SherloNaNo is here to help you get it done! We are a network of Sherlockian friends taking part in NaNoWriMo who know that sometimes peer pressure really can help. Our Twitter and dedicated chat channel provide encouragement, structure, word wars, and a whole bunch of friendly cheerleading to help fellow Sherlockian WriMos get that novel done in a month.
All are welcome, Sherlockian or not, and we certainly don’t require that you be writing anything Holmesian to take part.
Find out more on our website, reblog this post, spread the word, and get involved, because the world needs your novel!
SherloNaNo is a network of Sherlockian friends and friends of Sherlockians gathering to help each other survive #NaNoWriMo.
How does it work?
The idea behind SherloNaNo is very simple: To help each other through a gruelling month of epistolary madness. We run and moderate scheduled ‘honeypots’ (virtual write-ins) in our chat channel. Outside these scheduled times, the chat remains open to all, so drop by for word wars, to talk plot and characters, or blow off some NaNo steam.
What is a NaNoWriMo?
National Novel Writing Month is a month-long challenge that runs from the 1st to 30th of November every year. The goal is simple: Write 50,000 words. Or, alternatively, some other amount of words that you set as your own goal. It’s hard, and it takes work, but it’s doable, and it’s fun.
But I don’t want to write about Sherlock for NaNoWriMo.
That’s totally fine! You can still join, no matter what your novel is about. We don’t believe in rules around here. You don’t even need to be writing just one novel. As long as you’ve committed to writing something during the month of November, you’re welcome.
When does the fun start?
Sooner than you might expect! Writing a novel in a month can take a surprising amount of prep work. But don’t worry – you’re not alone! Throughout October, SherloNaNo will organise prep sessions and share useful resources that can help you get your novel ready to be written. NaNoWriMo itself kicks off at 00:00 on November 1, wherever you are in the world. Watch this space for an official calendar of #SherloNaNo2017 events, coming soon.
How do I find out more?
Easy! Follow SherloNaNo on tumblr or @SherloNaNo on Twitter.
This sounds awesome! I want to help!
Brilliant!! We always need people to Mod chat channels, run honeypots, etc. If you have a great idea for a prep event, a write-in challenge, or anything else, drop us a line or email [email protected] and we’ll be happy to talk about your ideas. And any reblogs of this post would be extra helpful as well!
“On Par” wordcount goal today is 5001, but don’t worry if you’re not there yet - those are more like guidelines anyway.
Don’t forget that the SherloNaNo IRC Chat is always open for you to catch up with other SherloNaNoers, share inspiration, discuss challenges, and engage in some serious word wars.
We’ve also got a handy-dandy resource list to help you get started, get productive, and get words on paper. Got useful resources to share? Let us know!
And finally, be sure to join us on Saturday and Sunday this week for the first scheduled Honeypots of the month – we’ll be in the IRC chat hosting word wars most of the day!
Are you a Sherlockian? Attempting NaNoWriMo? Scared witless? #SherloNaNo is here to help see you through November and hopefully to that coveted 50,000 word mark!
SherloNaNo is intended as a safe space of open, creative exchange – a network of Sherlockians and friends gathering to help each other survive NaNoWriMo. Consider this your official invite to join in the fun.
Interested? Confused? Keep reading below for more information. We hope to be welcoming you to the SherloNaNo party soon!
This sounds great! How do I play?
Most of the SherloNaNo fun will take place over on IRC. (Don’t know what an IRC is? Don’t worry, we got you.) The dedicated #SherloNaNo IRC channel will be open throughout November, a space where we can gather at will to chat, moan, plot, and plan.
We’ll also be holding scheduled “Honeypots”. Honeypots are virtual write-ins - there will be word wars, a healthy dose of commiseration, and more. Watch this space for the schedule, coming soon!
For more information, a schedule, detailed instructions on how to join the IRC channel, and resources to help you get your novelling journey started, check out the links on our Tumblr page.
I’m planning on doing NaNoWriMo, but I’m not going to be writing anything about Sherlock Holmes. Can I still join SherloNaNo?
Of course! SherloNaNo is themed in order to draw like-minded friends together, but we’re not going to perch in your word processor and police what you’re writing.
What’s the catch?
Well, unfortunately, we can’t actually write the novel for you (internet friends are great, but there are limits). Beyond that, we have two main limitations:
Currently, the SherloNaNo organisation team is entirely located in Europe, with full-time jobs. This means that unless we get volunteers in other time zones willing to get involved, organised honeypots and moderator ‘supervision’ of the channel are likely to take place at awkward times for our global friends. However, the channel remains open even if there are no moderators present (consider a trust-system in operation), so try not to let the time zones harsh your buzz.
The SherloNaNo IRC channel is, for several reasons, an adult-only space. You must be 18 or over to join. This is to protect us and, more importantly, to protect our younger friends. That doesn’t mean if you’re under 18 that you can’t join in the spirit of SherloNaNo – we just can’t welcome you in the chat room.
So which of my mutuals are doing NaNoWriMo this year? Wanted to remind everybody who cares, my nano username is sadrosendahl, or you can go to my blog and click on the 2014 nano winner button, and it’ll take you right to my profile page.
Idk how much i’ll get done this year, but my goals are more along the lines of be concise and get the story moving, not so much filler. because i do tend to get soo caught up in filler when i get uncertain about how to get to the next part that i don’t have the story anywhere near finished in 50k. my first year i finally had the story finished at 70k by june. last year i had 50k and had barely gotten out of the exposition. but last year i was working on my epic. also last year i was switching between several perspectives, and my inner editor insisted that i rotate perspectives in order and give each perspective equal time, even though some characters weren’t doing much of anything at that point. i need to avoid doing that, because it results in more filler and less actual thing happening in the novel. i want to actually have a finished draft where all the really important stuff happens, y’know? anyway i may find myself in @theticklishpear‘s chatroom or the @sherlonano2015 chatroom at some point. or you can message me and we can sprint together.
A bit of a late response, but we would love to welcome you in the chatroom any time! Word sprints have really been helping a lot of us get the words on paper.
I'm stuck. I have written 445 words. That is it. This is a continuation of a Sherlock story I've been plugging away at for a while. The next say 2 chapters are very emotionally dense.I have my 9 main characters along with another 5 minor characters jockeying for position. I can see the scenes in my head. (I write to music.) I have the three songs. It is all there. I can't get it on the page. (Hits head on desk. Repeatedly.) Thanks for letting me vent.
Try not to beat yourself up, dear dragonsbain! I always find that is the first step towards perpetuating the cycle of never getting words on the page. Have you tried maybe skipping over the scene that is causing you problems and moving on to something else, just to get the words flowing? I have found that an immensely useful tactic throughout this NaNo. We believe in you, you can definitely do the thing!
Checking in on the tumblr bees on Day 7 of NaNoWriMo. How’s it going?! Busy busy? Have you been by the channel? Buzz on by and join the other busy SherloNaNo bees for word wars, plot chats, and more! Be sure and follow us on Twitter as well for notifications of Honeypots, word wars, and motivational tidbits.
Keep hacking away at those novels of yours, SherloWriMos. WE BELIEVE IN YOU!
Well, I think I’m going to do NaNo to help me along with the original novel I’m writing, but it’s already 50K in length. Can you set a different goal? I know NaNo encourages you to use it to continue something in progress.
