I haven't actually said too much about my research on this blog, but if more people are interested I can write a bit about it. The basic object we are studying are rational cuspidal curves in the complex projective plane, which you can think of as the solution set of a polynomial of two variables (something like xy^2 + x^2 + 2 = 0).

We are using techniques which come out of symplectic geometry and low dimensional topology to study what happens when you resolve the singularities of the curve by "blowing it up".

Day to day our work is mostly running computations. Currently I am organizing a computing cluster to help scale up our work.

With some of the comments this post has been getting I feel that I should clarify:

Yes doing exercises is very important and in some sense the whole point of reading a math textbook.

Doing inline exercises when you go to reference a theorem for another problem is frustrating and venting that frustration is (if maybe not constructive) cathartic and sometimes warranted.

Both of these things can be true at the same time. Struggling through textbooks is important, math is not a spectator sport. Happy studying :)
