That's a Wrap

I missed classes last week due to a death in my family so I'm not sure if Ms. Clark asked us to post about something specific. The books are read and the papers are written. This is such a relief. I wanted to share my thoughts about this class. Overall, I am not a fan of the post modern style writing. I think I enjoy more modern or traditional literature. I want an organized story, with a well developed plot, and vivid descriptions so that I may visualize the story in my head. I guess I do like the graphic nature that the post modern works expresses. Probably because over the years I have become desensitized to the brutality that would have been shocking prior to the shift. I'm glad that we have all finished this semester. This was an unusual semester with the missed classes for snow days. I will be graduating Gulf Coast and start the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at UWF on May 12. As I finished The Road I surprisingly did not cry. Granted, it was a sad ending and did stir up the ability to cry…I just held it back very well. To me, it was given from the beginning that one or both of them would die at some point in the story, so I had prepared myself for it. It does not...

After reading your post I can understand what you are saying about the background not being important to the story because it is the past, but I have to admit the whole time I wish I knew what actually happened. It would have made it more realistic for me. Almost given it more credibility. It's like a movie that leaves you hanging at the end. I guess I need closure and background info to make it a pleasant read. Finally finished the book and watched the movie so I guess I have officially done all the required reading and completed my last paper. Could not be happier. This should be my last reblog.

Just finished the book!! I will say I cried a few times. I honestly thought both the son and father were going to die. I had a feeling the father was because of the blood he kept coughing up, but the son too when he got really sick. It was all in all a pretty good book. I didn’t like the ending…

I watched the movie several years ago. As I am reading the book I can visualize parts of the movie. I plan to re-watch the movie after I finish the book. I haven’t finished the book because my sister in law passed away this last weekend. I have been distracted lately. I remember crying during the last time I viewed the movie. I wonder if I will have the same emotions after reading the book. I hope we never have to experience this kind of condition during our lifetime. This book has a limited amount of subject matter so I feel it is going to be difficult to write a paper about. By the end of this weekend it will be behind all of us and all that will require our focus is the final. I’m so ready. Finals then graduation.

Survival

This book was a difficult read for me. Being a parent, I can imagine how the father felt. His only mission was to guide and protect his son. In our current world this is not much of a challenge but during this book it was an extreme hardship to ensure his son's survival. Every parent strives to meet the basic needs while also trying to give some of the luxuries as well. The father was always in search of food and when he came across the soda he wanted his son to experience this treat. This is a simple illustration of the joys involved in giving children the extras in life. It is hard to imagine watching your child almost starve or freeze to death. When they would rummage through the stores in search of food all the expensive merchandise would be left behind. The total opposite of what might be seen if stores today were robbed. Blog 4/23/14

The Road

Has anyone started reading The Road yet?? I started reading it yesterday and I had to keep reading. I finished the whole novel in one day. I have to say it was the best book I have read all semester! It was not confusing and didn’t have a billion points of views or characters to remember! I just do not know how it relates to post modernism. Hope when you start reading it you enjoy it as much as I did. I think it was a great novel to save for the last reading.

I'm glad to hear that it was an easy read. I started reading it but it seems to start slow as Ms. Clark said. I really want to finish it this weekend but I have some other assignments due so I need to prioritize. This may have to wait until next week and then I will hopefully get to write my paper next weekend. At least that is my plan. I watched the movie a few years ago and as I'm reading I can visualize the movie in my head. I haven't reached any of the gory parts yet and I'm not looking forward to reading it either. It was hard to watch in the movie. It's hard and scary to imagine if the story were to become reality. I'm not sure if I would have the strength to go on or give up as the wife in the book. Death became the protection from the awful world that her husband could not provide for her, or so she thought.

The Goon is GONE

Only one more book to read this semester. It's almost over but we still need to write a paper. I didn't really like the goon squad so I didn't want to use it for my paper. That means I will have a time crunch to read The Road in order to write 750 words about it in less than a week. I felt like the Goon Squad was PoMo because it had foreshadowing and the order in which the story was told. I had to put the events in order after reading several chapters and piecing the events together to form a timeline. The strengths of the book were how well the characters developed. We were able to understand them personally and the direction their life took based on the descriptions that were given. We saw the poor choices made and the impact it had on their lives later. The weaknesses of the book were the amount of characters to keep track of, the order the stories were presented in, and the way the book ended. This book reminds me of a reality TV show, no plot but lots of drama. If you connect with the character you want to know what happens next in their story/life. Blog 4/12/14

This is helpful but kind of a spoiler. I don't mind spoilers, actually kinda love them but others may not want to look at this until they finish the book. I was wondering what happened to Sasha after reading several chapters. I haven't finished yet, still 2 more chapters but now I know what to expect. I don't really like surprises so now the anticipation is gone and it will just reveal the ending that I know to be coming. I kinda wanted Sasha to end up with Bobby. They had a special relationship and he was so distraught because he never let his feelings for her be known. I guess I need to finish the book so I find out what happens between them. I wonder if she gets angry because he betrayed her by telling Drew her past. I will soon find out.

Not enough

When I first started reading this book I wasn't interested in it, but now I have found myself wanting to know more. The characters have slowly evolved giving us a little more info throughout the book. They have such depth now but I still find myself wanting more. When one story ends I hope they will reappear later so I can get the answers to my questions. I now appreciate the way the timeline is put together. As reading little pieces of the story are revealed so I can fill in the missing parts of the story. I haven't finished the book yet but I am curious about the ending. Hopefully it will wrap up all the characters and not leave us hanging at the end. That would be a total disappointment. I would never have chosen this book on my own so I guess I was exposed to a literature piece that is a new experience which I can imagine to be the purpose. Blog 2/6/14

Change

I was unable to make class this week because of conflicting Spring break schedules with my children. I'm wondering how everyone is feeling about the new book. I wanted to mention a movie I watched that seems to fall under the post modern work. Dallas Buyers Club was a movie about subject matter that in the past would not have been in the media. AIDS patients, cross dressers, and homosexuals but the story touched my heart. The main character has such a dynamic transformation that is so real. His opinions and prejudice are so strong at the beginning but throughout the movie you can see them slowly erode. It also has some negatives about the health care system and FDA that are scary to consider. I am learning through this class that I enjoy movies far more than literature. Blog 3/28/14

I agree.  The narrator switching with each chapter makes it confusing to follow.  When you are use to reading novels that flow sequentially, with a few flashbacks, it is difficult to read several books in a row that jump all around.  You are not able to get to know the characters and feel their emotions.  I get confused who the story is about and who I am pulling for. I can not figure out why the author spent so much time on the gold flakes and the fact he can not get it up.  Is that the point of the story - he finally gets it up and has sex, or he never again has it.

I am also having mixed emotions about the new book. It seems like the chapters are not flowing well. They are almost unrelated. I am also not really finding the plot or haven't noticed it yet. I haven't gotten very far but up to this point I am not interested in the characters or what is going on. Hopefully the book will get better and turn out to be something I can gain from. Only about a month of classes left! Sooooo excited.

Like everyone else I am screaming for the joy of spring break! I finally get an opportunity to take a small break from school which is entirely needed right now. My mind starts to fall apart like the Walking Dead zombies around the spring break time..oh that count down seemed like an eternity. I am also relived about the break from school. I was playing catch up all semester because I was studying for my state board and didn't have the time to devote to reading. Now that I have taken the test I hope to stay current with the required reading. I am spending my spring break at hospital orientation so I'm not relaxing as planned but I am starting my career. I will be working nights so it will be a challenge going to class in the mornings but we only have a few more weeks. I can torture myself for a little while longer. To address your question about the speaker, I just got a bad vibe. I wasn't feeling his presentation. It was a brief summary/ outline of his book that I was immediately not interested in due to the title. He seemed arrogant and I didn't not agree with his religious and political opinion so I was not willing to hear his message. I guess my attitude was that of which he was speaking but somethings are just not worth reconsideration. He may have influence where he is from but I'm from the south and don't want anyone coming into the place where I want to learn and try to convince there is no God.

Extra credit

I don't know how many of you attended the extra credit opportunity this past week but I was disappointed. I had to leave a little early to pick up my kids from school but of the little I heard from Dr. Peter Bogohossian we should be carful what we allow to influence our thinking. His lecture on critical thinking taught that attitude was the most important aspect. I disagree, as a nursing student we were taught how to think critically and it included knowledge and skills. Dr. Bogohossian work includes a book "A Manual for Creating Atheists" which in my opinion should not be something to teach to the young impressionable minds for the future generations of leaders. I was shocked that our school would bring such a liberal teacher and encourage or bribe the students to attend by enticing them with extra credit. I do believe in critical thinking and understand its importance but not with sacrificing our moral and character beliefs. His work seems to be postmodern by way of accepting more behaviors or actions by allowing tolerance. Blog 3/15/14

I initially had the same idea about writing the essay on love. I had an outline and had already written the introduction when I decided to change the theme to consequences. I wanted to bring attention to how the minor mistakes cost the lives of some of their platoon members. I also brought up how the author contemplated the idea of not going to war. There were several themes throughout the book that would have been interesting to write about. I'm glad you chose love and that I changed to consequences so that Ms. Clark didn't have to read multiple papers that were similar. I'm glad to have the paper done and we only half of the semester left.

Truth

As I reflect on the material we have covered this semester I have mixed emotions. I try to benefit from the knowledge others have learned throughout their life. I enjoyed the "Things They Carried" because I could see the characters truth and feelings. I could identify with their experiences and pain. But I have been disappointed by "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" because to me it is a story of "nothingness" which I care not to waste my time on. This is a depressing story about the lack of emotions between the grandparents hiding the real pain. I would never read this book with my own free time. I want to use my time wisely by reading about other peoples tragedy and how they were able to overcome or deal with real pain. I hope to grow and learn from the books I spend hours of my life reading. I seek wisdom and knowledge which in my opinion can be gained from books or real life situations. Blog# 3/6/14

I was saddened by our classmates not liking the character. I try not to judge anyone because we don't know the story or the circumstances they are currently facing or have battled to overcome. I can't imagine having a mentally challenged child. It is extremely hard to raise a "normal" kid these days. I also agree about the grandfather. He had an extreme amount of baggage that was brought in a dysfunctional relationship. I don't understand going through life without experiencing love. In my opinion that is what living is all about and if you can't share those experiences or memories with others you have truly missed out on this wonderful adventure called life. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable to heartache can be a challenge especially if someone has already wounded or broken the heart previously but there isn't another way to get the opposite which is true love. The ones that choose to protect themselves from ever being hurt may not finding the comfort someone can be when the world turns dark and ugly.

The Beginning I just took the most important test of my life thus far. The NCLEX is one test that allows the beginning of a nursing career. So much time and preparation has gone into this stressful event. On my drive back from Tallahassee I was thinking about how I could relate this event to post modernism. It came to me that I received the inspiration to pursue this career path from the medical television shows. I have always enjoyed shows like Grey’s Anatomy, ER, House, and even Dr. 90210. To get a glimpse inside of a world that I would otherwise not have known. I realized that these shows had me fascinated by the human body and the way healthcare professionals could restore and even change the problems each body faces. I would have never know that I would enjoy this field without the type of television that blends real life situations with a little drama. I learned after the start of school that as interesting as the shows may be it is not reality. I still enjoy these shows but know that this is not a true representation of what I have seen. Maybe in another city it may be closer to the TV situations but from what I have seen it is not a true depiction. I am thankful for these shows because they have encouraged me to create and follow new goals that would have otherwise not been considered. There is so much more I hope to accomplish and learn but this is my beginning.

I am eager to watch this movie. I know that it stars Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock so I'm even more excited. I agree about the loss thought the book. The entire nation was affected by this tragic event and the loss of innocent American lives. I can't imagine losing a parent this way. I don't think at his age I would have been as brave and courageous to explore for the answers myself in the huge city. His fearlessness is so refreshing during a time when I am afraid to let me own children play unattended in the culdesac in front of the home where we live. I have children around his age and I think they must not have the maturity I see in Oskar. Or maybe I am just naïve and want to try to protect them from the cruel realities of this world. Hopefully my children never have to experience such grief and will only see this type of tragedy in the media. I will try to keep the sheltered from such evil and brutality.
