         “It’s nothing to be embarrassed about,” she replies, with a soft smile.  Then, she covers her mouth to stop a small giggle from escaping.  She wants to be supportive of Toph, after all.  And, besides, she gets it.  She really does.  More than anyone, she can see that Sokka isn’t just some buffoon with a boomerang who loves food.  Suki knows he’s one of the kindest guys around, and one who isn’t afraid to apologize when he’s wrong — a true rarity.  Okay, and, maybe it helps that he’s pretty cute.  

         “I promise I won’t him,” she continues.  “He’s lucky he’s had someone like you looking after him all this time.”

“ Ah — no, of course not! ”

She’s pulling his leg, of course - the arch of her brow, exaggerated by the striking makeup made it clear - but with his mind preoccupied with the unfamiliar get-up, he still flusters at the question. 

The femininity doesn’t irk him. The kimono and hakama weren’t too different from what he would wear at home, and the the sight of his own face, unrecognisable under the striking and powerful colours, stirred a giddy fluttering in his stomach; a quiet glee at achieving a childhood dream. Rather, it was the strange WEIGHT of the fans, the shakiness that came with rejecting the urge to bend that left him hesitant, awkward in his movements.

“ I just feel like I look — silly. ” He truly was grateful Kyoshi had picked such a strong makeup base - now Suki couldn’t see how red he flushed at the admission!

         She has to bite her tongue.  She could say so many more things to tease him and she almost does.  A ‘Do we look silly, too?’ lingers on her tongue and she swallows it down.  She knows it wouldn’t help him learn and he really does seem like he’s trying, so she takes a small toward him and softens her features.

         “Think of it this way,” she offers, “you should be proud.  The silk thread symbolizes the brave blood that flows through our veins.  The gold insignia represents the honor of the warrior’s heart.”  A short breath as she gets to the heart of his problem.  “I know it’s not like bending, but I think bravery, honor and all of these techniques can be helpful whether you’re wearing the uniform or not.”   

         She smiles and widens her stance, ready for anything he might try.  “And, remember, it’s not about strength.”

he makes himself comfortable in the space across from the kyoshi warrior,   the one he seemed to have known in an entirely different life.    how could this all be in the same year?     ❛❛   now how’d we get here exactly?    you would have thought we were better than this.   ❜❜    he choses to ease up on a sharp grin and make up for it in his sharp glare over his shoulder,   clenching his jaw.    you truly would have thought. 

a huff of a sigh and he looks back to the girl.    ❛❛   I got taken back in Ba Sing Se.   So much for it being a safe place.  ❜❜    ire clenches its fist over his heart,   vivid memory recall doing nothing pleasant for him.   he pauses,   breaths it out.   ❛❛   and you?    ❜❜ 

         The memory is a bit hazier now than she’d like.  The dull ache of hunger in her stomach now manifesting in her lack of focus, eyes shifting back and forth, and the single fist she makes and hides under the table.  Of course she remembered him, travelling with a couple other kids to Ba Sing Se.  They seemed beyond close — like family.  She’d admired him, taking care of them all, feeding himself last.  It reminded her of herself with her warriors.  She’d do anything for them.

         Now, that all seemed so far away.  Kyoshi Island.  Mingxia.  Even Sokka and the others.  She didn’t regret, though.  She was right.  Protecting Appa had been her most important mission, even if it was her last.

         She swallowed hard and looked back at the boy before with a strained smile.  “That’s the problem, isn’t it?  We’re too good.  The most hated by the Fire Nation,” she replies, between grit teeth.  “I’m sorry.  What happened to the others that were with you?  I’m sure they wouldn’t let you all be in the same place.  They sent me here by myself because I’m the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors.  We got caught helping to free the Avatar’s bison by Princess Azula.  She won, unfortunately.”
