ok, this isn't me logging on, because i want to sleep, but basically i'll give a lo' down fro' down of why i haven't been online, because i'm getting notification emails and skype messages on my phone
basically, when i was dropping the bae off home the other day, i got really motion sick, and it hasn't gotten better since. i've also gotten ridiculously tired, so i'm basically sleeping all day and night, and i'm arguing with me dad which has never happened
right now, i just need a break from stuff, and tumblr and rp is getting me way too wired up, and just being here right now is making me feel all the more nauseous. which, obviously, isn't how it's supposed to be if this is apparently a hobby
so right now, i'm just gonna ignore everybody and try get healthy and my shit back together, because right now, i have no idea what the fuck i'm supposed to do
call this my "byn's having an existential crisis" hiatus

"Oh, come and dance with me!"

"I don’t understand why some people are treated like men, and others like animals."
"Well, the man’s got an ego."
"If you’re going to be a sore loser, then I shan’t do this again."
"You would be surprised what I know how to do."
"I don’t think I understand how you… do what you do."
"Are you sure this is what you want?"
"You must think me some kind of freak."
"How do you wash away the things that you’ve done?"
"Well, they’re sarcastic.”

bloody hell how do you make such a wonderful oc? any tips?
oh my gosh, first of all, thank you so much :33 honestly, really, thank you, you’re wonderful, i love you.
okay, so i’ll try and give a lo’ down fro’ down of what works for me, if i can. this is gonna be ridiculously long, so i’ll put it under a read more. i guess this is going to be more of a guide. if this isn’t your method, or doesn’t work for you, sorry :/
byn’s guide to making ocs.
1. faceclaim —— i absolutely always choose this first. always.
my tip in that department is to find one that isn’t overused, and so, don’t go for the huge tumblr fandom fcs (i.e. main characters in Doctor Who, Sherlock, Vampire Diaries, etc). when i see them, they never stick out for me, and in the end, your fc is the first thing potential followers are gonna see.
there is also another issue for this — my friend and i mistook a blog using Sebastian Stan as an fc as a Bucky Barnes blog for weeks, because of the images they used and the lack of information on the home page. when we finally got around to looking over the pages properly, we found it was actually a blog for one of our favourite game characters.
think of your fc as advertisement for your product. the fc is not the character, but with ocs, it’s often the first thing that draws people in. and so, as such, i tend to do it first also.
i had wanted to properly use Daniel Dae Kim for a long while, now. i hadn’t seen him used for any other character, and due to the vast amount of resources for him (gifs and icons), it seemed hugely appropriate.
i knew i wanted an oc for The Walking Dead. using an actor from a show like Lost, for obvious reasons, is something that seemed like a no-brainer to me. for others wanting ocs for apocalyptic shiznit, i suggest using shows/films such as:
Lost (abc)
Revolution (nbc)
Under the Dome (cbs)
Survivors (bbc)
Terra Nova (fox)
Jericho (cbs)
Falling Skies (tnt)
The Fades (bbc)
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
The Book of Eli
or basically any other where your potantial fc of choice gets dirty and grubby as hell. because, y’know, realism. so keep it real.
another rule i now go by: if there’s no reason for my muse not to be a poc, they’re a poc.
2. research —— be it where your muse comes from, their (previous) occupation, etc.
there are a number of blogs which are dedicated to this, but far too many rp blogs i’ve seen not researching at all. if it’s ‘for fun’, fine, but with ocs, i know a lot of people make them to expand on their own novels or stories, often featuring said ocs. if that’s the case, then accuracy is key.
military — no 20-something year old army colonels. or, even, 30-something. don’t do it. don’t go there.
here is a masterlist of resources
understand the rankings of the army. understand why someone might go into it, what people might lose, what they’d come back to.
one of my favourite fictional examples of someone who was in the military is Lieutenant Dan, in Forest Gump. not all people come out of wars with honour. he lost everything. think back to the New Year’s Eve scene, when the clock strikes 12, and I think that tells it all.
'tragically beautiful' — now, stop right there. don’t even broach onto that. most commonly used for things such as addictions, eating disorders, abusive relationships, etc. that is an absolute no-no.
giving your character an addiction? great idea. you have heaps of room for development right there, in whatever situation they’re in, but you have to get it right.
people going through something such as a heroin or a meth addiction will not be beautiful. research into what those drugs do to you. what they turn you into, and encourage you to do.
if you’re going to go down that path, i’d suggest reading material with characters going through similar experiences. the go-to area for heroin addicts? Irvine Welsh. read as many of his books as possible.
if you want to go down the alcoholism path, or something similar, read Nick Cave novels.
you want to know about eating disorders? read Marya Hornbacher’s Wasted.
do not romanticise any of this. if you do, Mark Renton will come to you in your sleep, and probably gank you. just don’t.
mythical lore/demonology/etc
actually read it, dear god.
for example — you have no idea how many times i’ve gone onto a demon oc blog, and it says ‘based on demonology’. what you need to understand is — there is more than one religion. is it Christian, is it Islamic, is it whatever? because, in many religions, demons are different. be specific.
if you're doing a greek god? use an fc who actually looks Greek. a Persian? then use a Persian actor. i saw people who watched 300 and the sequel (gr9 movies btw) complain about the lack of poc actors, for both Greek and Persian people. the lack of representation. don't be a hypocrite.
a large part of my family is Greek. the majority of Greeks do not look like Blake Lively or Charlie Hunnam. take that into account when you make your oc, unless they are stated in mythology to have fair hair.
illnesses
don’t just read the Fault in our Stars, and think you understand cancer. read autobiographies, look at what people say in support groups, whatever. if you know someone with experience and who is willing to discuss it, ask them questions.
in the case of mental illnesses, do the same.
again, do not romanticise illness, mental or physical.
people of different cultures, religions, and ethnic backgrounds to yourself
embrace customs, but disregard stereotypes.
my character was born in Korea, and so, i had to research names, how they would be written, etc. however, there are stereotypes that asian men are misogynists, that asians are all geniuses, and experts in martial arts. in the case of my muse, i have elected to ignore these things.
3. moral alignment —— do you want your character to be the good guy, the bad guy, or whatever inbetween
do not be afraid of tropes. tropes and cliches are not the same thing. some tropes are ridiculously interesting, and leave room for an infinite amount of development. go here.
give them something to lose and/or something they have lost. be it a loved one, a sentimental object, innocence, or their sanity, give them something that can or has been taken away. something they depend(ed) upon.
their upbringing will often be the cause of their alignment, or at least, many of their vices and/or virtues. and so, establish their family, their husband/wife, their job, where/how they grew up, etc. were they an outcast? were they bullied? were they popular? it all builds character.
back to fcs — now you’ve developed your character a fair bit, is the fc realistic? are they physically strong enough, for example, to be a firefighter or a soldier? do they have a quirk, such as odd coloured hair, that wouldn’t be allowed in their profession or situation?
in the apocalypse, it’s practically impossible to have perfectly dyed and styled cotton-candy pink hair for long.
are they an addict, whose skin would not be flawless?
police officers in Dallas, for example, have to cover tattoos up when on-duty. some schools are okay with tattoos and piercings, but they may have to be easy to cover also. government positions / luxury hotel personnel / management / sales usually are strict on tattoos and piercings.
is the fc appropriate?
if not, it’s advisable to change the fc to something a bit more realistic.
4. omnipotent/omniscient characters
unless they are literally God, don’t do it.
a good oc always has a weakness. whether they’re the leader of a settlement, a company president, or a mafia don, they are not invincible unless they are God, Satan, or the Wolverine (except now, it seems).
they can die, they can be manipulated, they can go bankrupt, they can be caught, and they can be out-smarted.
in your mind, put all the ocs you’ve seen and can remember on tumblr, and put them in a room. if i said “put your hand in the air if you’re a certified genius”, how many hands would go up?
probably about 70% or more.
remember that you want your oc to stick out.
don’t put the pussy on a pedestal.
unless your oc has some kind of mutant ability to be irresistible, or they are Catwoman, don’t expect everyone to fall at their feet and kiss their rings.
5. brother/sister/etc of——
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO
you can do better than that. you can make something more interesting than forcing a connection between your oc and a canon character before even threading with someone.
also?
that is basically godmodding.
if you really want to do that connection? ask an individual roleplayer who you think will be up for it, and ask if you can have it in a separate verse.
i’m going to stop around about now, because this is becoming an essay, and i’m sure you guys will get the idea.
