Recapping My Journey
Recapping My Journey
My journey to obtain my masters degree has been a challenging yet intriguing journey. I have pushed myself past my limits time and time again to ensure I met deadlines and kept the GPA I desired. When I first decided to enter the program, I knew I was going to learn something, but I had no idea I would learn as much as I have in such a short amount of time. In this year, I had learned how to develop a business plan, marketing plan, and executive leadership just to name a few. During this post and recap, all my courses and what I’ve learned.
During my first month, I took Mastery: Personal development and Leadership and I learned a lot about myself as a leader. In the text Mastery by Robert Greene, he discusses discovering your Life’s task and what the keys are to mastery in this area. This class showed me how to understand what is expected of me as a leader and how to further develop my leadership skills.
This course also taught me how to deepen the mentoring dynamic with others under my leadership. I got to explore different tactics to help develop my team members and assist them in honing in on their individual leadership skills. This course started out the program on a high note and helped me understand what it takes to master a task once you start your journey.
In month, two I took Executive Leadership, which introduced me to an entire new view on how executives lead. Both textbooks compare and contrast the difference between soft approaches and stern approaches in business. In the 48 Laws of Power, rule number 28 states to enter action with boldness. Being that I am a female to in a male dominated industry, I learned that I have to enter this industry with boldness and have a different determination for myself as well as my team in order to make a real move in this industry.
From the text Developing the Leader Within I learned that there would be situations where I will have to take a calmer approach to certain situations that call for a certain type of finesse. Maxwell is all about knowing when to take the high road and trying to understand effective problem solving. This course was a real eye opener and I am applying what I have learned every chance I get.
In month, three I took Project and Team Management. This course was all about building effective team and management. I learned about conflict resolution, which has helped me a lot in managing my team to keep the drama to a minimum. The main project for this course showed me how to take different personalities and blend those personalities to achieve a common goal.
During this course, the instructor had the class do a DISC assessment in order to give us a more in depth look at our own personality. From this assessment, I learned that I have a very dominating personality. I also learned that I have a very strong inner motivation to create, bring new ideas to the table, and handle pressure well all while striving for excellence. This course gave me a lot of new ideas to implement in my business and my team and I can honestly say this course was amazing.
Month four got into the real meat and potatoes of this program. Business Storytelling and Branding Development taught me all about telling your company’s’ story and branding your company. During my initial overview of this course, I thought I would just learn a few key things about branding, but I learned about creating your brand’s identity and what stories keep consumers coming back.
This course taught me how to conduct market research and build an effective and interesting brand story. In just one month, I felt that I learned years of valuable information. Mr. DeGillio’s personal knowledge of branding gave use an in depth looks into the world of branding and what tactics real business owners are using to brand their companies. The 22 Immutable laws of Branding textbook was a great read and the information I obtained from this book has helped me understand the importance of branding.
Month five I took Business finance and I will admit I was a bit intimidated going into this class because I knew everything would be brand new to me. After my first week I dove into my textbook and all the dots connected. I learned about investments, cash equivalents and different formulas to calculate common shares, ROI’s and Net profit margin as well as a few other key things needed for business finance.
Though I enjoyed the program in its entirety, I would have to say this was one of my favorites. The amount of material I learned blew my mind and I started to apply what I learned immediately. The textbook Rich Dad Poor Dad showed me the difference between assets and liabilities and outlined the mentality of those who are rich versus the mentality of those who are poor. This book gave me a lot of inspiration and helped me truly understand how to obtain financial literacy.
Month six marked the midway point of the program and I took Negotiation and Deal –Making. Even though I learned different tactics for negotiations and deal making this was one of my least favorite classes of the program. We had an assignment where we paired up with a classmate to conduct a mock up negotiation between artist and manager. In this project, I learned how to draft a contract and what details should be enlisted in a contract. I also learned different personalities of the negotiator.
This course taught me about objective criteria, mutual benefit, and underlying interests of each party. These lessons allowed me to know what tactics I would need to use when entering any type of negotiation. The most interesting topic I learned was game of theory. In Game of theory, you utilize the use of probability and research to foresee the outcome of a negotiation. This was a very interesting class and I did learn a lot.
In month, seven was Product and Artist Management. In my initial overview of this course, I just thought the course would briefly explain management to give me a look at what managers do. During this course I learned about the day-to-day activities that a manager is involved in such as planning of an artists career and different tasks they take on to ensure an artists success.
Product management is totally different from artist management. A product manager focus lies solely on the physical product. Product managers ensure and that a product is maintained on the market or that the product is market ready before entry. I learned how to drive business results; deliver results through people manage multiple priorities. Overall, this class allowed me to explore different aspects of the industry and showed me how to utilize everything to my advantage.
In month, eight I took Advance Entertainment Law. This course showed the different legal aspects of the industry from copyright infringement to the different product categories trademarks and how to fill out registration forms. In this class, I learned the difference in product marks and service marks as well as got to research real cases.
Learning the do’s and don’ts of what to do legally has helped me avoid common mistakes that new entrepreneur make when entering the industry. This course was structured to put you in real world experiences that will teach you how to handle situations if you are ever sued or brought up on legal charges. Though we were advised to get legal counsel this course helped you understand the terminology that will be used as well as showed you how to handle small things yourself.
In month, nine it was time for Entertainment Media Publishing And Distribution. This course was all about getting your music out using different platforms and P.O.D sites such as Cd Baby. I learned how to create a professional press kit, and pitch query letters to publishers.
Learning what a query pitch letter consisted of and how to word the letter was a great trait to learn. Your pitch includes a sizzle line in which is used to grab the readers attention and draw interest. This class made me research different P.O.D sites in which I then and compared and contrasted the pricing and benefits of each site. After this course, I was ready to get my artists music into online stores and am currently working on a release for April in which I will utilize the tools I learned for this course.
In month, ten I took Digital Marketing. This class blew my mind. I had no idea that marketing called for vast amounts of market research and SEO know how that I came to find out. I got the opportunity to learn all about Google Analytics and install it on my blog to track results.
In this course, I learned how to develop a marketing plan for a specific product release, which helped me create a marketing plan for my artist Hypeman upcoming album release. Using what I learned for this course, I now have a marketing plan that consists of market research and different tools such as email marketing, and social media tools we use to market the product. This class was great and gave me the tools needed to further my business efforts.
I month, eleven I took business plan development. This course took everything I had learned in previous classes and helped me implement them into my business plan. This class pushed me to have late nights that called for research, research, and more research to ensure I had census data and statistical numbers of the industry.
This course was another favorite of mine due to the fact that it made me act as a professional and create solid content. After some long hours and critique from Mr. Burhoe I know how a business plan that can be used to obtain funding. Knowing the use of the one-minute pitch has allowed me to gain interest from potential investors and solidify my company direction.
As the program came to a close in Final Project: Business plan I feel that I am prepared to enter the entertainment business world with the knowledge needed to succeed. This course was all about the final business plan. This class took this year of course work and brought everything full circle.
All the resources made available by Mr. Thompson helped me get everything needed in my business plan to make it professional and grab the interest of investors. After everything I have learned this year I am sure that upon entering the industry that I will be able to become a serious competitor. I am currently waiting to meet with a family member who is interested in investing in my company after I presented him with my business plan. I am so grateful for all the things I have learned, and plan to take full advantage of this knowledge as I move forward in my career. I would like to thank each instructor as they all gave me valuable information that I am confident will help me achieve my dream of becoming a viable business owner.
Best,
Crystal Mathis
Business Plan Development
Business Plan Development
This month I took Business Plan Development. My initial goal for this course was to learn the basics needed to write a business plan, but I learned so much more. Every business needs to have a solid business plan to achieve goals and give insight in financial expectations needed to become operational and stay operational. Before this course, I didn’t understand the true valuable of a business plan or how the different sections represented you as a professional, but after this course I can say I know so much more.
This course has far exceeded my initial expectations. I can’t even explain the amount of understanding I now have of business plans. I knew you had to do some research for business plans, but I had no idea that the information was crafted in such a direct manner pertaining to your specific industry. For instance in the marketing section the information needs to be specific in market trends and how you plan to fit your company in that market without being lost in the trail of numbers and marketing schemes. I also learned to importance in benchmarking your competitors as well as future competitors. Knowing how your competitors operate and finding their weaknesses can give you a pocket in the market to dominate if it is unfulfilled. My insight on statistical information and how important it is to stay current with how industries are changing is better than every. This course motivated me to find different websites that give industry statistics monthly and quarterly, which allow me to follow what markets are being utilized and which ones are possibly unfulfilled. This data can help my team and I to possibly predicted new trends within those unfulfilled markets or target those specific markets with our products and services.
This entire program has given me a different outlook on business. I know so many small business owners that can benefit from knowing the information that I have learned in this program. Every piece of information I have learned this month is already being applied. I am going back over my business plan with a fine tooth comb and structuring each section so that it has a solid foundation and a cohesive direction. Overall, this course and program has been amazing and has given me a better understanding of business as a whole.
Importance of a business plan
Importance of a business plan
The two business plan experts that I chose to write on are Angelo Meneguzzi and Steven Gedeon. Both display ample knowledge on writing business plans and are different, yet similar in the same instance.
Steve Gedeon has led and founded over a dozen different organizations ranging for non- profits to private and public. He holds over 20 teaching awards one being the President’s Award of Teaching and Excellence. With all of his teachings and education, Steve is a highly- regarded entrepreneurship educator. While looking into Steve’s view on business plans, I found that he focuses on two questions: what is the business and whom are you selling to. For many business owners trying to obtain funding is the critical part of their success, and while funding will help the start of the business, the business plan is vital to preparation. In his slideshare “how to write a business plan”, Mr. Gedeon outline key principles of designing and creating a effective business model. In his customer segment, he stresses the importance of focus and using the market to guide you. In one slide, he suggests to “Get into the mind of your customer”. I believe this statement calls back to one of Steve’s focuses, which is who are you selling to. Steve also highlights the importance of the executive summary, saying that this section is what makes you a credible entrepreneur. For my own business plan I will utilize Steve’s know “whom are you selling to” suggestion. In order to get consumers to buy your product you have to look at what they what they are buying and how they are buying it.
Fellow business plan expert, Angelo Meneguzzi has ten years under his belt when it comes to developing business plans.(spoke.com) Angelo has been able to work to work with various start-ups in the technology industry, which resulted in substantial amounts of revenue gain. Mr. Meneguzzi’s approach to research is idealistic and seems to have great value in regards to business plans. Angelo Meneguzzi believes that the business continue to write the plan. After seeing how Angelo raises the importance of researching and letting the business continue to generate information for the plan, I now realize how important is to continue to research your market. This is something I will incorporate is my own business plan, being that the music industry changes rapidly.
Digital Marketing
Digital Marketing
This month I am taking Digital Marketing and so far I have learned lots of valuable information that I can start to apply to my business immediately. My initial goal for this course was to learn how to create a successful marketing plan for a product or an artist. I also wanted to learn what is effective in today’s market and with some research and direction I have found a tremendous amount of information. I have learned that following industry trends and social media can help to see what works and what has yet to yield profits. Doing some independent research I found the best times to post content and what type of content fans engage more often while on social media platforms.
The first half of this class was a real eye-opener. I’ve heard so much about Google Analytics and thought that it was something only larger companies used. I had no idea I could use Google Analytics to track engagement on sites that I utilize. The first assignment for Digital Marketing gave us step-by-step instructions on installing Google Analytics and Sitemap. Since that assignment I have used both Sitemap and Google Analytics to track user engagement on my companies blogger and have found great information on who is reading. According to Cooper, Mondays are the best days to blog and readers usually read blogs in the morning around 11am.
So far this month has been a learning experience, and I plan to start utilizing these strategies in my record label as soon as possible. I have a project that I will be releasing in March of next year and with all of the knowledge I have acquired this month I believe my marketing efforts will prove beneficial. I will create a marketing plan consisting of different social media outlets in hopes to promote awareness about the project as well as make sells.
Digital marketing has helped me learn to take advantage of free tools, such as social media and other software that will help me advance in my career and help my artists advance in theirs. Overall this class is great and very well thought out. I can’t wait to get into the remainder of this course.

Entertainment Media Publishing & Distribution
This month has been a great month. I learned so many new things I can start to apply immediately. My initial goals for this class was to learn the basic of distribution and publishing, but after getting into the class I learned so much more and blew my goals out of the water.
Before this class I had only a bland idea of how I would contact agents but after the pitch query letter assignment and go to training session I know the proper way to word my pitch letter and how to write a great sizzle line. I also learned great ways to self publish creative content without going the traditional route using P.O.D sites such as TuneCore, Cd Baby, and others. These tools will be vital part of my business being that the industry is releasing more and more content digitally.
I also learned what it is in a successful press kit. For a while I had been researching press kits and only found watered down information about the basics of a press kit, but for project two I had the chance to make a press kit of my own. With the resources made available in this month’s text I found the information I needed quickly and was able to make a very professional press kit. I am currently working on press kits for my artists and am applying all the things I learned this month.
Overall this class was great, and Mr. Rapp made sure to participate in discussions and gave constructive feedback on all assignments. I really can’t put into words how much I will take away form this course.
Advanced Entertainment Law
This month I took Advanced Entertainment Law. My first thought was this class was going to be nothing but reading and papers, but it turned out the class was well structured and mixed things up a bit. My initial goal was to learn very basic information, but this class exceeded my goal by far. I will take away an ample amount of information from this class and start to apply it to my day-to-day business.
The course material for this class was awesome. It placed you in real world settings and gave you assignments that directly relates to the business. I will say the registration forms assignment was one of my favorites. I am familiar with copyright forms, but I had an outside source fill out my trademark information. After that particular assignment I am confident that I will be able to do the work myself next time! I have learned valuable concepts that will help me take my entertainment company to the next step smoothly, and keep me out of legal trouble along the way. Another plus for me was researching real cases. Getting to see how the legal system works up close and personal was great. I got to look at cases, read the judges opinion, and then assess the case from my perspective. This type of research helps me get to know the “do’s” and “don’ts” of the industry from a legal standpoint.
With all the knowledge that I have obtained this month, I am sure I will be able to avoid as many legal issues as I can when launching my company. Making sure to follow legal guidelines when filling out important paperwork and getting things done correctly will help assist me in this journey. Overall this class has taught me so much and I cannot wait to jump at the chance to use my newly acquired knowledge.
Product and Artist Management
This month has been, yet another great month. I have always been intrigued by managers and wondered what it took to actually mange an artist. Early in my career as an artist I decided I needed a manger due to the fact I wanted to focus on music instead all the politics, but as I progress I want to become more involved with the day to day. My initial goal for this class was to learn the basics of management so I could get a better idea of what is expected of management and how things are run, but I learned far more than I expected. I took away things from this class that just don’t apply to the music industry, but entertainment as a whole.
You can manage just about anyone’s career if you have the proper knowledge. Basically a manger is responsible for day-to-day activities pertaining to the person’s career. They find opportunities that best fit the wants and needs of their client. To manage takes someone who has great skill in multi-tasking, planning and excellent interpersonal skills. Being strategic is also a key skill to look for in an effective manager. A manager’s sole purpose is to assist their client in their efforts to lead to success. Product management differs being that its focus is on a physical product. A product manager’s focus is to ensure and maintain a product that is on the market or getting ready to go on the market. Being able to manage different priorities such as drive business results, deliver results through people, ensure market- driven direction, guide product “fit” and function, and manage multiple priorities (Product Manager's Field Guide 6). Strategic visioning and planning is also key skills that a product manger should have to ensure a products success in the market.
Overall this class has been a blast. I have learned so many things that I can take and apply to my career sooner than later. I can’t wait to start applying these concepts and putting my own swing to them to fit what I am doing. I know the entertainment industry is one tough cookie to crack, but I Believe if I keep learning and applying what I have learned I should have no problem succeeding.
