Victor Frankenstein after achieving the impossible and building a fucking person from scraps of the dead: Oh god, ew, ew it's ugly! Yucky! Yucky! Gross! Ew! Ew! Yucky! Yucky! Gross! Ew!
tw: pedophilia?
one facet of the roland is a predator argument i haven't seen discussed is that wouldn't andrew have looked 17 like look at any 17 year old around that is a child andrew is already so short and surely he still had some form of baby fat in his face or more teenage underdeveloped features or did teens look that different in the 2000s that it was impossible to differentiate them from adults?
or did roland see andrew and was attracted to someone that is obviously a child
i don't know but its been on my mind for a long time
Teens definitely looked like teens in the early 2000s! I think it was just more socially acceptable for adults to publicly admit to being attracted to teenagers and basically waiting for teenagers to turn 18 (Hilary Duff, Emma Watson, the Olsen Twins, basically any Disney Star) so they (the grown men) could have sex with them without being arrested for statutory. Whereas that is now thankfully considered creepy.
Andrew would have definitely looked like a 17-year-old boy at 17. Even ‘mature looking teenagers’ look like teenagers. Also, yes, when you’re 5’0 people do assume you are younger based on height alone. Andrew, at 17, at 5’0 (or maybe even 4’11 if he wasn’t done growing yet), without any kind of beard to hide behind, definitely would not have passed for an adult man. He would have realistically looked like a teenager b/c he was a teenager.
Roland also would have known that Andrew was at the end of his junior year in HS or beginning his senior year in HS. We also know that Roland never hooked-up with Andrew prior to Andrew being forcibly medicated - so Roland definitely looked at this 17-year-old, intoxicated (on his pills, dust, and alcohol) high school boy and was like yep! This is what I’m into! Underage, mentally unwell & high teenagers!
The only other character we know Roland mentioned finding attractive is Neil. When Neil first came to Eden’s when Neil was 18 & Roland was 26. Who Roland then helped Andrew drug. It is a bit of an uncomfortable pattern! It definitely gives the vibe Roland would still be willing to sleep with teenagers regardless of how old he himself is. [I wonder if the people willing to brush aside Roland at 23 wanting a 17-year-old Andrew would be as willing to brush aside Roland at 33, or 43, or 53 still sleeping with teenagers]. Man needs to start being interested in men his own age.
I'm going to add onto this real quick to also address the argument that Andrew was more "mentally mature" than the average 17-year-old boy because of his trauma from childhood sexual assault & from being incarcerated as a child. The original question & response I gave was about physically appearing older. This is going to be about how a traumatized teenager is in fact, still a teenager, and hasn't been Enlightened from all his trauma to having the mental maturity of an adult man with decades of therapy & is in fact at higher risk of experiencing harm - such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.
And listen, y'all know I love Nicky but I've said it before: Nicky was not so-much a parent to the twins as he was a Cool Older Brother - which makes sense considering Nicky's age & his own childhood trauma - but a lack of actual parental figures does put children & teenagers at higher risk of experiencing harm. Andrew (and Aaron) were working at a night club at 17 where they had consistent access to alcohol & dust (a fictional drug) while Aaron was recovering from a severe drug addiction to the point that Andrew intervened by locking him in a washroom for a DIY rehab - and again, this should already indicate that Andrew's maturity level is that of a teenager and that Nicky's authority over the twins was minimal because somehow DIY rehab sounded like a good idea to everyone involved.
Moreover, this is an Andrew who… what six months ago? placed himself in a car crash that killed another person - and no matter how much you plan, if you're staging a car crash deadly enough to kill someone and you are also in the car, you're risking killing yourself as well - this is Andrew's mental state. A passively suicidal teenager who was canonically tired of being alive & currently in the process of developing several addictions: cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs, as many traumatized teenagers are prone to doing.
Roland, a 23-year-old bartender who we can assume was relatively sober, had frequent & private access to Andrew at 17 when he was drunk & high. Andrew had no parents, no friends, a complicated relationship with Aaron who he was fighting with, a complicated relationship with Nicky who Andrew was refusing to bond with & who didn't understand Andrew - so basically no support system. He had no one to talk to about his CSA, his sexuality and being gay, or his relationship with Roland.
He also had misdiagnosed mental health & improper medication that made him constantly manic and unable to concentrate, and had literally just rejoined society a year ago after being incarcerated for three years from the ages of 13-16, which is not only a horrifically long sentence for a child, but also impedes a child's social and mental development because instead of being a son, a brother, a student, a friend, you are literally a prisoner. You have been imprisoned by the state - you share a cell with other children, you wear a prison uniform, you are observed by guards who are allowed to subdue you with force such as batons or pepper-spray at their discretion, you may be placed in solitary confinement which means total isolation, you may be strip-searched, you may be hand-cuffed.
Obviously, we have no textual evidence of Andrew's experience in juvie other than contradictory claims that he was released early for good behavior & narrowly avoided additional sentencing, however, juvie is objectively considered to be a dehumanizing experience that results in more trauma for children who are already usually traumatized.
Childhood trauma - especially the multiple instances of rape that Andrew experienced at four different foster homes & childhood incarceration, does not actually result in a child "growing up quicker" but can actually lead to stunted maturity. A traumatized, unwell 17-year-old who has experienced multiple instances of punitive such as being literally incarcerated for his earliest teenage years, and then had one year of trying to rejoin society (in which he then literally murdered his birth mother) and then was placed on medication that made it impossible for him to function normally is not in fact a… Sexy Teenage Seducer who is "reclaiming his power" especially considering that the secrecy of Andrew/Roland b/c what Roland is doing is definitely illegal for several reasons quite literally mimics the secrecy of Andrew's childhood CSA. He is a fumbling adolescent who had a violent introduction to sex via rape at the age of seven and is perhaps trying to search for bodily autonomy after having it denied to him for… years.
However, the fact of the matter is that Roland either pursuing or accepting the sexual advances of an intoxicated 17-year-old, then being unable to follow Andrew's boundaries and needing to be hand-cuffed, reaffirms Andrew's beliefs that sex is dangerous & cannot be mutually satisfying. There is a reason that Andrew's relationship with Roland never develops despite them hooking up for two years versus the few months he was with Neil & their relationship developed in leaps and bounds.
Andrew's choice is the choice of a traumatized teenager on incorrect medication who is struggling to rejoin society & has literally no one to confide in or properly talk to. I think it makes sense for Andrew’s character but I think we as readers don’t need to pretend that this was the Best or Healthiest choice for Andrew or that Roland is meant to be a good man, when I don’t think that is what we are meant to read into Andrew/Roland.
Peter: When I was a child I was deathly afraid of vampires so I stole garlic powder from the kitchen and kept it in my pocket. If I was out after dark and thought someone was acting suspicious Id subtly sprinkle a little garlic powder on them Peter: Like imagine a weird little boy deciding you failed his vibe check and promptly seasoning you

we talk a lot about how much of a revelation andrew’s confession is for neil, and not enough about how revelatory neil’s reaction is for andrew. because like. imagine you like this boy. but he doesn’t swing. you know the answer would be “no,” so there’s no point in even asking. then he goes and gets himself needlessly tortured for you, and tells you there’s no amount of suffering he wouldn’t endure for you. not because he thinks you’re weak, but because he thinks you’re worth protecting. he says things that you would interpret as advances if it were literally anyone else. you remind yourself that he doesn’t swing. now you’re at eden’s and he’s asking about your feelings for him in 12 different ways. he really wants to know. so you tell him, in the most casual and crass way you can, thinking that’ll put an end to it. but unfathomably, it doesn’t. he asks you why you didn’t tell him. why would you have? it would have been a “no.” you say that, and instead of confirming it, he just echoes your words, clearly still reeling. you start to leave, and he tells you that he wants to keep playing your game. while the absence of a “no” is obviously not the same thing as a “yes,” you’ve been operating for months and months under the assumption that the answer would be unequivocal. so you keep waiting for that answer, but it never comes. for the first time since you met him, you wonder if maybe it’s not a “no” after all. if maybe you could have this. you can’t remember the last time you were able to have something you wanted. the world tilting on its axis, indeed.
i actually think andreil are extremely good at communicating #myhottake
do you guys ever think about andrew abruptly ending most of his and neil's conversations by saying "i'm done talking to you now. go away" and neil listening every single time and how that was probably one of the first things to make andrew wonder if neil would respect his "no" in other situations
"James Potter's one true love is Regulus Black," I scream as they drag me off the stage.
"She's right, you know," a voice says.
I turn around and there she is. Lily Evans.
when regulus drowned, he immediately thought of james. not because he wanted james to save him or because he regretted leaving james—none of that, no.
regulus simply thought of the first moment he forgot to breathe. his body tried to recall a moment that felt like drowning, to find familiarity that will procure a solution for it. his brain scoured through the terrifying meetings held at grimmauld place, at the heartbreaking night of sirius’ departure, at the precise decision he offered his life for an unrecognized cause.
but regulus could do nothing but think of james potter. breathtaking james fleamont potter. the way james’ smile tugged at his heart it’s four chambers tried to lurch out of his throat to glance at him in the flesh. james whose very existence took his breath away.
he saw the james in his vision and his heart gave a tight squeeze. regulus could not scream, but his heart did nothing but call for james, james, james.
unbeknownst to anyone, regulus black’s last moments weren’t so sad after all—not to him at least.

pt.1 & 2 andreil at the club
he wouldn't have left.
that's the problem.
if neil ran, andrew would understand.
if neil was hiding, andrew would find him eventually.
if neil was dead, at least there would be an answer.
but neil is just gone.
