the more you sit on dmc, the more you realise how abysmal it is at storytelling effectively.

it’s insane how all the important information is in the novels. and even then, they still don’t tell us anything about Sparda. or Hell at all, really. it’s so difficult to know what has retconned and what hasn’t and if most of that is even correctly translated.

point in case, dmc is whatever the fuck you want it to be. Capcom doesn’t care about the story beyond making the games look cool, so it’s your freedom to do what you want with it.

it genuinely feels like there are two seperate dmcs. one is the main instalments. just the games. no extra information; which attracts a fandom mostly just interested in powerscaling and how much of an Alpha Male both DV are. alongside that is people who are only there for the attractive characters and don’t care for lore at all, which is fine, i’m not dunking on that.

and then, there is the second way to view dmc, which feels almost entirely seperate from the games. the novels, mountains of extra lore, VoV, DF, Before the Nightmare, dmc1 novel, dmc3 novels, the existence of Gilver and Grue and Beryl and who Nell really is beyond a vague reference in dmc5 that you won’t understand unless you’ve read this shit. which attracts a seperate fandom who argue about lore like there’s no tomorrow and treat knowing about Dante’s sexual assault like it’s a gotcha moment for being more in the know.

again, not dunking on anyone, i just have never been in such a divisive fandom with wildly different demographics and such insistence on characters being the pinnacle of Male Masculinity (Vergil. despite the fact that Vergil is a fucking warning against toxic masculinity. which again, you’re less likely to pick up on unless you’ve read all the extra source material. hence the dudebros and mass amounts of memes that are just blatantly incorrect.)

dmc is fun, but it’s hard to tell whether Capcom love it or hate it.

all we’re getting are fan translations that are probably not accurate at all by leaving information out on purpose or just changing it entirely (apparently the deadly fortune translation left out lady’s hinted feelings for dante????)

Hypothetically, if they ever do some super ultra golden edition with all the games, there should be an unlockable where after you beat a DMC game (depending on which game it is) you get a free, virtual novel to read like what SDR2 did with Danganronpa IF:
