I think it really depends on the story you're trying to tell.
I don't really like writing smut in general (I guess I don't mind reading it sometimes but I tend to focus more on actual plot and character rather than mindless smex scenes... I'm not a prude by any means but the smex has to have a reason for existing in order for me enjoy it). Depends on the character and the situation. Like in your case, Mike & Sulley smut is a huge turn off for you. I don't know if I would say it's a ''turn off'' for me, but it has to stay in character in order for it to work.
I get the ''ick'' factor if the characters seem so sweet and innocent vanilla malt-drinking Apple Pie Walgreens Wholesome.
I've written plenty of romantic fluffy scenes between them, nothing too explicit, but I like scenarios between them in a shipping sense, if not necessarily a NSFW sense. Idk... kissing and cuddling is cute, right?

I guess I can understand though why some people find this ''ick''. Mike, in particular, is presented as an innocent Man Child. Now I'm not going to say that Mike should be infantilized. But he is clearly ''innocent'' in stark contrast to Randall... Randall is loaded with a deeply sensual, magnetic raw and lethal genius (which I don't think it was PIXAR's intent, but that's why so many people simp for this freak, myself included... he became the unexpected Fandom Sex Symbolā¢ .) Like........ look at the way he corners Mike in the hallway during his interrogation... what are we even doing here? š¤£ But in all seriousness, Mike is so obviously emotionally vulnerable, which is why he was such an easy target to be intimidated and overpowered by Randall in the actual movie.
Stolen from the BuzzFeed article. I don't agree with the last sentence obviously, because I can't understand how anyone can dislike Randall but whateves. But I do agree with their observation about Mike's innocence in this scene which is why it works so well. This scene wouldn't have worked as well with Sulley. Sulley wouldn't have fallen for Randall's trap as easily as Mike. Randall knows he can easily overpower Mike--physically and mentally--because he looks down on Mike and lowkey talks down to him like a child.
As far as Mike being in NSFW type fics... Idk... I'm on the fence about it. Depends if it's done right.
I've read fics where Randall and Mike are locked in a power struggle where Randall abuses, manipulates, and controls Mike which is technically canon if we base their sole interactions on the scene above... but yeah I guess it makes sense for Randall to be presented in more kinky situations. But like I said, I've read fics (even doujinshi) where Randall is seducing Mike or intimidating him into these kinds of sexual situations against his will and it kind of works. It's meant to make the reader uncomfortable, which it does.... because Mike is so naive compared to street-smart Randall. That's what made Mike's torture scene so uncomfortable to watch (at least for me).
(A lot of people joke about how unintentionally homoerotic this scene is, but Idk... y'all kind of on to something. xd
The Japanese fanbase is SUPER into this, Idk... there's a lot of NSFW Mike x Randall doujin out there using the torture scenario.
Sadly enough this is the only way this ship can work.... but I hate seeing Mike being tortured even if it is technically canon.)
As far as Sulley goes, his character is way more wholesome in the first movie. In University, I can see him being a slut, ngl.
