“And their protective clothing is limited.” she added, tying knots together to form a bigger more informative picture of the mountain men. Knowledge that one day will serve to defeat the mountain and clear the shadows over their woods, destroy the fear her people held from being attacked and taken. Scouting took days upon weeks to mesmerize every single detail of their enemy — time the maunon didn’t have. By some means they found a way of observing them from within. Soon she would send out a hunting party to locate devices used, for now she needed to tend to her warriors that survived. “And they will be taken care of.”
"I can go back soon and track their movement. Maybe see exactly where they’ve been coming from.” It was something she had planned on doing anyway. She’d been in the woods long enough to know where to escape the fog and could handle herself if any reapers came around. Her mouth opened to protest need for a healer before nodding her head slightly with a quiet sigh. “Yes commander,” she resigned, knowing that fighting it would be a losing battle.
“Learning? You mean they have been observing us?” it was key information to what had been left unanswered. For long they had always managed a step ahead, making it nearly impossible to get closer. The previous commander had made the mistake of attacking before gaining knowledge. She could be patient. One day victory was theirs. “You are hurt, are you not? My healer will see to you.” it left no argument, she was after all responsible for her people.
Shaw nodded slightly as a response. “It’s the only thing that makes sense. They wouldn’t know all our hunting areas if they weren’t.” The younger warrior couldn’t just say no like she wanted. After all that would be lying to her commander. “There are others that need more attention than me.” It wasn’t a total lie, she knew enough to get herself past the injuries. Granted it wasn’t as neat as a healer would be, certain parts of her body scarred now from split second decisions to close a wound herself.
“They are getting bolder.” it was deeply concerning. The mountain men were gaining confidence, attacking more of her people. It was the second hunting party that had been successfully attacked and taken to her worry, in a short period of time. “Did you see anything? Heard anything that can be of use to us?” her people were getting anxious — hungry for blood and justice being served. The only problem proved as they tried to approach, it would only send her people to their deaths for the fog was unable to be fought against. A wave of death as it swept over the earth, claiming all living creatures in it’s path. “You.. are unharmed?”
"Felt like they’ve been learning. Knew how to block us in or maybe they just got lucky.” She took a breath, ignoring the pain in her side. Her clothes mostly covered the now bruised and bloodied flesh. Lexa’s question captured her attention again. She wasn’t unharmed, but there were people far worse off than her. “I’ll be fine, Commander.”

The commotion outside her doors easily carried to her ears — even while standing on her balcony overlooking Polis. Latest news of a hunting party being attacked by the maunon had been brought, very few escaped. Sucking in a deep breath, Lexa prepared herself and visibly changed as she turned around and sat down on her throne — waving for her guards to let her warriors in.
“—- tell me what happened.”
What do you think happened? Shaw thought to herself, having enough respect to not let it slip out. Polis and all its politics never interested the warrior, the girl tending to stay behind while someone more suited to the environment went to deliver news. However this time she wasn’t afforded that luxury with so many of them killed or worse. “We were tracking deer then the maunon just, came out of nowhere. They surrounded half of us, killed some, took others.”

Kira had been on her way to the Pit for Ascension Day, wanting to pay her respects to Faye and to Becca, the first Heda kom Jus who had enabled them all to thrive and give their people a sense of glory, purpose, and legacy. Kira understood things things were important, even if she wasn’t as deeply spiritual as, say, some folks in Sangeda. For her, the glory was in the actions, in the lives lived and in the cost of death. She was thinking of her father as she passed by a tree, hearing an almost shaking voice recite their resting goodbyes.
The blonde looked over her shoulder, a worried expression on her face, until she saw it was Shaw and her panic over ‘who was now dead’ was replaced with concern for Shaw, whom Kira knew hadn’t gotten the ability to properly mourn during the pyre and all the chaos that surrounded it. Kira looked to the direction of the Pit and the smoke that wafted delicious scents along the air, but she disregarded the sounds from her stomach and decided she could pay her respects to Faye and the spirit of Becca later.
Kira came round to where Shaw was sitting, on the mound with a tree at her back. She knelt down softly beside her, so as not even to disturb the leaves, and would move away if Shaw indicated she preferred that. She didn’t come out and ask, do you want to talk—that was a lot of pressure. Instead, it being Ascension Day and all, she shared something a priestess had once told her when she was mourning her father. “Did you know they say that the spirits can hear us in the tree mounds? I don’t know if it’s true, but sometimes I talk to them, anyway.”
Taking a deep breath in, Shaw’s mind couldn’t help but wander to numerous what if situations in her head. She knew there was nothing she could have done when she was younger to save her parents, but in her mind she could have saved her cousin. Even seeing Kira come closer, her mind kept running through things: what if she had stayed in Tondisi, what if she had taught the girl to defend herself better. Scenarios that logically she could answer, but would emotionally keep asking.
As the healer knelt beside her, Shaw gave Kira a small forced smile before returning her gaze to the small twig in between her fingers. “I guess that makes sense. These trees have seen more death than anyone still living in Tondisi.” Her tone coming out sharper than she meant, lightly tossing the small twig back to the ground.
“Sorry.” Shaw muttered, letting out a breath. Kira was one of three people she respected the most and she knew the healer was just trying to help. “What do you say to them?”
“Yeah, probably.” As much as Carli liked Polis, she didn’t like traveling there alone, so she didn’t go very often. “But it’s cooler here. One of the vendors makes candle holders out of skulls.”
Shaw tilted her head slightly in confusion, looking at the other girl. “So you like candle holders made out of skulls, but you’re afraid of them.” She remarked with a slight point to the group of warriors.
Ascension Day
A knowing smile crossed Ro’s lips as her eyes narrowed with pleasure, sliding her gaze toward the Trigeda brunette who’d bested the brawlers in the Oso Kin Raun wrestling match last she’d seen her. She accepted the icewater with a hitched-up half-smile and turned her body to face Shaw and focus her attentions. “So I won’t thank you for it, then,” she replied as she took a sip. “You look like shit but the jacket still looks good on you. And I’m assuming you like me a little, to waste your breath on me as opposed to the priestesses your people keep.” There was a bit of disdain in her voice for the few tattooers she knew in Trigeda. She saw Shaw had her own drink, so didn’t offer. She lifted her glass once, half-ironically, and toasted, “To Becca Pramheda!” and threw the rest of the icewater back. “Looks like you need me to carve someone’s face off.”
Hearing the blonde say she looked like shit but the jacket looked good caused a slight raise of the eyebrow. “You should work on your compliments.” Shaw turned her body slightly to face the scarrer, thinking about what she had said. “Just because I like getting out of Tondisi doesn’t mean I like you. You’re just easier to look at than they are.” She remarked thumbing over her shoulder to a clearly drunk group of men. With the toast, the warrior lifted her glass slightly before downing the rest of the icewater. With a shake of her head as the burning feeling went down her throat, Shaw placed the glass on the bar top before looking back to the blonde. “If you’re offering to carve a few ice nation faces, I wouldn’t turn it down.”
