The story of a date, a creep, and a barâs truly heroic staff
http://www.discordcomics.com/minoritymonsters/04-lucie-decline/
I like to think she wears a jumper because a bakery is the only place warm enough for her demonic skin.
Vote for the next one!

Happy asexuality awareness week!Â
Lucie Decline is one of the most popular monsters (according to tumblr) in the minority monsterâs series. If you want to see her in an actual real life book you can support the kickstarter for it here:Â

AU where people age until they reach 18 and then stop aging until they meet their soul mate so they can grow old together.
iâd never die
but imagine already being in a relationship at 18 and then at 22 youâre both sitting there looking at each other and realizing that you both havenât aged a day
imagine platonically moving in with ur best friend at 18 and then realizing a few years later that youâve been aging together
imagine purposely never finding your soul mate so you can reign eternal
holy shit i think we may have stumbled upon the greatest romance/adventure concept ever
What if you killed your soul mate so youâd make sure you never aged.
This just makes me really want a story where the main antagonist is someone who has been killing their soulmate for centuries whenever they find them, and the main protagonist is the newly re-incarnated version of their soulmate
okay but you guys dont realize the potential.
imagine meeting a handsome young man whoâs seen as a player and sleeps around a lot and you notice a scar along his arm and ask where he got it. he just look down at his feet and said âi used to be a soldier in world war oneâ. Heâs been sleeping around and hooking up so much cause heâs been trying to find his soulmate for years but hasnât yet.
Imagine going on your first date with someone and you really hit it off and then the next day you notice a grey hair and call them on the phone excitedly screaming and they both just sit on the phone hysterically crying and laughing.
Imagine sitting in silence with your partner and having them say out of the blue âi feel so old when im around you⌠but⌠in a good wayâ and thats the moment you know that they love you.
imagine having a dog thats 18 in human years and it starts to get gray patches of fur because they loves you so much.
imagine noticing you look older and freaking out but then stopping and getting super confused because âim not dating anyone right nowâŚ. which of my friends is my soulmate⌠WHICH ONE IS IT!?!?!?â and then they hopelessly date everyone they know in order to find out which one it fucking was. it was the pizza delivery guy the whole time. they went on 27 dates that all ended in confusion and heartbreak and it was the god damn pizza delivery guy from a month ago the whole fucking time.Â
imagine someone dating their partner for 5 years and then having an affair. only after the affair do they start aging.
imagine nuns who start to age after they ceremoniously âmarry godâ
imagine people getting surgeries to look older cause they dont want people to think theyre alone.
imagine having parents who wont let you date anyone but they start to notice you aging and then you have to have a terrifying âsurprise im gay and i have a boyfriend haha oopsâ conversation
imagine seeing couples with teenage kids and the couple both looks 18.
i could go on for hours.
imagine immortal aromantics/asexuals
Ahaha guess who gets to be immortal lol aha
Iâve added this twice already but Iâm adding it a third time in case any of my followers havenât seen it yet.(Iâm rly proud of it)
Okay but also
Age based laws like drinking age and senior citizen discounts would be fucked. âIâm sorry sir you have to be at least 21 to drinkâ âIâM THREE HUNDRED AND TWENTY ONE I PROBABLY HAVE WHISKY THATâS OLDER THAN YOUâ âSir, itâs the lawâ âWHEN I WAS TWENTY ONE THEY DIDNâT HAVE STUPID LAWS LIKE THISâ b/c this stuff is based on physical age not time lived.
The age hierarchy would disintegrate. âDonât tell me what to do what are you like 12âł âI was doing this while you were in nappies shut up and listenâ
Aromantic ppl would be like royalty or something by virtue of outliving literally everyone else. âWow you speak a lot of languagesâ âOfc I do Iâve been learning since 1131 A.D.â
How do linguistics and clothing and etiquette and culture evolve, when people are still lingering from the year the waltz became popular? History lessons from people who were there. English lessons from someone who saw the original Shakespeare performances and talks like theyâre from straight out of one of the plays. Latin lessons from someone who gets all snobby about French and Italian being bastardizations.
What happens to people whose soulmates die before meeting them? Eternal life or aging alone? Â Does their soulmate reincarnate? Letâs go with that second one.
What are generations? Your momâs best friend from childhood is your age. Your mom is middle aged. Or, weirder, your mom got knocked up outside a soul-bond and now, eighteen years later, you are physically the same age. Then you meet your soulmate and are ten years older than your mother.
Family trees are a wreck. Your brotherâs husbandâs nephew and your sisterâs great-great-great grandchild are the same age and turn out to be soulmates. At the wedding, you are 18 and your brother is 46 and your sister is long dead. Youâve married outside your soulbond twice. The marriages lasted 21 and 43 years respectively. Only your first partner has started aging now, half a century after your divorce.
Youâre 16 and an 18-year-old is flirting with you. Is he two years older or twenty?
U.S. Government paying reparations today to the still-living victims of American atrocities, to the slaves freed after the Civil War and to Cherokee who survived the Trail of Tears and to the Japanese Americans who were put in Internment Camps. Slaves having been freed after a century of enslavement b/c their owners prevented them from ever meeting their soulmate and thus kept them in perpetual young adulthood. Survivors who will take no shit because they were there and they know exactly what happened.
Doctors having to get a new degree after set amounts of time b/c STOP USING LEECHES TO BALANCE THE FOUR HUMORS MEDICAL SCIENCE HAS ADVANCED BEYOND THAT.
Trans ppl being born in the 1700s and wanting to transition and not being able to the way they are today and living long enough for HRT to be developed.
Poly ppl meeting one partner, aging for a year, and then stopping again like wtf??? And getting three more partners before the aging starts and doesnât stop. Living eighty years as 21 year olds waiting for one more person.
okay but imagine people starting to age once they discover their true passion like maybe thereâs an aro/ace kid who isnât in love with people, but takes up music or pottery or knitting and falls in love instantly because even if itâs not romantic, itâs still love, right?
this is also a good time to mention that soulmates are not necessarily romantic
For the first time since 1941, anthrax has hit Western Siberia, with 1,500 reindeer dying and 13 Yamal nomads being hospitalized including 4 children.
This is because unusually high temperatures (itâs 10 degrees Fahrenheit higher than normal) have melted permafrost containing the corpse of a reindeer that died of the bacteria 75 years ago.
Anthrax goes dormant when frozen, turning into a spore that reanimates when the temperature rises. Scientists estimate it can survive in this state for a minimum of 100 years.
In Siberia, dozens of herders have been relocated, a quarantine is in place and a state of emergency has been declared by the mayor.
This renews concerns that ancient viruses and bacteria could once again pose a threat, as the earth warms.
In 2014 scientists discovered that a Siberian virus, pithovirus sibericum, which lay dormant in permafrost for 30,000 years, became infectious again once thawed.
The article: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2016/07/28/anthrax-sickens-13-in-western-siberia-and-a-thawed-out-reindeer-corpse-may-be-to-blame/
this is not a consequence of global warming i had ever envisioned but now itâs the scariest thing iâve ever heard
Deadpool and the suicide prevention PSA
Hopefully everyone has gotten a chance to get a copy of Deadpool (2015-)Â #20 by now.Â
Obviously, trigger warnings for suicide
So, Deadpool #20 is a standalone issue that specifically targets the issue of suicide and weâre going to jump right to the ending to start off with: the writerâs, Gerry Duggan, message
I donât actually think itâs outlandish to try to do a helpful story about suicide prevention with Deadpool as the protagonist. Like Duggan said, it wouldnât be the easiest story to write, but it makes sense in an odd way. Deadpool is probably the most suicidal character ever if only because he is immortal and yet is constantly trying to kill himself and lets people murder him when itâs easier than fighting.
Itâs also coincidentally the right time for this type of story with this type of character.
If this story came out in the 90s when Deadpool first debuted I donât think it would be well received. The bro fans would complain about it being an afterschool special and people in general with think itâs in bad taste for character like Deadpool to be in a PSA like this, thatâs Supermanâs job (which weâll get to in a second)
That was a Generation X audience; very disenfranchised, cynical and very angry about it.
This is a millennial audience, very disenfranchised, cynical and resigned to it all.
Itâs an unarguable fact that the Baby Boomers are the worst generation ever and so when Generation X came along and got the shit end of their decadence and eventual complacency about civil rights they were understandably angry. Even grunge was pretty angry; you would sing with melancholy âIâm a loser baby, so why donât you kill meâ but this was underlined by rebellion. It was the clapback to the failed âgive peace a chanceâ
Fuck you and your bigoted warmongering capitalism. Iâm out, Iâm done so why donât you kill me?
Generation X is the exhausted end of this anger and is clearly exhibited by meme culture. Fuck you, everythingâs a joke, how the hell are we can it dig ourselves out of this pit? Might as well kill myself ¯\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
Anger and aggression has become the joke. Celebrities are reading âmean commentsâ on Jimmy Kimmel that say things like âfight me, you piece of shitâ and donât understand that that means âIâm a really big fan of yours and am probably sexually attracted to youâ
So why is a character created out of this angry high adrenaline culture the best one to speak to an exasperated culture that mocks angry high adrenaline?
Because he isnât condescending.
You want to kill yourself? So does everybody else but thereâs a lot of stuff on Netflix we still need to get to so letâs try to make the best of it.
Deadpool isnât a happy person telling sad people to cheer up.
Arguably the most popular/cited superhero comic about suicide prevention was made for Generation X audience in 2006âs All-Star Superman #10
It was effective for a lot of people and pleasantly regarded by the general public but some people didnât like it.
Iâm obviously arguing that if this were to come out now the majority of people wouldnât like it.
This girl is a complete stereotype. She could easily be the poster girl for the ârebelliousâ trope.
You can totally tell sheâs depressed because look how dark her clothes are.
And then Superman comes along knowing fuck all about her giving her a shallow complement based on absolutely nothing and then hugs her.
He tells her itâs not that bad.
It is bad.
Things are really bad.
I think Deadpool #20 is better even if it only conveys camaraderie in the badness.
The cover alone conveys that
Deadpool sees a girl, conventionally attractive but within ordinary aesthetic, about to jump to her death
He jokes about it in a very deadpan and abysmal millennial way. Much like Superman, Deadpool knows nothing about this girl but he doesnât condescend to her
Heâs not the right guy for the job
He doesnât know her or have any stake in her well-being
He doesnât belittle her decision but implores her to give it a little time
What does Deadpool know best? Showtunes and beating people up so he does what he knows best and the distraction gives her the ability to feel and just do something, anything
Then what? He still doesnât know what the right thing to do or say is. There is no right thing to do or say. He gives for the resources to talk to people that have at least been trying to figure out the best way to help in this situation longer than he has
He doesnât force her to use these resources and he offers to go with her as an equal
As a few people pointed out, going into inpatient care is not fun, nor is any other option. The problems are numerous and frightening but we have to make do until we can build better systems, but thatâs not really the point of the comic. Itâs how to handle these things in the current system and when you have no idea what to do. Whether it was because the Deadpool team got consultants on the issue of whether they lucked into it I believe they nailed it.
Itâs not an comic that will prevent someone from committing suicide, in my opinion, but itâs an comic that will help people know how to better react to their loved ones who are suicidal.
Weâve discussed suicide extensively on this blog from many angles and the consensus has always been that what helps is when people donât condescend to you, donât just tell you to feel better, donât invalidate your right to do what you want with your body. What helps is being there, as an equal, to consider the decision further.
You may want to kill yourself and you have the right to do that but remember that you donât have to do it right now. You will still have the option tomorrow or the day after. It is a huge and final decision and you need to consider it as clearheaded as possible. Do something fun or mundane and just distracting to get you through the next few minutes or hours and then explore all your options.
A suicide hotline might not work for you, nor will a hospital but they are options that are not permanent. You can try them. If suicide is really the right decision for you it will still be an option after you explore these avenues.
Remember, you can always make the decision tomorrow. Give today a chance.
A âSupermanâ giving you a hug might make you feel better for an hour, but a âDeadpoolâ respecting you enough to find out why you went up onto that roof in the first place is whatâs going to make the real difference.
WHAT COLOR ARE MIRRORS
letâs reflect on this
fun fact! mirrors reflect each color equally, except for green. if you have ever seen a mirror perfectly aligned in front of another mirror, a.k.a. an infinite mirror, you can look through it and see that it becomes greener and greener. therefore, mirrors are technically green!
holy shit
The glass is greener over here. Not a typo.
If you look edgewise through a sheet of glass you see that itâs green because of iron impurities (Google for it). Reducing the iron reduces the green.
Perfectly aligning mirrors to multiply reflections also multiplies the apparent thickness of the glass, and the green tint becomes more apparent the âdeeperâ each reflection seems to be.
Science is like history: it was never this interesting at school. :-)
Yep! And this is because - Iâm sorry to say - mirrors are not a unique or separate substance with magical properties. Mirrors are silvered glass. They have two colors: the color of the silver, and the color of the glass. The âsilverâ doesnât have to be silver, though it usually is because mirrors are traditionally made with silver nitrate, because itâs a whitish metal. You can have mirrors silvered in gold or black or red. You take literally any piece of glass, pour a coating of silver on it, seal it, and call it a mirror.
You have to seal it because otherwise it tarnishes and spots. Even though the glass protects it from air, the silver oxidizes just like any other silver, which is why antique mirrors have that funky age-spotted look.
Mirrors used in science are usually pure clear glass with no impurities (so the glass has no color) and are silvered in gold or aluminum, so they are white or gold. A warm-toned mirror would have a pink glass and would make things have a rose-gold look. Phryne Fisher, in the books, has a mirror with pink glass.
(Mirrors silvered in silver - that is, most mirrors youâve seen - are probably faintly grey from the silver and faintly green from the cheap glass, but it doesnât need to concern you at all - even if you noticed a strong color, youâre often so used to looking in them that your brain edits out any discrepancy - like how your nose doesnât get in the way of your vision even though itâs right in front of your eyes all of the time.)
My grandmother had a mirror that was silvered in gold. It was a little disconcerting. The silver in mirrors is why vampires donât have reflections. (And why the cutlery at Castle Dracula was made of gold.)
IS THAT TRUE ABOUT THE REFLECTIONS BECAUSE IF SO THAT CHANGES ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING???
omg and that totally makes sense for why they wouldnât appear on film either, wasnât silver used in that too???
So a Greek mythology headcanon where Aphrodite can appear either male or female, and she looks like a really fucking sexy guy to gay dudes because thatâs who they find attractive And some Greek bro is out with his buddies when she shows up and heâs all âWow look at how ripped this dude is no homoâ and his buddies are all âWhat the fuck man thatâs a beautiful ladyâ and thatâs how he finds out heâs hella gay
OMG you just opened a door to some amazing head canons How do you see Aphrodite if youâre ace, aro, Demi, pan, bi???
I bet if youâre bi/ pan, she shifts between genders.
If youâre ace, instead of looking super hot, she looks pretty ordinary, but still aesthetically pleasing, and she has a very kind face and a sweet voice and intelligent eyes. So, romantically appealing.
If youâre demi then she starts off at regular pretty level, but gets steadily hotter as you fall for her.
If youâre aro-ace, sheâs invisible (and it pisses her off SO MUCH but she canât do anything about it).
As an aro ace I strongly approve of this unique opportunity to piss off a Greek god without being murdered or getting turned into a tree or some shit
Reblogging for that last comment omg
I love how this explains a lifestyle that some people try to make us feel guilty about living. I wish more people were more understanding so I didnât feel like I was lying to friends and family. Although I know I donât have to explain to anyone other than my husband what plans I may have for an evening, when asked by someone what Iâm doing tonight, I feel guilty when I have to lie. I donât like feeling that way. Maybe I should have pamphlets made with this conversation on them to hand out to people! Just a thought! đ
I love this. Explains things in a perfect way. Donât you agree fireman6a4 ?
This shit is so fucking important to talk about.
My interwebz is down so I figured Iâd go ahead and post this up. Iâm really proud of this. For my Screen Design class, we had to take a fairytale and retell it in however we wanted in storyboard form. I chose the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Just as a heads-up, Iâve replaced the bears with Ursa Major/Ursa Minor, the constellation based on a bear.
I could always tell the story myself, but I figured I should let the art do the talking and only answer questions if youâre curious about it. The only hint Iâll give is to pay attention to the faces of the characters. ;D
This sucker took me 3 days to work on. Iâm dead, man. ;_;
no. you didnât justâŚÂ
NO IM NOT CRYING YOUâRE CRYING
No, Iâve just got something in my eye. Shut upâŚ
Holy crapskies, you did that in THREE days?! No wonder youâre dead. @_@
Imagine yourself.
You are 14. You want to try dating. You wouldnât want to date an 11 year old though, right? No, no way. You want someone your age!
At 15, an 11 year old is out of the question! Thatâs just silly. Even 12 is too littleâ you might even have a younger sibling that age. Gross!
At 16, would you date someone who is 13? (a middle schooler). You wouldnât, right? As a high schooler, 13 is just a baby.
This phenomenon is NOT lost on adults. Take it from someone who IS one. Â As an adult, anyone who is a teenager is a child to us. This is not meant to be condescending; adults see teenagers as people who have growing to do. People who are so much younger, immature even. Small like a younger sibling who needs protecting. If you are underage, and an adult tells you that they see you as an adult and are attracted to you because of it, THIS IS A LIE. They see you as a child. If an adult tells you that they see you, who is underage, as an adult, stay away. That person is attracted to children. That person is a pedophile.
i mean. itâs not hard to see. why do you think trump has been practically begging millennials to vote for bernie sanders? heâs tweeted it about fifty times. he brings it up at the debate. you think thatâs cause heâs looking out for you?
even bernie sanders is saying please, no, donât write me in, this is not the time for a protest vote. you gonna listen to trump instead of bernie? you gonna support bernie by ignoring everything he says?
nah, itâs because trump knows itâs his path to victory. donât fall for it. donât write-in. donât vote third-party. vote for hillary clinton
Do. Not. Split. The. Fucking. Vote.
You know, it occurred to me that the promise Kara makes to Mon-El is a direct result of Alexâs talk with Kara.
Because, no, I donât think Kara ever really did realize that Clark abandoned her. She never really understood it. She just accepted it as something that happened to her. It was Clarkâs decision to make and she never questioned it.
Until Alex pointed out that he could have picked differently.
That he could have chosen to keep Kara close. That the choices he made, for better or for worse, had a profound impact on how she grew up, how alone she felt and how she had to bury her feelings about Krypton to survive.
And even if she understands why Clark made the choices he made, with the best of intentions, Kara knows in her bones that had the roles been reversed, she would have never left Clark alone.
Right now, Kara is exactly the same age as Clark was when she arrived, in the same place in her life (at 24 having established themselves as superheroes). And she knows that had it been her decision, she wouldnât have left a 13 year old child who had just lost a planet with someone else (no matter how great), would have never left that child to grow up without a constant connection to Krypton. She wouldnât have even left him when SHE was the 13 year old kid. Kara was willing to take care of Baby!Kal when she had NOTHING.
And itâs only in Alex pointing this out, that she really starts examining and unpacking how she feels about this.
So when Kara tells Mon-El that she will be here for him so he never knows what itâs like to be alone? Sheâs talking to her younger self. Sheâs telling him what she wish she had heard.
This is Kara saying, âI will do better than Clark did for me. I will give better than what I got.â
Itâs kinda amazing that it took me this long to make that connection, and I almost wish the show had spelled it out just a little longer.
(thanks to @karadvnvers for making this gifset request.)
I love this meta and want to add that at 13, Kara felt that SHE was the one who abandoned Clark, not the other way around. She made a promise to protect him and raise him, and when she got to earth sheâd failed. I think Karaâs always felt that she owes Clark something and he owes her nothing, that heâs still a responsibility she failed to meet. It takes Alexâs help for her to look back now with an adult perspective and think, âI was a frightened child then, and he was a grown man. Maybe the responsibility went the other way?â
#we all have those moments right#itâs crazy to look back on your own life and finally be able to go âI was just a child thenâ#it takes practice
Absolutely. We all have these moments in our own lives, and for Kara, I think itâs even worse because itâs compounded by the topsy-turvy way time fucked with her life.
Karaâs last promise to her family, to her parents was âI will be the good older cousin, I will be the Head of the House of El and take care of him.â You have to imagine the amount of preparation, the speeches and advice of things to remember, memories to carry that Jor-El, Lara, Zor-El and Alura poured into her, thinking that sheâd be the only one left who had first hand knowledge of their planet, their culture, their family. The pressure young Kara must have been under to get her ready to become not just the Heir to the Great House of El, but the Keeper of Kryptonâs entire memory.
She was prepared to shoulder all of that weight before she stepped into the pod, and that doesnât go away just because the baby she took care of as a teenager is suddenly an adult who doesnât need her anymore.Â
In fact, it only underscores the wrongness of it all, because sheâs reminded that everything is upside down and her normal exploded along with Krypton. Every time Clark has to take care of her, a small part of her probably feels guilty about Kal growing up alone not knowing his heritage because as Kara says in the Reactron episode, âIt wasnât supposed to be this way.â She still remembers the baby she held in her arms, because it was a real memory, a part of world that doesnât exist anymore but was real to her, once upon a time, when Kryptonians couldnât fly and shoot lasers from their eyes, time was linear, and younger cousins never lapped you in age.
So yeah, I agree. She never saw Clark as someone who owed her something, because that isnât the person she remembers. She remembers Kal, not Clark, and it takes someone like Alex who has the history with Kara (who has seen into Karaâs deepest wishes and dream in the Black Mercy ep) to challenge that notion and get her to see that sure, on Krypton, he was the kid- but on EARTH, Kara was the child in this equation, and she deserved better.
I want one of those scenes in a dude bro film where âtomboyâ chick has to wear a dress to go undercover or whatever, but instead of the guys drooling as she walks down the stairs, theyâre like âk. U need to stop. Go put the cargo pants back on. You look super uncomfortable and awkward in that. Brutus, you go be the fake prostitute.â
Iâm just imagining this super ripped guy called Brutus being like âYESSS!!! IâVE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE THE FAKE PROSTITUTE!! Now is my time to shine!!â
so I got inspired⌠and had to make a comicâŚ.
*wipes away a single tear* Yes.
brutus needs more air time
It came back. :)
This scene still breaks my heart each and every single time I watch it.
Azula was a terrible, horrible person. She would have set the world aflame and laughed over the broken carcass of her brother.
But she was fourteen.
She was so ruined and twisted by her childhood and by her nation, driven to insanity by the expectations placed upon her.
Azula was bad and yet I canât help but feel so terribly sorry for her.
âI donât have sob stories like all of you.â
SHE WAS FUCKING FOURTEEN WHAT
âMy own motherâŚ.thought I was a monster. She was right, of course, but it still hurt.â
actually, i think one of the shows strengths is that they didnât shy away from what a horrible tragedy this was. even though she was clearly a villain and did unspeakably awful things, this scene was still framed as sad. there was no celebrating- they just look at her sadly.
the music for the battle that leads up to this moment is sad too- itâs an epic battle, visually probably one of the biggest things done in the entire series, and they could have played it with thumping, energetic, dangerous music. but instead itâs quiet and somber. because the whole scenario is heartbreaking, and they know it.
i think the fact that a kidâs show had so much respect for itâs viewers and their ability to understand the complexity of this situation is what makes avatar great.
Youâre in charge of assigning every child on Earth the monster under their bed. One child in particular has caused every monster assigned to him/her to quit. You decide to assign yourself.
Case: #273402 Status: Disastrous.
I stare at the file and realize I have no options, over the last 2 years every monster assigned to Charlotte Dower has quit, every last one. Her first monster; a giant goldfish-faced humanoid named Bubba, had been with her for four years, and then she wasnât scared of him anymore. After that it was a string of different common, uncommon, and rare monsters⌠I even assigned a sentient sock monster to her. He came back crying! I look on my tablet, only one assignable monster left; myself. Field work has never been my cup of tea, but desperate times call for desperate measures. So at 8:03 pm, after Mrs. Gideon tucks in Charlotte and her little brother Daniel; I slither into the space beneath Charlotteâs bed. Across the room underneath Danielâs crib is a rookie, Chico, a standard Creep kind of monster. I turn my attention to the bed above me, Charlotte is still awake but barely, I reach up over the bed and run an ice cold finger over her cheek, silence, so I do it again. âIâm not afraid of you monster!â She whispers, but her voice is shaking. I can see a small clock on the wall 8:14, a door somewhere in the house slams and there is an audible hitch of breath from above me. A few minutes go by I can hear Francis Gideon yelling at his wife. There are heavy footsteps on the stairs, and loud panting breaths, Charlotte scrambles off the bed and⌠She. CRAWLS. Under. The. Bed. With. Me. âMove. Over!â Charlotte hisses at me. I do. The door to the bedroom slams open and I smell the stench of human intoxicants before the man even steps inside. I know why Charlotte isnât afraid of any of my monsters; sheâs afraid of her own. Francis reaches a hand under the bed and I thrust my wrist into it, he starts to pull, I slither out. âWhat theâŚâ I cut Francisâs next words off by unfolding to my full 12 foot height. Looming over the drunken man I caress my cold fingers down his face. âIf you ever touch, scare, or harm my child again, I will find you, and I will do the same to you, for all eternity.â I promise to him. As Francis runs from the room he soils himself. I pull Charlotte from under the bed, tuck her back under her covers and kiss her forehead goodnight. âIâll be back tomorrow night, sleep well darling.â Charlotte Dower is my child, I am the monster under her bed.
WELL GODAMN, WE HAVE OURSELVES A WINNER
Holy shit Iâm gonna cry thatâs beautiful.
I learned about the murder of Kitty Genovese in two separate psychology classes, at two separate universities. It was studied as an example of the âbystander effectâ, which is a phenomenon that occurs when witnesses do not offer help to a victim when there are other people present.
I was told by my professors that Kitty Genovese was a 28-year-old unmarried woman who was attacked, raped, and brutally murdered on her way home from her shift as manager of a bar. I was told that numerous people witnessed the attack and her cries for help but didnât do anything because they âassumed someone else wouldâ. Nobody intervened until it was too late.Â
What I was not told was that Kitty Genovese was a lesbian who lived more or less openly with her partner in the Upper West Side and managed a gay bar.Â
Now⌠is it likely that people overheard Kittyâs cries for help and ignored them because they thought someone else would deal with it? Or, perhaps, did they ignore her because they knew she was a lesbian and just didnât care?
Maybe thatâs not the case. Maybe it was just a random attack. Maybe her neighbours didnât know she was gay, or didnât care.
But itâs a huge chunk of information to leave out about her in a supposedly scientific study of events, since her sexuality made her much more vulnerable to violent crimes than the average person. And itâs a dishonour to her memory.
RIP Kitty Genovese. Society may only remember you for how you died, but I will remember you for who who were.
this was one of the first lessons I had in psych too and we were never told about this either nor was it in any of the reading materials
I never knew this.
I also never knew this about Kitty Genovese, but I do know that, in fact, many of the dozen (not thirty-eight) people who witnessed some part of the attack (which took place after 3AM, on a chilly night in March when most peopleâs windows were closed) tried to help in some way.
One shouted out his window for the attacker to leave her alone, which did successfully scare the man off temporarily.
Another called the police but, seeing her still on her feet, said only that there had been a fight but the woman seemed to be okay.
And when Kitty Genovese was finally attacked in a vestibule where she couldnât be seen from outside, Karl Ross, a neighbor, saw what was happening but was too frightened himself to go to her rescueâso he started calling other neighbors to ask what he should do. Eventually one of them told him to call the police, which he did, and the woman he called, Sophie Farrar, rushed out to help Kitty even though she didnât know whether the attacker was gone.
Kitty Genovese died in the arms of a neighbor who tired to help and comfort her while they waited for the police and ambulance to arrive. Kitty was in fact still alive, although mortally wounded, when the ambulance reached the scene.
The man who saw the final stabbing? Who panicked and called other neighbors first instead of the police? The man who said, infamously, that he âdidnât want to get involvedâ because he was reluctant to turn to the police for help? He was thought to be gay himself. He was a friend of Kitty and Mary Annâs. After being interviewed by the police he took a bottle of vodka to Mary Ann and sat with her, trying to comfort her.
So, no. I donât think the evidence indicates that Kitty Genoveseâs neighbors let her die because she was a lesbian, because Kitty Genoveseâs neighbors tried to help.

(Also, going by the content of the murdererâs confession, it was indeed a random attack.)
how on EARTH was this âscientificallyâ studied but the details gotten so wrong and the wrong as hell conclusion published and taught in schools?!?!?! where were those scientists observation skills?! on vacation?!
How to take facts and turn them into an urban legend that gets taught in schools: Make a bad made-for-t.v.-movie about it, watch it, believe everything the movie says, annnnnnnd go! Thatâs how it gets taught as this supposed âscientific study.â Someone got fucking lazy.
Spread the real deal, kids.
