“To play it safe is not to play.” – Robert Altman, born on this day in 1925.
Just two more days until Jenny Lewis plays at my first Ryman Auditorium show! One of a few performances to commemorate the 10th anniversary of her album Rabbit Fur Coat!

Woke up to the news that David Bowie had died, went to work and now I’m home listening to my favorite album of his. 1971’s Hunky Dory is the promise of what’s to come. There are flashes of all his ensuing personas here, from hard rocking Ziggy Stardust in “Queen Bitch” to the ‘80s pop star who did “Let’s Dance.” He knew it early on and I’m glad he took us along for the ride. #vinyl #hunkydory

Goodbye Ziggy, for real this time. rip David Bowie.
David Bowie’s rare cover of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ by Joy Division.
A chance meeting in 1983 had David Bowie, Bernard Sumner and Peter Hook chatting away over beers in the Kings Arms in Salford. “…So we were all there just having a laugh and we joked that he should come n have a jam with us, then next minute - well, it was the next day actually, but i didn’t expect he’d definitely come by - and we were in the practice rooms and we were playing Love Will Tear Us Apart and I was like, f%$k we’re playing Love Will Tear Us Apart with David Bowie singing, this is crazy. We never released it - Bowie took a recording of it, and just layered some more vocals on for fun, sent it back to me…”
I ended 2014 wishing for “Better Things” ahead and I could not be more grateful for all the great experiences 2015 brought. Most of these songs are touchstones from this past year, others are new tunes I kept coming back to.
Think of it as two albums: Tracks 1-21 (From Dawes to Glen Hansard) and 22-42 (The Weeknd to My Morning Jacket) and no shuffling!
Happy New Year Everyone!

Shakey Graves put on an amazing show at the Cannery Ballroom. Glad to finally see him live. #Nashville #shakeygraves (at Cannery Ballroom)
Hey so can u give like a ratio of new to old Laura songs she played in the set?? I'm super excited for the new songs but I'd also like to hear the old ones lol!
She really only played the four songs from Once I Was an Eagle at the beginning, everything else was new.
It’s very rare that you get to hear an artist’s new songs live in concert, even rarer still when you hear most of their new album ahead of its release. Laura Marling performed the songs of her new album and I was lucky enough to be there.
The new album is apparently called “Semper Femina” and it’s all about women. The songs have a more soulful sound, there is even one you can dance to. There’s also one that’s kind of a waltz and one called “Tennessee Junior” - the only reason I remember that name is because it was the last song she played.
There was a strict no-cell phone policy so I couldn’t jot down notes or take pictures so a lot of things are lost to memory. Still, I’ll always remember her playing a guitar and putting her heart into these new songs. She was riveting.
She began her set with the first four songs from “Once I Was An Eagle,” all played together as they are on that fine record. A Dolly Parton tune, “Do I Ever Cross Your Mind,” followed and then we dove deep into her new songs.
“We gave you fair warning” she said.
The Nashville crowd could not be happier.
I had hoped to hear one of my favorite songs of hers - “Goodbye England,” but that didn’t happen. What we did hear was much more special than I could have hoped for and I’m thankful for that.
“We raise our glasses and we cheer, Should old acquaintances disappear, Just as we wipe away a tear” - The Sharpest Thorn. RIP Allen Toussaint
