Noelle Whitfield’s older sister, she grew up in a house full of love and laughter. Shelby is the second oldest in the family, they have an older brother. The day that her parents brought home little Noelle, the five year promised to always look after her. From the day she never saw Noelle differently, she was always her sister no matter what. But Shelby loved all of her siblings equally. Besides being with her siblings, she had her own little group of friends growing up. They all went to same the same private school and did very well in that said private school. The Whitfield’s had an image to keep up and Shelby did just that. Getting high grades, being on honor roll and graduating at the top of her class and getting accepted to Oxford.
Shelby went off to college and that was when her troubles started. In a way she started to act out a little bit. First it was just skipping class every once and in awhile and next thing she knew she was partying all the time. Getting high and drunk to escape how she felt. Slowly the drugs and drinking took over her life. Of course she refused to admit that she had a problem because she was Whitfield and they didn’t get problems like this. Shelby did her best to keep up appearances though, even if she was barely passing her school, she ended up barely graduating with her business degree.
One night of celebrating, she got drunk and high at a party. Instead of calling a cab, she decided to drive. There was an accident that Shelby caused while driving, she had been high and drunk at the time and she hit someone and took their life. She never knew who it was because her parents took matters into their own hands and took care of it. They ended up getting Shelby help as well and checked her into a private rehab.
After she got out of rehab, Shelby made a big decision and change in her life to help people. She decided to become a drug and alcohol counselor. Which meant she went back for more schooling. Since she had been through it people were impressed that she was able to overcome it. Over the years, Shelby has became a sponsor and mentor to a lot of different people. She likes to think that she is making a difference and giving these people their lives back.
When her sister moved to Baberton, she was worried about her because she wasn’t sure if Noelle was ready to know her birth mother. It was a lot and Shelby being the big sister wanted to be there for her. But when she came back, her worries went away especially after meeting Noelle’s girlfriend who seemed to have good intentions. Noelle would tell Shelby stories of the people there, it seemed like they needed help. So when Noelle moved back to Baberton, Shelby followed this time. Making the decision to help with sponsor people, one of her sponsorees is in fact Penny Lane, she wants to help the girl as much as possible. She met her while she was applying at the local rehab center. She got the job there and also volunteers at some local churches to help.
When Shelby first started partying by drinking and doing drugs she was raped by some guy. She doesn’t remember his name but she remembers what he looked like and turned him into the police but he was never caught.
Her parents paid off the family of the guy that she hit while she was drunk and high. Shelby regrets what she did and how her family handled things. She hasn’t touched a drink or gotten high ever since. Turns out it was Donal Cross.
When her sister moved to Baberton, she was worried about her but then she came back with a girlfriend. But before she even left the first time, Shelby noticed some signs of drug use but she couldn’t say anything because her sister left to Baberton. And when she came back, she seemed happy but still the signs were there and there was something else going on. Shelby wants to help her but she isn’t sure how to approach her about it.
