Five from Five - Extended
I recently did a blog post asking some friends for their music recommendations They gave they to me, but some of them, well, two of them (Justin and Jess), decided to write an essay about it. I would ordinarily leave the essays out if what they had to say wasn't so extraordinarily amazing.
So here's Justin's and Jess's full answers from FIVE FROM FIVE. READ THE CONDENSED VERSION HERE - with picks from Sembene, Cadillac and Sherwin.
Justin - the VelociTraptor who also goes by the name Loud Lungs.
5. Leechi – Puppet Master (Original Mix)
Because: 17 year old producer with a tonne of talent, and the smallest ego - one of the humblest people I've had the opportunity to meet and play along side. Very important up and coming local to watch. Also, this track was signed to Play Me Records which is an international label and that is HUGE.
4. Phizicist – Fucking Kyle
Because: One of the hardest working local bass music proponents. One of my personal heroes, both as a dj and producer. This song show cases his personal touches as well as talent, and has an interesting combination of genres.
3. Major Lazer (featuring Flux Pavillion) - Jah No Partial (Original Mix)
Because: Absolute power house combination of the Major Lazer camp and Flux. The song is an incredible composition, I can’t say more than that, it speaks for itself.
2. Birdy Nam Nam - Goin' In (Skrillex Goin' Hard Mix)
Because: As much as people will complain about Skrillex, he knows what he’s doing and his production quality cannot be questioned – it’s flawless. I think this earned him a lot of respect even from traditional drum n bass producers.
1. A-Trak and Dillon Francis - Money Makin' (Oliver Twizt Trap Remix)
Because: I think the trap uprising has seen similar downfalls to any genre that receives a lot of attention – too many generic reproductions. What grabs me about this song is the innovation and how hard hitting it is. Also, remixing an A-Trak and Dillon Francis tune is brave.
Jessica- the sound technician with a voice that should be on the stage and not behind it.
5. Truth and its Burden - My Distance
So my favourite South African band released an album this year. I can't actually choose a track, though, because I haven't listened to the album to death yet. But Truth and Its Burden have to appear on this list, because this band have brought me out of some of my biggest funks and given me encouragement with their lyrics and their shows when I needed it the most. If I have to choose a track I guess it would be My Distance. But have a look at the album Choices, listen to the lyrics, and decide for yourself.
4. Hawkboy - King Folly
Hawkboy. Tomahawkboy. Whatever, they're amazing. The tracks were available from end of 2011, but officially released on vinyl in 2012, so it totally counts. They don't really exist anymore though, what with them being busy with the As Cities Burn reunion and all. Oh, yeah - the Hawkboy guys were/are As Cities Burn guys. Need I, really, say more? Gosh. The track itself was my theme song for a while - "you're on thin ice, with a heavy heart". Yeah, kinda emo, I know. Right after FIF ska vibes? Good luck with trying to music box me ;D
3. Five Iron Frenzy - It Was A Dark And Stormy Night
Why? WHY U ASK WHY. This is Five Iron Frenzy, they were dead! or dying! A band I discovered and fell in love with just as they broke up and broke my heart. But now, 8 or so years later, they're doing a reunion tour type vibe and releasing a new album. WHAAAAT.
2. Tim Hutchinson - Elementary Wisdom
Lucky for me he just recorded this, so I think it counts as a song from this year, available here: http://soundcloud.com/timhutchmusic/elementary-wisdom Why do I like this track especially? Besides the fact that he's my brother and therefore AMAZING, this happens to be my favourite song of his, because of what it says and how it says it. Just listen to it ok?
1. mewithoutYou - East Enders Wives
Only 5 songs means I can't choose all 11 from mewithoutYou's Ten Stories. And choosing a favourite from those is going to be hard. Flip. I do really really dig East Enders Wives, though, as well as All Circles. But seriously? mewithoutYou exist to blow minds.
