Patrick Stump sent me a personal e-mail while I was recovering from a liver transplant in the hospital.

Dear Samantha,

I hear you’re having a rough go of it. It’s unfair when these things happen. However, your friends went out of their way to make sure we got messages out to you. You must be one spectacular person!

I don’t know much about you, so I’ll just tell you about what I’m up to right now; I’m sitting in my hotel in Tokyo. The sun is blazing through my window right now which overlooks a quaint little square in the middle of this busy city. The trees (they appear to be cherry blossoms) are in full bloom; Explosions of glorious pink and white. Pretty exciting stuff for a silly little rock musician.

Today we’re meeting a band called One OK Rock who are apparently big fans of ours and they seem to be rather large here in Japan. That’s always such a strange thing when artists like what you do. You never really feel worthy of it. Anyhow, I’m brushing up on their material so I don’t look like a fool when I talk to them.

What music do you like? Aside from Fall Out Boy (I’m assuming since you’re an Overcast Kid :). What did you grow up listening to? Growing up, my dad would sit in this far corner of the house every weekend and sing. He still has the guitar he played; It’s a big 1969 acoustic with a hole worn through where he’d strummed for decades. Still sounds amazing. I guess that’s what I listened to most as a kid. He’d play his own songs but then Beatles, Eagles, Steve Goodman, Stevie Wonder…even a little James Brown.

I saw the Watch on the plane. It was kind of dumb but in an awesome way. Seemed to be mostly improvised but I kind of like that (I took some improv comedy classes in LA for a little while). What kind of movies do you like? Have you seen anything good lately?

Well, I think I’m going to get back to sleep. The time change is very confusing. I wish I were there to say hello but, failing that, here’s a little letter :) Anyway, it’s nice getting to talk to you and hang in there.
