Hank Green has been using AI in his videos and that’s a whole other can of worms I’m not going to open at this time but what I find interesting is that the phrase that people apparently ‘caught’ him with, “I appreciate the pushback” was an ad lib and not a phrase generated by an AI for that script at all. However, what this suggests to me is that Hank Green uses so much AI in his day-to-day that his own speech patterns are starting to subconsciously mimic that of the AI. And in many ways this is the most chilling part of the whole saga….that the more one hands their thinking over to AI, the more of one’s own unique pattern of thinking erodes…….

There is definitely a linguistic homogenisation process happening.

It didn't start with AI. Arguably part of it is just a natural consequence of globalised communication and having to be understood by people outside your region, but technology is accelerating it. Spellcheck, autocorrect, predictive text etc all contributed (shoutout to the time I tried three times to type 'neighbours' on my phone and had it 'corrected').

But AI is on another level because people aren't even phrasing things in their own words at all now. Students think that ChatGPT's version of academic writerspeak is the standard for how essays 'should' sound, when in fact, AI is trained to produce not the best example of something, but the most probable, i.e. the most average version of something (which it doesn't always succeed at). It's the mediocrity machine. And if someone interacts with ChatGPT more than they do with actual people, it is going to have an impact on their own use of language.

It's maybe not as big of a problem objectively as generating misinformation or stealing intellectual property, but the erasure of the personal voice, of individual expression, is something that really bothers me.

I just find it weird the way many people in the west and in predominantly white, Christian societies seem incapable of acknowledging or reckoning with the idea that other cultures have their own bigotries that may look different than theirs in some ways or be organized differently than they are here, but are nonetheless still ethnic/religious/racial biases and prejudices because every fucking culture and society that exists has them.
