Food for thought: Here’s my (kind of short, half-assed) take on Waternoose and Randall’s relationship…. (I might make a more detailed post later but this was keeping me up at night no joke).
We didn’t see much of them together in the first movie, naturally, because they were trying to hide the fact that these two were even working together…the whole relationship between them was vague, so this is all theory based on context clues.
It’s always been a personal hc of mine that Randall used to be Waternoose’s favorite… theboggskids posted that it is mentioned in the book Meet the Monsters! that Waternoose was Randall’s mentor, and I think if they had this backstory in the movie, his jealousy of Sulley would have made so much more sense.
Like, if Waternoose mentored Randall and took him under his wing after he graduated college, and taught Randall everything he knows about Scaring, and was someone Randall might’ve looked up to at one point, in a healthy, normal, teacher-student relationship, this would’ve made A LOT more sense about why Randall was so bitter and envious of Sulley—because honestly, it’s pretty much established in the movie that Randall is one of the best Scarers at the company. Like, second place isn’t *that* bad. Why isn’t he satisfied? But Randall isn’t the type to settle for less. He always wants the best of the best. He wants to be the cream of the crop. He always wants more, he’s a social climber and he’s constantly looking for opportunities to increase his status in society and get ahead…. and second place in his mind will never be good enough…
This villain origin story is so Randall coded, honestly…
(I swear, someone should do cross over art of Randall in the ‘’X’’ horror franchise, but Pearl (2022) would really fit his character arc…
….like tell me this is something Randall wouldn’t do to Johnny, cuz like… yeah no ,why would this actually happen? 😭
In my Randall Boggs fanfiction, I actually do have Randall plot revenge against Johnny at the end of ACT V because like… the whole ‘’Johnny and me were besties’’ in MAW just made NO fucking sense… like… I know the fandom will hate for me this and I do LOVE Johnny, don’t get me wrong, but Randall would totally m*rder his ass in cold blood if the opportunity presented itself…)
But back to the movie. Now, we see this scene in the beginning of the movie with Mr. Waternoose personally congratulating Sulley… and you do get this vibe from Waternoose that he views his employees as ‘’children’’—like Daddy Warbucks over here is somewhat of a father figure to these guys and gals. (and they fist bumped too??? Bitch that's going too far...)
Of course, we knew very little about Waternoose’s personal life when this movie first came out (it’s later established in Monsters at Work) that he has a son that he’s estranged from, which makes a lot of sense. Apart from that, we know next to nothing about his family… what happened to his wife, Wendy, for instance (if she’s dead or they just separated), or whether he’s a good husband or father or not (we do get brief clues from his son Roger Rogers that he didn’t ‘’get much hugs in his childhood’’ so we can assume Waternoose was probably married to his work and cared more about his employees than he did his own flesh and blood).
But that’s just theory… it hasn’t been confirmed… and Idk if we’re going to get more backstory on Waternoose in MAW, if they ever decide to make a Season 3. I personally would love to see more of Roger Rogers and his relationship to his dad, but I don’t think Waternoose is going to make a major appearance again apart from being briefly mentioned, mainly because of James Coburn having passed away only a year after Monsters, Inc. came out.
They did actually recast the part in Monsters University, and were planning on showing a brief cameo at the end of the movie, but at the last minute, they decided not to give Waternoose a speaking part and just gave us this picture montage instead… mainly to honor James Coburn’s memory.
(FYI if you guys are into classic movies, y’all should check out some of Coburn’s filmography, he was a pretty badass character actor who mainly did war pictures, gangster flicks, and Westerns… one of my favorites he did is a romantic comedy WWII movie called The Americanization of Emily (1964), co-starring Julie Andrews. His part is surprisingly comical in this movie.
He’s also pretty badass in the movie Charade (1963) with Audrey Hepburn. And he has one of the most graphic on-screen deaths in any early 60s movie I’ve ever seen…. It’s so disturbing, I can’t even post a picture.)
So, I doubt we’re going to see Waternoose appear in the franchise beyond just pictures and being mentioned in respect of James Coburn ***a literal Old Hollywood Legend***… but part of me wants to see Waternoose make a comeback, Idk… I think he’s an incredibly interesting character that probably has a whole backstory waiting to be written. (I feel like a minority in the fandom, because most fans absolutely abhor him… like he’s a terrible person, yes, but he is a good villain… and I’d like to see more of him.)
Part of me would’ve liked to see more of the relationship between him and Randall, too. So going back to this scene real quick of Waternoose commending Sulley and giving him his flowers… this scene establishes exactly WHY Randall is so resentful of Sulley.
It’s not just being the runner-up to Sulley—who’s the Rockstar of the power plant. It’s literally Waternoose singing Sulley’s praises and completely, intentionally shutting Randall out of that same praise. Waternoose doesn’t treat Sulley and Randall as equals. Waternoose is clearly placing Sulley on a pedestal here… you see that even when Randall temporarily breaks Sulley’s record and gets his five minutes of fame….
….Waternoose doesn’t even bother to come over and shake his hand and rave about him like you would expect. Like he does it on purpose or something.
But Sulley does what he always does best—like it’s no news flash on the Scare Floor by now, if Sulley beats Randall by a couple 100+ something points…
…and yet, Waternoose comes over and acts like Sulley is the best thing since peanut butter, like ‘’Gee, haven’t seen THAT before’’… and even though Randall is a petty, shallow, self-absorbed asshole, you have to somewhat sympathize a little with Randall here (not that I think Randall is a ‘’misunderstood’’ villain who deserves to be coddled and victimized… I mean he is one Bad Bunny, he is pure motherfucking evil, but you kind of understand where he’s coming from)… like he’s not an underdog in the pure sense of the word (not like Mike in MU, anyway, he doesn’t necessarily have to prove himself, because he’s clearly a natural-born Scarer and he has all the makings of a Superstar)... Randall is not a bad Scarer and the people on the floor *do* recognize that he’s undeniably talented and they *do* give notice to his accomplishments (even tho he’s a piece of shit…. I’m sorry I’m so harsh, I LOVE Randall, but he is deeply flawed, let’s not pretend he’s a saint)…
But Randall seems to be trying to make it to First Place for more than just himself… I mean, you have to wonder, is he trying to impress Waternoose? Or he just wants to rub his Sweet Victory in Sulley’s face? Or both? Because he will NEVER be good enough no matter what he does (according to Waternoose.... Sulley will ALWAYS be twice the Scarer he will ever be. OUCH).
At this point in the story, Randall and Waternoose are shown much later of course that they do have a strained relationship… Randall clearly has a lack of respect for authority…. He isn’t building the Scream Extractor to impress Waternoose. He’s doing it for his personal gain—to ‘’revolutionize the Scaring Industry’’ so that he can finally be running the show instead of just being a mere Scarer… he wants to be sitting in the driver’s seat and have the Scarers work for him… instead of always playing second fiddle to the ‘’the great James P. Sullivan’’ (the way Randall uses Mike and Sulley’s names like they’re slurs 💀)…
But it does make you wonder, too, if there was a point in time that Randall may have actually respected Waternoose and wanted to work for him. I find it hard to believe that Randall would work for this company and this Fat Cat billionaire for 20 fucking years if he wasn’t satisfied with what it had to offer him. If he didn’t like Waternoose, then why didn’t he just leave? Waternoose wasn’t keeping him under lock and key.
(MAW of course later shows us that Randall was secretly working as an industrial spy for Johnny Worthington, Waternoose’s corporate rival over at Fear Co. and trying to commit espionage against M.I.….. but building the Scream Extractor for Waternoose instead of Johnny throws a wrench into this ‘’theory’’ and seems a tad inconsistent… unless there was a whole other plot for Randall to assassinate Waternoose after he tested the machine and infiltrate Monsters, Inc. by taking it over and letting Johnny steal all its trade secrets, Idk… but MAW doesn’t go to great lengths to explain how and why Randall came to work for Fear Co… or WHEN for that matter.... and though it’s cool that he’s a spy, it just didn’t make a whole lot of sense when you take into account the Scream Extractor subplot... like Randall would have *had* to be a spy *before* the events of Monsters at Work... and it doesn't add up...)
Though he clearly detests Waternoose in the current storyline, there may have been a time when these two were actually close… maybe a ‘’father-son’’ bond… maybe Randall was loyal to him at one time… but it all went sour… we don’t know what the inciting incident was that drove a wedge between them (if Waternoose was in fact Randall’s mentor) because though these two clearly can’t stand each other, they’re forced to work together on this Renewable Energy Project (aka the machine) because they’re (somewhat) working towards a common goal… Waternoose wants to save his family empire from eventual bankruptcy… and Randall—though he probably doesn’t give a rat’s ass about the economy, Idk, I could be wrong, we don’t get much insight on what Randall is against or for as far as economics and politics goes because he’s otherwise so mysterious—but he is, in a sense, doing it to help lift Monstropolis from the Energy Crisis they’re currently facing… not for selfless, Good Samaritan reasons, of course, it’s just so Randall can be more important and respected than what he already is… he has a complete disregard for the lives of human children... and he clearly only cares about himself.
But if we take into account the scene where Randall is forced to watch Waternoose shake Sulley’s hand and give him public approval, it does also seem that Randall is harboring a grudge against Sulley because he’s the Golden Child Who Can Do No Wrong… that might’ve been Randall’s position at one time. He may have been Waternoose’s favorite until Sulley came along. (That’s just theory, not canon… but like I said, if Waternoose was Randall’s mentor, that might be plausible.)
If that's the case, there’s kind of a ‘’Joseph and his brothers’’ Bible thing going on here… like in the Joseph story, he’s the youngest son of Jacob and his wife Rachel and he’s clearly the favorite son out of the twelve brothers, esp. when Jacob bestows upon him a coat of many colors… naturally, his brothers are jealous that Joseph is the center of their father’s attention—the apple of his eye, if you will—and so, though it’s pretty f*cked up, you also kind of understand what drives the brothers to go ahead and sell their own brother to slave-traders in Egypt…
Like, no father should ever favor one child over another… ’cause you see what happens? That’s the set up a murder mystery right there. But even CEOs shouldn’t play favorites with their employees…. There should be fair and equal treatment across the board. It doesn’t excuse Randall’s actions, but it might explain it... given the way Waternoose treats him worse than a dog.
In my hc, Randall used to be the Top Scarer until Sulley knocked him down a peg… and this is mainly because this was the original idea when the story was still in development… this was when Randall was still ‘’Ned’’—he was the Top Dog of the Scare Floor.
Sulley of course (‘’Johnson’’) was at first a mere Assistant before they changed his role to a Scarer… except he wasn’t very good at his job. They even made a note in the early story pitch that ‘’Johnson’’ (Sulley) was ‘’A Barney Fife type’’, meaning he wanted to be the best, but he was comically inept… and he was always getting in trouble with the boss, Mr. Waternoose… (which could have been the plot of a great sitcom actually).
(Barney Fife of course is a famous character from the hit TV Show, The Andy Griffith Show (1960-68)... played by Don Knotts…. He’s a sheriff’s deputy in the small fictional town of Mayberry, North Carolina… and he’s deeply insecure but he puts on this facade of being an egoistical know-it-all to make up for his lack of actual skills in the field of law enforcement. In contrast, Andy is a very highly-respected sheriff, because he's true to himself and puts other people's needs before his own. Andy somewhat mentors Barney, who's a man child.... In fact, Mike & Sulley’s buddy duo in the final film is very similar to the dynamic of Barney Fife and Sheriff Andy Taylor… with Barney as the main comic relief (Mike) and Andy as the straight man (Sulley). It’s a great show btw I'm not telling you to watch it except I am….)
Obviously, things change in development, and the rivalry between ‘’Ned’’ and ‘’Johnson’’ didn’t make much sense in the early drafts when they weren’t even on the same level. ‘’Ned’’ (Randall) wasn’t jealous of ‘’Johnson’’ (Sulley) because Johnson was technically beneath him in skills and in rank on the Leaderboard. There was very little dramatic conflict between them. Like, what would fuel this rivalry to begin with and prompt Ned/ Randall to go ahead and create the Scream Extractor if he already has everything he wants? If he’s already Number One on Scare Floor F and the Teacher’s Pet with Waternoose, and he’s already a famous local celebrity in Monstropolis, what else does he have to gain?
So, it made more sense in the final version for Randall to always be second rate, in Sulley’s shadow. If Sulley was the Big Shot on the Scare Floor and winning praise from Waternoose, this obviously would fan the flames in Randall’s envy for something more—for something better—for something that would earn him the recognition he thought he so rightfully deserved.
Scaring alone wasn’t going to satisfy him. Randall wanted more than Scaring. He wanted to be SOMEBODY. His chosen career path was his one-way meal ticket to the Stardom he so desperately craved. And he may not have cared that much about Scaring at all, as Theboggskids said in their post:
Randall actually openly admits to Mike he no longer cares about ‘’the stupid Scare Record’’… there’s bigger fish to fry than a trivial popularity contest.
Now, if we analyze the scene between Randall & Waternoose—it’s literally the only time they speak to each other in the whole movie, but it can still be picked apart.
Randall lowkey talks back to Waternoose like he’s his dad, not his boss… like Idk ANY employees who talk to their bosses this way and it's *super* unprofessional.... almost impersonal. Talk to your boss like Randall and they'd fire your ass at the drop of a hat. Even though Randall’s gotta be at least 38, he’s quite literally acting like a moody emo teenager. Like, Randall is very emotionally stunted… he comes off the same way here as he does when he’s 18 flippin’ years old at the end of MU….
He has literally NOT changed in 20 years. And he’s almost 40. Yet here he is still acting like a college-aged kid. Like he’s been holding onto that one single five minute moment, and it’s literally stunted the growth of his emotional maturity. Like that can't be healthy.... to hold a lifelong grudge over one two minute interaction with Sulley where they didn't even speak a single solid word to each other....
(I mean, I love you down baaaaad Randall but you sound like a whiny spoiled rotten little brat here, ngl… and you’re *supposed* to be a grown-ass man responsible for your own actions, but here you are crashing out like a rabid lizard b*tch, blaming the world—aka Sulley—for your problems…)
This scene between Randall & Waternoose reminds me a little bit of the dynamic Ariel had with her overbearing father in The Little Mermaid… tell me I’m wrong.
And that’s why… with the way Randall talks to Waternoose with such a low regard or esteem for Waternoose’s position of authority… it really does make me think these two had a bond that went beyond just your basic professional partnership.
Not a weird bond. Like I said before, a mentor-student relationship that might’ve gradually developed into a father-son bond, until Sulley came along and caused a rift between them… something happened before the events of this movie to break it apart… like there’s a whole-ass movie that happened off-screen and I wish we saw THAT movie.
And I’m not blaming Sulley for Randall and Waternoose’s relationship being on the rocks. Waternoose and Randall have to take responsibility for their own actions and be held accountable for their relationship and/ or business partnership being on thin f*cking ice… they clearly don’t see eye-to-eye anymore… but if they worked together for 20 years, they must’ve been on the same page at one point in time. And by the time we get to this scene by the end of the movie, they’re at a breaking point.

All these Monsters University trailers made me rewatch Monsters Inc and I found my love for Randall back. I just always tend to like the bad guys plus Randall is all lizard-like and I realized I friggin love lizard characters. His design is amazing and I just HAD to draw him. Q w Q

OK I’LL TYPE SOME SHIT ABOUT IT <: After the scare games Randy is confronted by ROR.
He apologized a great deal but they still knocked him around a bit; nothing too bloody but enough to leave a black eye. Johnny decided when it was enough and took his ROR jacket. Of course Randy was upset about this :/ This only fueled his hatred for Sulley even more. He felt this newfound bitterness within him… he felt it gave him strength. And this strength gave him confidence. He didn’t want to be seen as vulnerable anymore. He let his conflicting emotions change him.
Johnny would now once again offer Sulley another chance at ROR as seen in the scene where Sulley tells Hardscrabble the truth. When Sulley was expelled, Johnny discovers that Sulley had cheated and ROR were the real winners. Randy also discovers this and decides to demand ROR for a second chance. Johnny sees and likes this attitude that Randy has newly characterized and lets him try again. Randy turns all rebel and spends the rest of his college years in ROR; becoming more of a dick everyday (((: The picture I drew is Mike visiting Randy for the last time before leaving the college.
I made all that up just then pretty much so ahahahaha not very thought through. I have another drawing for a separate headcanon planned where Hardscrabble confronts Randy after his encounter with ROR. It’s sorta deep and I’m not sure if I really wanna draw it. I’m crazy optimistic so it’s sometimes sorta hard for me to draw sad shit ;n;
I honestly don't care if people crap all over Randall cuz he is a piece of shit, like we're so real for this. XD He's a child kidnapper and attempted to murder both Sulley & Mike so I can understand why some people might hate him. He has very little redeeming qualities and the fact that he's sexy and badass doesn't excuse what a terrible and immoral character he actually is and I'm not afraid to say that.
HOWEVER I really can't understand the hate for Sulley, Boo and Mike... like there's very little rational reason to hate these three (I see more unnecessary hate for Mike than any other character) and yeah Mike might have some obnoxious and arrogant qualities about him but you always know his heart is in the right place unlike Randall. And he does change and grow as a person throughout the story like he's incredibly loyal and self-sacrificing you gotta give him credit where credit is due i just don't get why some of y'all can hate this... but to each their own.
Boo hate makes even less sense to me... I think @where-fading-princesses-live summed it up perfectly in the comments.
she's literally two years old... what more do people expect from this character?
(and despite her young age and the fact that she's an incredibly vulnerable victim of Randall's plot, she still has surprising depth like she still overcomes her fear of Randall and manages to help Mike & Sulley defeat him. Basically, PIXAR was very careful and deliberate in how they handled these characters. Even the toddler has character development 👏👏👏)
