Final Project: Composite/Transitional Forms

Anyways, this was the final project of the Fall semester for my 3D Design class.  We had to use composite forms (such as a shape/form being cut out of another shape/form) and transitional forms (in this case not quite a solid, plane, line, and/or a combo of all 3).  I solved this composition by using mostly transitional forms (planes starting to form into solids and partial lines) and the longer piece is a composite.  It’s funny when I was doing all my previous projects, I always had threshold pieces.  Now that I have to design a composition with said elements (threshold/composite) it was a lot harder to think of what to do.  I feel that there is a sense of herierchy with the end that is more busy compared to the composite line.  The negative space is also interesting in the round.  Overall, this was my most difficult project to solve.  I think I would like to add more pieces that expand into the negative space.  It seems that the composition isn’t that expansive per se.  It stays in one general area.  I think that is what I would like to add.

Assignment #2: Solids

Here is my second assignment that I finally managed to get done.  Originally, I had something completely different.  I spackled it with 2 different types of spackle and they dried in different tones (one was cheap and the other was heavy duty quality).  I decided to spray paint it to make it all a solid white, however, it ate through the cheap spackle and then the styrofoam.  Needless to say, I learned my lesson and not to mention I had to start over.  This project dealt with how solids interact with space around it.  Also, I had to learn what threshold meant.  I believe that I met the requirements of the assignment.  I had to make the composition with only three solids and make it dynamic in the round.  I feel I met that criteria, however, there are things I wish I could fix.  Styrofoam is difficult to sand down and make smooth so there are little flakes of styrofoam that stick out.  I feel it could have been more dynamic.  I didn’t realize how heavy the sphere shape was until the gluing process so I had to play off of that to try and find a solution.  I think it is promising, but it could definitely use some more touch-ups.  I would argue that I have hierarchy going on in the composition that has 2 out of 3 shapes that are triangular so I feel there is an emphasis on the sphere shape.

Oh my goodness!

So I had to design a logo and layout design (envelope, web page, business card) for this elementary school in my area and although my layout design didn’t win, my logo did! I will be honest I didn’t see it coming, thought others in my class did a better job.  It means so much and I am glad my logo won.  The logo means the most because that is the face of the school, the image of the school. I seriously can’t believe I won.  It is just an honor and such a huge step into my art future (mostly design but art is life, let’s face it).  Anyways, I will post it soon, it is still currently being graded.  Although mind the crudeness because it is an intro to graphic design course and before we are allowed computer design courses we must be able to design by hand rendering compositions/designs.

Assignment #5: Solids, Planes, & Lines

This assignment was extremely challenging in the fact that we had to take everything we have been learning and combine it all.  I was inspired by my previous composition on lines.  However, I tried to play a lot with negative space by making the lines go in crazy directions.  At first I was nervous it wouldn’t even hold up, however, adding a penetrating connection.  I loved how the space is so dramatically cut up.  This isn’t completely finished because my solid (the thicker triangle pointing down) is threshold between solid and plane.  I would like to add more variation in thickness of the main two triangles as well.

Assignment #4: Lines

First, off this project was definitely a learning curve.  It was very stressful, however, the process itself wasn’t very difficult.  I experimented with all sorts of penetrating connections.  I wanted to give a strong sense of motion.  I felt the “triangular shapes” and strong lines helped gave that sense of motion.  However, in the round, the way I arranged the lines definitely gave way to appearing as it is a new composition every turn.  Some lines disappear and reappear.  My overall issue was getting some of the connections to stay.  However I couldn’t really change the way I did the connections because it would change the overall feel and movement of the composition.  I believe for next time I will be more conscious of the types of connections I make in the future.  One thing I love about the composition (to which why the failing of connections made me so absolutely) is how it looks it could tip over at any moment but doesn’t.

Assignment #3: Planes

This assignment’s objective was to play with space such as interior and exterior spaces. All the planes had to be exactly 90 degrees. Which is something that I could fix and improve upon. This assignment was overall easy to understand but I wanted to challenge myself. I didn’t want everything to be just a simple rectangular-like shape so I went with odd-ball angled shapes. However, the challenge was trying to get the rest of the composition to relate. I decided that the horizontal vertical plane lines up with the base while the vertical plane is exactly on the edge. The horizontal plane’s (that also creates a penetrating connection) angles line up with some of the base’s angles. Thus making a strong interior space.

Graphic Design Class: Personal Symbol (Duality ideas)

The point of this project was to create a glyph (simplified illustration) of two ideas. Being my last name is Fox and I have the oddest fascination/obsession with them, it was only natural to illustrate one. The other idea is video games. Always played video games with my older cousin (pretty much my brother) and I love how it turned out!

Project #1: Bas Relief made out of Balsa wood and Basswood

First off, this project was absolutely difficult for me personally. I am an illustrator, a 2D designer. The exercises that led to the project were fun but when it came down to the actual process of making the design to 3D, it was just incredibly foreign to me. The exercises were just simply cutting out shapes and rearranging them in a viewfinder to show relationships with shapes. I had issues with the material (I intended to only use Balsa wood but the store I went to only had certain sized cuts of the wood), I had issues not exactly knowing how the material can work as an artistic medium (like I said I am a 2D artist), the shapes couldn’t represent any objects (abstract is my favorite and I couldn’t even do that), the tools were also foreign to me etc, etc... This was my crash course on learning how to do so. Despite my cries and frustrations, I believe it actually works. I plan to post pictures of how the shadows actually play a role (lighting also had to add to the design so the shadows could create a unique experience to the design). Overall, as most artists feel about their work, I feel I could have done way better but I feel I reached that point of frustration with the project that I am ready to move on and maybe a new project will open a different door for me to actually feel I can connect with the course and its materials. 

I must say that I have learned a lot in this project and the biggest thing is to not overthink anything. To simply make sure to follow the elements or assignment objective (how big does it have to be or what shapes or sense of hierarchy, etc) and to just go with it. Don’t think about it and just go. When an artist is introduced to a new material it is extremely intimidating.

Recently, I have added to this piece. I have added a penetrating connection to the piece. The penetrating connection is the rectangle that appears to be interfering with the triangle. This gives more support and it reinforces the power of hierarchy in the upper-hand corner.
