I can't sew clothes to save my life. So when I've cosplayed in the past (yes, I do that) I've had friends help m out and make my costume for me. As much fun as that was, it left me wishing I could say "Yes I made this" with the costumes I wore. Looking at some of the sprite work I do I decided to see if I could make one into a costume.
I chose Bowser because he was easily recognizable, the colours were easy to acquire, and he would be big enough to hide behind for photos. I liked the idea of a sprite appearing in random photos. I used 15cm square sheets of paper for each unit. I assembled the squares and glued them together with rice paste to help hold them. I used a hardboard backing cut slightly smaller than sprite to give it some rigidity but keep it light weight. To the back of the backing I riveted some nylon straps as hand holds for when I crouch behind for photos. The sprite was then glued to the backing. Finally the sprite was covered in resin to help protect it and make it water proof.
All-in-all Bowser took about 6-8 hours to finish if you don't include the drying time for the glue and the resin. He is composed of almost 600 pieces of paper. The costume was a success and the only damage to occur was a strap came off due to some high winds.
