George Miller on sexuality in the Wasteland

Danny Peary: What about sex in your world? Obviously there is much homosexuality, particularly among the bikers. George Miller: We repeatedly asked ourselves what price sexuality would pay in this kind of medieval world. It certainly couldn’t function as it does in our contemporary society. People wouldn’t have time for recreational sex. There’s no time for a woman to have a baby, to nurse infants, etc.  It’s very unlikely that a pregnant woman or a woman with a child could survive. This could be one of the things that resulted in homosexual relationships in both stories [Mad Max and The Road Warrior]. One of the other things, however, was that we changed a lot of the sexes of characters without changing their roles. The Warrior Woman (Virginia Hey) for instance, was originally to be a man; the blond youth on the back of Wez’s cycle was originally a woman. So the women and men and their sexual roles are not as defined in this primitive world as they are in our society. Men and women are simply interchangeable.
