or medically concerning and i was like Hey man can you turn this off? and the waiter did but then like. later in the dream (we were walking around in hollywood and holding hands) the song came on again and i had to pretend to think it’s fine to not come off like. a prude.
the thing is PUNANI (2021) by madonna lady gaga was an extremely minor part of the dream. the main thing was i was trying to take the guy around town but there was a Blackwater type independent contractor army protecting almost every store and would point guns at us and they were also wh*te supr*macists and would make comments about us as we walked along. punani was just like. completely unquestioned in-universe lore. that ther song was released and everyone was ok with it
the song itself kind of sounded like technologic by daft punk
Twitter has had a days long discussion about things they like about dark souls 2 stemming from this post so here's some highlights

be open and involved in what you’re passionate about. be curious about other people and what they’re up to in a way that is not foundationally self serving. actively step out of your comfort zone and say yes to more things. do the stuff that you’re afraid of failing at. start any project. play an MMO and socialize. and many more ways not listed.
this is crazy btw. i think the um "they're BASICALLY siblings (have never met each other in their current lives)" crowd are going to have a bad time here
This is not to say that people can't or shouldn't ship these two, but I have a different interpretation. In this interaction they're seeing each other as their original, pre-boring selves from before their world got rewritten.
For Fionna, seeing Fennel like this evokes her desire for adventure and her old magical world, something that's been central to her arc since the beginning of the series and was alluded to last episode with her dream about Fionna trapped inside her reflection. When Fionna sees Fennel – a mirror-image of herself – briefly become magic again, she's seeing what she's been wanting since episode 1.
Fennel is experiencing much the same thing, but perhaps tinted with the potentially toxic jealousy which was a trait of Fern's. As she says to Fionna in this episode, Fennel deeply admires Fionna. If Fennel is anything like Fern, she might wish that she WAS Fionna. So when she sees Fionna, in her original form, she's looking at the person she wants to be.
That's just my analysis though, we'll see how this plays out in the rest of the show. For now, I'm glad Fionna has a new friend :)
